Prefer somewhere off the beaten track? The camping field at Eastgate Farm may only be 15 minutes’ drive from Royston and half an hour from Cambridge, but both places seem far, far away from this back-to-basics spot. Just a handful of level grass pitches are available on the small farm site, with no-frills facilities stretching to a shower and toilet, washing-up sink, water fill-up and waste disposal.   Barbecues are permitted on the camping field (you’ll need to bring all the gear with you), and you can stock up on groceries in small supermarkets in Bassingbourn (five minutes’ drive) or do larger shops in Royston. If you’d rather have a complete break from cooking, there are several pubs within 10 minutes’ drive, or you could make a night of it in Cambridge restaurants. A few practicalities now: as this is a rural working farm with livestock, please expect the sights, sounds and smells of a farm, and while dogs are welcome, please keep them on leads when you’re on site. While the ground is level and flat, it can get wet in late autumn. There is occasional traffic noise too, but rarely at night.

Powered grass campsite

Liked Host messaged during day to introduce herself and check eta. She was there to greet us and let us in despite us arriving later than we first stated. She then showed us where toilets and shower was. The site was quiet and lovely to wake up to baaing sheep in the morning.

Disliked The shower and toilets were very small. Not a problem for us as we only stayed one night but might have been a problem if my children were young.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Let's be real.

If your looking for 5* or even 3* with lots of stuff to do on site, this is not the place for you.

Its a very basic site set on a working farm (so expect the sounds and smells of a farm).

It does however meet all your basic needs.

Sarah was very welcoming and quickly set about giving me the gate lock code and making sure I had everything I needed.

Large pitches, with plenty of space so you can keep your car next to you, and although not perfect each pitch is mostly level.
At night its pitch black and beautifully quiet.

There is 1 shower cubicle (which I didnt use because I like the privacy of my own space in my caravan) with a toilet, then a separate toilet as well.
But both were clean.

Large washing up area (although no hot water here).
Chemical waste area in place.

I visited because I was attending Duxford's flying finale event and Shuttleworths race air show and the site is perfectly positioned between the 2 (roughly half an hour to either museum).
And their not bad driver either.

There's a reason Ive returned to using this site. . . And ill go back again.

Disliked The phone signal is extremely limited, which isnt something the owner can fix (unless they install wifi for guests) so if your planning on being there with kids that need entertainment- make sure you have shows/films downloaded onto your device.

And a little light by the gate lock would be great because after both event i got back the evening when it was dark

Liked We had a fantastic stay at this lovely campsite near Duxford. The location was perfect—peaceful and relaxing, while still being conveniently close to local attractions and places to visit.

The site was well maintained, clean, and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. What really made our visit special was how accommodating and helpful Sarah was. She was incredibly welcoming, friendly, and went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable.

The atmosphere was warm and relaxed, with plenty of space to unwind and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. We would definitely recommend this campsite to anyone visiting the Duxford area and would happily stay here again. A wonderful place to stay, made even better by Sarah’s fantastic hospitality!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Lovely little site with sheep as your neighbours. Pitches a really good size and the lady on site is very welcoming and friendly. Good toilets and shower on site and a sink area for washing up plus chemical toilet emptying. Secure site too

Disliked The road is busier than you think being a little country lane so something to bear in mind for light sleepers. Traffic going past till around 11pm

There’s masses to pique the interest of plane buffs in these parts; you could start with the range of vintage aircraft, fighter planes, naval helicopters and stealth bombers at IWM Duxford (half an hour’s drive). There are more historic planes displayed at Shuttleworth (25 minutes), along with trams, motorbikes and steam engines too. If that’s not up your street, tour the neoclassical mansion at National Trust - Wimpole Estate (15 minutes), or check out the Jacobean architecture and Capability Brown-designed gardens at Audley End House and Gardens (35 minutes). And of course Cambridge (half an hour) is known for fabulous art at the Fitzwilliam Museum and contemporary Kettle’s Yard, and you can also explore spectacular colleges like medieval Peterhouse and Tudor-era Kings. If the kids would rather be running around outdoors, treat them to paintballing challenges at the Apocalypse Paintball and Airsoft activity centre (10 minutes), where you can also play laser tag and bubble football. Animal-lovers can meet red pandas and big cats at Shepreth Wildlife Park (15 minutes), or watch raptor displays and cuddle alpacas at Herrings Green Activity Farm and Bird of Prey Centre (35 minutes).
