  • Peaceful family hideaway with pitches in a sheltered paddock
  • Close to Flamingo Land, Pickering and the North York Moors
  • Well-maintained amenities, firepit hire and charging facilities
Popular but peaceful, and small but perfectly formed... these are the excellent elements of North Yorkshire's Hobground Campsite. This friendly and quiet site welcomes all ages to its serene location, with pitches in a sheltered paddock on a site set back a quarter of a mile from the main road. It's well placed for easy exploring: Pickering and Malton are both 15 minutes' drive away, York is 50 minutes, and the North York Moors National Park is 10 minutes to the north. Additionally – cue overexcited honks from the kids – the site is a mere three miles from the theme park and zoo of Flamingo Land. Hobground has a well-maintained shower and toilet block, chemical disposal, charging facilities, ice pack freezing and a washing-up area. Firepits can be hired for an extra charge.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The site is very quiet and tents are not packed in together so you have lots of space. The facilities are good. The site is within walking distance to a pub but you do have to walk along the road. The location is great for exploring the area - we went to whitby, castle howard, thirsk, Pickering - all within easy reach. The owner is lovely and so accommodating - he checked everything was ok during our stay which we appreciated. The lack of artificial light makes it a great place for stargazing and the stars are spectacular. But you do need a torch for those nighttime toilet trips!!! I would definitely stay here again.

Disliked The washing up sinks were near the bins which were swarming with wasps so we were bombarded with them as we were washing up. This could be easily sorted by relocating the bins.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked A friendly site with Small, flat fields but lots of space. They are close enough to the beautiful village of Pickering, but also far enough away to be in peaceful and beautiful countryside. The facilities were clean and in good order.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked Peaceful, out in the country. Spacious areas. Site divided into 3 fields so no crowding.

Disliked On arrival, board said to ring. We did and have to say it wasn't the friendliest of welcomes!
It said there was a pub that you could walk to. Never found a pub open and no footpaths or verges to safely walk along to get anywhere from the site.
Facilities were dire.... well on 1st day they were. Smelt of stale wee, unclean and washing up area was vile. No hot water either at sink in toilet (where shower was) or outside at washing up station. So had to boil kettle in tent to wash up!
2nd day, another set of facilities were opened as a few more campers arrived. This was better as had hot water but the hand sanitiser unit had black sludge inside and although wasn't using it, looked disgusting.

From the manager: Answering your comments in order to
Checking in requires you to call on arrival
Pub hasn’t moved still 15 walk away
Country lanes don’t have pavements/ paths
Toilets and showers are cleaned meticulously by myself several times a day , unfortunately they are only as clean as the last person who has used them.this applies to the outdoor sinks also.No hot water outside due to children standing in them (unsafe).Hot water is available in both toilet areas,(5 in total) and washing up bowls are provided to obtain this.
Hand sanitizer dispensers are topped up with sometimes a different coloured gel affecting the appearance.
A waste of a review totally unhelpful and unnecessary.
Check reviews of happy campers who stayed on site at the same time.
