  • Secluded adults-only pitches on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds
  • A 20-minute drive to York's park and ride; 45 minutes to the coast
  • Part of a working farm with easy access to bridleways for walks
Secluded, sheltered and informal… that sums up Primrose Hill Farm, a working farm hidden away down a country lane on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, a mile from the little village of Bugthorpe. This quiet adults-only site has something of a wild camping feel about it, with just simple facilities including unisex portable toilets, a washing-up area, a freezer for ice packs and a fresh water supply (please note there are no showers or hot water). You’ll need a torch to find your way around after dark here as there’s no lighting – and that may well mean some spectacular starry skies overhead. Tents and small campervans are welcome on the pitches, which have splendid views out over the surrounding countryside. Want to see more of those rural views? Set off on walks straight from the campsite on the farm’s bridleways and see if you can spot deer, buzzards, hares or red kites (or even just the Highland cows that live on site). Dogs are welcome to join you for a break here, and will no doubt enjoy the local walks just as much. If you’re looking to stray a little further, a fine option is to plan an outing to York – it’s a 20-minute drive from the farm to a park and ride that makes a handy launchpad for a day strolling through the ancient streets. To feed yourselves ready for those outings, there are food pubs in the nearby villages of Leavening, Burythorpe and Bishop Wilton, and Bugthorpe has a well-stocked village shop for picnic supplies or bits for a barbecue back at the farm. The farm often has fresh eggs to buy for a great alfresco breakfast too.

Local attractions

York should certainly be on the schedule for a stay here – easy access to the main road means that it’s only a 20-minute drive to York's Grimston Bar Park and Ride for a straightforward way to visit the city centre. Once you’re there, wander along the old walls, visit the minster, take a boat ride or see the trains at the National Railway Museum. Heading in the other direction, a 45-minute drive through the Wolds gets you to Yorkshire’s east coast for days on the beach in Bridlington, Filey or Scarborough, or a bit of birdwatching at RSPB Bempton Cliffs. Other outings nearby might take you along the David Hockney Trail from Warter (20 minutes’ drive), to the abandoned medieval village of Wharram Percy (25 minutes) or to visit grand buildings like Sledmere House (20 minutes), Castle Howard (25 minutes) or Burton Agnes Hall (35 minutes). A tour of Ryedale Vineyards (15 minutes) is likely to be a tasty option too…

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The location, lovely views, wild life, great walking area and having the site to ourselves. It was like how camping used to be with minimal facilities which was great for us. The fact that this is an adult only site and doesn’t allow large groups is an added bonus and we’d definitely return again.

Disliked: There wasn’t anything that we disliked.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We are so pleased you enjoyed your visit to Primrose Hill and that you were able to explore this hidden corner of Yorkshire. We look forward to seeing you again.
