  • Park in the grounds of a country inn close to walking footpaths
  • A 20-minute drive from Alton Towers and 25 from the Peak District
  • Meals served at the pub; play area and farm animals in grounds
Charlie Bassetts, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a fab pub (closed on Mondays) serving up homemade food and tasty ales, is a place many of the smart folk who’ve visited quite rightly deem a hidden gem. See for yourself by settling down at this destination in Dilhorne, 20 minutes from the rides at one of Britain’s best theme parks, Alton Towers, and the aquatic antics at Waterworld. It's in an easy-access section of Staffordshire, just off the A50 road and 15 minutes' drive from Stoke-on-Trent. Popular Peak District towns like Buxton (25 minutes) and Bakewell (an hour) are easy to get to too. Rather roams over rollercoasters? Potter through the Peak District (25 minutes) – there are plenty of pretty paths over yonder as well as closer to the site if you’d rather not drive. Ambles are to be had in the grounds too, over by the farm animals or to the play area, where mums and dads are regularly seen supervising the kids in front of a scenic background. When the tiddlers start to get peckish, stroll over to the inn for food. The pub is open from lunchtime till late every day but Monday (there are no breakfasts available). And what about those essential amenities of life? The site has separate ladies' and gents' toilet blocks with showers, as well as a washing-up area.

What customers say

This well-kept site offers spacious, clean pitches with electric hookups and water. Guests rave about friendly staff, the pub's great food/atmosphere, and the charming rural setting. New toilet/shower blocks are a big upgrade. While usually quiet, some mention pub garden noise. Limited facilities noted, but upgrades are planned. Highly recommended; many plan to return.

Liked The warm welcome from the staff on site.
From the moment we arrived we were welcomed on site by the old man with the voice box gadget. He was fabulous, he went out of his way to help us to our pitch. The site is nice and peaceful, and it was such a great atmosphere in the pub, very relaxed, the staff were brilliant. We travel around the midlands to various sites, and this is one which we have hearted and we will be back.

Disliked This site is brilliant, the only downside is the wi-fi, it didn’t cover our caravan but hey, it meant more time with the other half😄

Power optional grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Everything.
Stayed before but it definitely didn’t disappoint the second time round. Staff extremely helpful and friendly. Had food on Friday night, my husband had the mixed grill which was enormous but extremely good. We played bingo on Saturday night, a little quieter in the pub as Friday night was open mic night and very busy but fantastic atmosphere.
I used the showers which were absolutely immaculate.
Electric was optional and could pay night by night if you wanted. Absolutely live this place.

Liked I recently had a fantastic experience at this campsite. The easy access made it a breeze to arrive, and the large pitches provided plenty of space for comfort. The environment was incredibly friendly, making everyone feel welcome. Additionally, the pub served lovely homemade food, which was a delightful treat. Highly recommend!

Disliked One thing I did notice is the WiFi didn’t reach my pitch (6)

Liked What a great site. Lovely food and a well maintained site with clean facilities. Big pitches too!! Hard standing and grass, plenty of room and picnic tables everywhere. Loved it

Local attractions

This is an ace base for trips to Alton Towers (20 minutes’ drive) for folk who fancy riding rollercoasters like the Nemesis and Oblivion. Spend one day scampering among the top-class attractions here, then slow things down the next with countryside explores. The Peak District National Park (around 25 minutes) is full of walking paths, while other spots like Trentham Gardens (20 minutes) are top for traipsing round too. If checking out cheeky creatures is more your bag, head to Trentham Monkey Forest (20 minutes) and wander among the free-roaming animals. Around 140 Barbary macaques live in the woodlands and meadows here – make sure to look up and spot them swinging through the trees. Once you’ve snapped pics of the primates, set your sights on some of the market towns scattered around the area. Stone, a settlement on the Trent and Mersey Canal (15 minutes), is well-regarded for its food and drink options, while Cheadle (55 minutes), just outside the wood-covered Churnet Valley and the scenic Staffordshire Moorlands, is worth stopping in too.
