  • Well-maintained, peaceful site behind a pub in Long Itchington
  • Warwick Castle and British Motor Museum within 25 minutes' drive
  • Traditional pub with open fire, beer garden and visiting food vans
If you’re a fan of a good pint of proper beer, you may well have come across the name Long Itchington before – this pretty Warwickshire village has no fewer than six pubs selling good-quality real ales, with three of them getting a mention in the Good Beer Guide. One of those pubs is The Green Man, a lovely traditional pub that’s got a large quiet and flat camping field behind it – just the spot for a little rural break with countryside walks by day and a survey of local hostelries by night. The surrounding area is a good one for walkers, who can head out for rambles along a disused railway line, or stroll along the banks of the Grand Union Canal. And there are plenty more options for days out too – perhaps to Warwick Castle, the British Motor Museum or Royal Leamington Spa (which can be reached on a bus from just outside the pub). Wherever you choose to roam, you’ll be coming back to a well-maintained and peaceful site where you’ll have access to pub toilets (but please note there are no showers or electric hookups). And of course you’ll be wanting a drink… which can be consumed inside by the open fire or out in the beer garden in sunnier weather. The pub doesn’t do food, but a fish and chip van (said to be ‘legendary’) stops by on Friday nights at about 8pm and you’re welcome to eat your meal at the pub. Otherwise, see what’s on offer at one of the other locals, or stop by at the small supermarket two minutes’ walk away and pick up supplies to get your barbecue going.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked A lovely welcome from the owner nice kept site
The bathrooms were kept spotlessly clean with plenty of loo roll and hand soap
Some fantastic walks down either the canal/River or Old railway line and loads of pubs to stop off at along the way
A chip van stops outside on Friday's but we didn't try it as we didn't know about it at the time
Lovely cafe along the railway line but not sure what days

Disliked The loose grass as it rained and we trampled it in our van

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The pitch area was lovely and the pub its self if fantastic

Disliked The campsite facilities were terrible and in a poor state of repair, there was no toilet paper in either toilet and neither shower was working, looks like it was all made cheaply a long time ago, it really lets down what would otherwise be a great stop on a tour

From the manager: Thank you for your visit to us and your feed back, we are sorry that our facilities are not up to your standards, both the shower do work but are on pull cord switches and are turned off while not in use, sorry this wasn’t communicated with you. Toilet paper is regularly topped up but obviously haven’t been done at that time a phone call to the pub or popping in to speak to a member of staff could have resolve this instantly.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Small site at rear of lovely pub, albeit pub is closed on Mondays and doesn’t serve foot other than weekends. Has two small shower toilet rooms, which are kept clean. I stay most years as a gear shakedown location. This year stayed on a Monday so couldn’t use the pub, but there are other pubs a very short walk away (5 mins) and a local co-op. Monday morning appears to be the keg delivery day for the pub and other than that a peaceful site.

All pitches are very close to facilities due to size of site. We pitched by the small pond with running water pump, which was nice.

Disliked Hot water at dish cleaning station would be a bonus

The Grand Union Canal runs through the village, with a towpath running along the bank for walkers/cyclists. The Burton Dassett Hills (15 minutes’ drive) make another good spot to head for, or you could try Draycote Water (15 minutes) for fishing and watersports as well as walks or bike rides. Warwick Castle (25 minutes) is a must-see for those who’ve not been before; Compton Verney Art Gallery and Park (20 minutes), Charlecote House (25 minutes) and Upton House and Garden (25 minutes) make good alternatives for a change of scene. There are plenty of options around for damp-day activities too, including outings to the British Motor Museum (20 minutes), Coventry Transport Museum (25 minutes) and Coventry Music Museum (25 minutes).
