If exclusivity is what you’re after, that’s exactly what you’ll get at Oak Farm Glampsite, with a glorious lakeside setting near Diss in Norfolk. Yes, you can have a luxuriously appointed bell tent – sleeping up to four people and any canine pals – all to yourself on a working farm, as well as a large grass pitch with a private garden area and access to waterside walks. So what is the accommodation? A well-furnished bell tent with all bed linen supplied on a king-size bed (add the sofa bed for extra guests), kept warm and toasty by a woodburner (a starter pack of kindling is complimentary) that doubles as a water heater for morning cuppas (tea, coffee and sugar are included, handily). Bedding and towels are included for the first two guests, but others must either bring their own or hire bedding and towels on site. You can wake up to exceptional views of the lake and all its resident wildlife, enjoy the view all day from the outdoor seating and watch birds fly in at dusk as you spark up the firepit for a barbecue. An electric shower and kitchenette with mains electricity (plus water, a fridge, a sink, a microwave, a toaster, a kettle and store cupboard basics) are a short walk away close to the car park. Please note that the pitch is on a slight incline, and you’ll need to be able to push a wheelbarrow to the site bearing your camping gear as cars are not permitted by the tent. Forgotten anything? There’s a well-stocked shop in the local village of Dickleburgh (five minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

War history buffs may be in their element here, with WWII memorabilia displayed in a former control tower at The 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum (five minutes), the bijou The Red Feather Club 95th Bomb Group Museum (20 minutes) and vintage aircraft at Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum (15 minutes). Other historic sights to take in include local windmills Billingford (10 minutes) and Thelnetham (25 minutes), both open for occasional tours led by experts (check when they are open). Norwich (40 minutes) is a lovely city with an ancient history encompassing a 12th-century cathedral, Anglo-Saxon finds in Norwich Castle Museum and pretty Tudor-era streets like Elm Hill and Wensum Street. Holidaying with the kids? A trip to Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm (40 minutes) let them get up close to cuddly sheep and feed piglets (in season), and if the siren call of a day at the seaside is to much for you to ignore, it’s less than 50 minutes’ drive to numerous beaches including Southwold, Walberswick, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.
