  • One-acre glamping site in grounds of a former Edwardian waterworks
  • Under a mile from the centre of Clare; Long Melford 15 minutes' drive
  • Furnished glamping accommodation at the end of an old drovers' track
Tucked away at the end of an ancient drovers' road in the East Anglian countryside, Old Waterworks Boutique Glamping is a one-acre glamping getaway under a mile from Clare, Suffolk's oldest town. With gorgeous views over the area and very little background noise, this glamping spot is on the site of a natural spring, hence its past life as an Edwardian waterworks. The site isn't shy about showcasing its industrial heritage and makes a point of upcycling as much as it can, but this is also a place for nature, peace and quiet. There are several communal seating areas where you can soak up the atmosphere, one of which is in an old filtration pit, which handily provides shelter from the elements. The site is run by Ben and Netty, who have created a mix of industrial and cosy accommodation. All units come with access to a kitchen, showers and toilets, with toiletries provided. Although the units differ in terms of how they are decorated, each has proper beds, bedding, blankets and hot water bottles. Barbecue packs can be bought too, and for other drinks and snacks an honesty shop system is in place. Clare can be reached within about 15 minutes' walk and has restaurants, pubs and independent shops to explore. There are a number of trails along the river Stour to try out, with many footpaths starting directly at the site gates.

Saturn bell tent (five person)

Liked: Great communication prior to our stay. The site was so lovely, lovely welcome from Ben & Netty & (mum) shown around everything. The facilities are great. Great use of space and resources love the horse box showers. Everything is provided- I definitely overpacked when I needed not to. breakfast items are provided, towels, bedding fully functional kitchen with all utensils you’d possibly need. you don’t need anything at all- simply just show up. Our bell tent was amazing myself and my boys loved it! Very clean and beautiful, fresh bedding (smelt lovely & fresh) - so nice hearing the birds in the morning. The campfire gets lit nightly with the opportunity for roasting marshmallows. (Huge hit) a Beverage was also offered upon our arrival. Absolutely Love what they are offering here. You will not find a most affordable lovely friendly inclusive site. I travelled alone with my sons the site felt safe and secure with a fantastic environment. Ben & Netty we thoroughly enjoyed our stay with you guys 😀

Disliked: Nothing!!!!

Venus bell tent

Liked: Peaceful spot, surrounded by beautiful countryside. Perfect place to relax and recharge. Nice walk into town through fields and past some allotments. Ben & Netty are perfect hosts who couldn’t do enough for you. Highlight of the stay was getting to see the amazing barn owl who visits at dusk every night to hunt in the field next to the campsite.

Saturn bell tent (five person)

Liked: We had a wonderful 2 night stay in the Saturn bell tent. Ben and Netty are fantastic hosts, friendly and helpful and we’re always there to answer our questions, give suggestions about walks and days out and help us get out campfire started!! We were a party of 5, 2 adults and 3 children. The tent was very cosy, warm and comfy with proper beds for us all and plenty of space for luggage. The cooking facilities were good, several fridges and all the utensils you would need. The breakfast included was a nice touch and there was lots of things to choose from. Toilet block and shower were also good. The site is spacious and in a lovely location with beautiful sunsets at the end of the field. The children enjoyed exploring, trying out the hammock and playing ball games on the grass. The site is about 15 minutes walk through cornfields into Clare. Thanks again Ben and Netty - we hope to visit again!

Liked: Super friendly, lovely design, everything provided

Disliked: Not a dislike but I would have had to keep a close eye if I had a toddler as there are steep steps. Great fun for the five year olds tho!

Tipi

Liked: Amazing location, small, beautiful site in Suffolk, amid peaceful fields. Site has 6 pods / tepees and as we were 5 families together had the site almost to ourselves. Owners provide lots of compfrtable seats and outside dining areas and there is an amazing campfire in the centre. Good toilet and shower facilities and shared kitchen and washing up area. Breakfast kindly provided and wine on arrival! Our kids' age ranged between 1- 14 and they absolutely loved it. So much space for games (cricket etc), playing and watching the sunset behind the tepees and in the neighbouring fields was unforgettable. We're already working out dates we can return next year, as so perfect for our group

Disliked: The shared kitchen could be set out a bit more clearly to know what items are provided by the owners for guests, what is their own stuff and areas for the different tents (it was workable for us as a big group sharing)

Jupiter bell tent (five person)

Liked: We had a lovely stay in this special little site. The hosts could not do enough for us, even finding hot water bottles as the temperature dipped in the evenings. We had a couple of lovely evenings star gazing around the communal fire and some nice little local walks. The beds were super comfy and the tents felt so homely with nice personal touches. The children were fascinated by all the fairy lights and the fire area at night, and they loved all the hammocks and swings dotted around the place. All the best bits of the camping experience without the hassle.

Disliked: Just be aware that if you travel with younger kids, you'll need to be vigilant. The gaps in the hedge which helped us feel part of the wider landscape could be a swift exit point for an adventurous toddler! And there was a set of steep steps which required supervision with little ones.

Venus bell tent

Liked: Well were do I start, it was a fantastic experience as i/we have never done camping before, but because it was already there it was great, each tent/ teepee have there own individual personality and quirkiness, the sunsets are amazing, the hosts were there for all your needs, tea, coffee, and cereal was always available, hut with all your kitchen needs, there was a large campfire area right in the middle which got all the campers together at the end of the day for chats and drinks (bring your own).. We had 2 kids with us 5 and 11 and they didn't want to leave, large area for them to play, (we took garden games) just needs a sign at the end of the lane, but other than that it was a perfect 4 days. And would definitely stay again, looking forward to that..

Local attractions

Clare has timber-framed houses to see, as well as a wealth of antiques shops, tea rooms to try and the ruins of a Norman fortress in Clare Castle Country Park Trust to visit. Clare Priory should also be on the agenda, as should nearby historic villages like Long Melford (15 minutes) and Lavenham (20 minutes), which have more pretty medieval buildings to discover. For more East Anglian countryside, you're about half an hour from the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Essex border or an hour from the Suffolk Heritage Coast. You could also take yourself off for rambles around National Trust properties like Kentwell Hall (20 minutes) or Melford Hall (15 minutes), or make a day of it punting past historic colleges on The Backs in Cambridge (50 minutes). After a day out shopping, bar hopping or sampling traditional Suffolk ales? Both Bury St Edmunds (30 minutes) and Ipswich (an hour) have a range of shops, food spots and breweries where you can experience the best treats that this rural region has to offer.
