  • Dog-friendly farm-style site on the edge of the Peak District
  • A 20-minute drive from Buxton and 25 minutes from Alton Towers
  • Walking distance from watersports and pubs; walking trails nearby
Pining to get away to the pretty Peak District? From Camping at The Hollies, a farm-style site on the edge of the national park, you’ll be able to put your best foot forward and get to walking or biking through valleys, woods and caverns… or mix it up with a meander in some of the park's characterful towns such as Buxton, 20 minutes’ drive away, and Bakewell, half an hour's drive away. The backdrop here is The Roaches – just one of the good spots for hiking in the area. There are more walks accessible right from the site or a short car ride away. While you’re exploring, you may want to pay a visit to Tittesworth Reservoir, just 15 minutes’ walk away down the road and a proper watersports haven. Pubs are also on hand to keep up the merry time, including a couple within walking distance. In Hartington, 20 minutes’ drive away, there are village shops, cafés and tea rooms for a coffee and a cake (or two, depending on how far you’ve walked). Leek (five minutes’ drive) or Rudyard (15 minutes) are other local spots with shops, restaurants and pubs. On site, a few sheep and chickens roam around. Plus, a resident pizza van called Pipers Pizzas sells delicious stonebaked pizzas (done in a woodfired oven and very much liked by many guests) every Friday and Saturday from 4pm and on bank holiday Sundays from 4pm. There are basic facilities – on-site toilets (proper ones, not portable-style) are provided, and there are four showers (bring coins for the meters if you want to use these). Firepits are available to hire, but they require a cash-only deposit, and you'll only be allowed to burn wood purchased on site. To make sure everyone gets a good night's sleep, quiet hours are set between 10pm and 7am.

What customers say

Great location for exploring The Roaches & Reservoir with stunning views. Offers spacious pitches & friendly staff. Basic but clean facilities; showers £1 for 5 mins. Popular pizza van on site. Some road noise & potential for boggy ground in wet weather.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Location is great

Disliked Wish it didn’t come to this review but here we are - we had a bad experience whilst camping here, myself and my friend pitched up near a path and saw some lads walking up and down the path, when we spoke to them they said they had been using it for a few days. When we walked down the path the owner showed up telling us to go out of the campsite and down the road to the main entrance, even though we had just came from our tent. We did as he said to avoid confrontation but when we got back to the tent they came past staring at us giving us dirty looks.

We did leave a poor review on google due to this however the owners replied incredibly defensive stating they informed us that we were trespassing and “politely” asked us to “use the main entrance”. If this had been the case, the google review would never have been made. At no point were the owners polite and they never informed us that we were trespassing. Maybe a sign would be useful to stop this from happening again. We didn’t climb over any fences as they claim we did.

I think the replies made from the owners to every review in google that is not 5 stars proves their confrontational and defensive manner. You can see for yourself the way they have an answer back to every criticism in reviews - not just our own! Any decent business would take on board the constructive criticism left by their customers and strive to do better. Instead it’s a lot of blaming people and snarky replies.

They even went as far as cancelling my booking on Pitchup to try and avoid us leaving a review. I’m guessing this is the reason they only have good reviews on Pitchup - however we think people should be aware of the owners actions and confrontational/rude manner before booking. I think if a business is trying that hard to silence people with a simple criticism, that reflects how they may handle an issue with a booking in person and people should be aware of this before booking (there are other reviews on Google to back this up). The path situation was never that big of a deal, if they had politely told us we were trespassing (which we didn’t know until they replied to our google review) we would have happily left without no issues.

On another note, the showers were dirty and the placement of the toilets next to the food area is so weird. I was queuing for the toilet next to someone making food.

All in all, be wary of staying here. Owners seem to be very abrupt and defensive.

Disliked Tea was a bit wishy washy and the food cart should be away from the toilet block ideally.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Great location close to Tittersworth Reservoir and Leek. Toilet and shower facilities were fine. People seemed to keep to noise down at night

Disliked People camped very close even though there was a lot of free space, may be good to try and introduce some more shady areas as that was probably the reason as it was a very hot and sunny weekend.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Good location walking distance to reservoir and pubs. Roaches is a short drive away. Flat pitches, proper toilets and friendly staff.

Disliked Needs an extra toilet/shower block as only 4 toilets for whole site which is inadequate.
Weirdly the pizza van is right next to the toilets which is pretty gross.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your review luke.... Just to clarify there are infact 6 toilets and 1 urinal.
4 toilets, 4 showers, 1 urinal and a washing up station at the top of the first field.
Plus 2 toilets, elsan point, and another washing up station at the bottom of the first field.

Only stopped one night but had a great stay. We had pizza…

Local attractions

In such a scenic setting, you may well spend a lot of your time outdoors … there’s a valley trail and Thor’s Cave in Manifold Valley (20 minutes’ drive) and cavern tours and woodland walks around Poole's Cavern & Buxton Country Park (15 minutes). Skip over the stepping stones at Park Dovedale & the White Peak (half an hour) or do the loop around Dovedale (half an hour), another top beauty spot. Rudyard Lake (20 minutes) is heavy on adventure too, with an activity centre, steam railway, cycle paths and boat trips. If you’re particularly daring, Madrenaline Activities (10 minutes) runs outdoor activities such as segways, axe throwing and archery. Alton Towers (25 minutes) has many more adrenaline thrills. Family-friendly attractions are all around, including Peak Wildlife Park (15 minutes) and the ice cream farm at Blaze Farm & The Potty Sheep (20 minutes). If it’s a peaceful place you’re after, Bakewell (half an hour) and Matlock (45 minutes) both fit the bill. The former has Bakewell puddings and a medieval bridge and the latter is a historic spa town. Biddulph Grange Garden (20 minutes), a National Trust landscaped Victorian garden, is just as peaceful.
