Weston Pools Village: The Stretton Pool

General

  • Peaceful Shropshire site with five coarse fishing pools
  • Within an hour of outdoor activities in Snowdonia and Shropshire Hills
  • Clubhouse bar and food; heated bathrooms; five minutes from Oswestry

Ooh, this place is an Eden for anglers… a peaceful, tree-lined patch of the Shropshire countryside with five pools for coarse fishing, designed and built by the proprietor who, as you might imagine, is pretty keen on the sport himself.

A five-minute drive from Oswestry, Weston Pools Village is a green and well-tended site, whose ponds for match and pleasure angling are stuffed with carp, barbel, tench and bream.

It can get chilly out there contemplating the waters, but that can soon be remedied thanks to the heated washrooms with piping hot showers. There’s also a cheery clubhouse with a bar and fresh hot food served on Friday afternoons and for Sunday lunch, and further eating and supping options a short distance away in Oswestry. Barbecues are allowed on site.

If by chance there should be a few hours when you’re not landing 20-pound monsters on the pools, there’s grand stuff to get up to in the surrounding area. Start in Oswestry with wanders round the town and Cambrian Railway museums and walks to Oswald’s Well, where legends say the limbs of the eighth-century King Oswald were dropped by a raven. 'Tis a myth, but you may have heard fisherfolk telling bigger whoppers…

The staff couldn't have been more welcoming and made a massive fuss of our little girl who had her birthday whilst there

Clean toilets, well appointed hobbit house, comfortable beds

    Disliked:

Staff were too busy having a chat to check us in and then we’re very abrupt. Pod was not clean and the fridge absolutely stunk. The fridge was also mouldy and dirty. Hobbit houses located on main stony access road, that isn’t clear on the photos, not the most relaxing place to sit out in the evening. We are 2 hikers that don’t want for much but this is definitely not a return visit place for us. Obviously better for fishing.

From the manager...

I’m sorry you e had this experience, our hobbit houses are usually spotless and fabulous and comfy at a great value for money as we provide everything you need,
I do apologise as the fridge looks awful and I will be having words with our cleaning agency as this is totally unacceptable.

When you checked in I’m sorry but my staff are usually super friendly and accommodating as most reviews state.

I just wish you had brought it to our attention as we could of rectified it immediately.

We have many people stay over including hikers not just fishermen.
Also fishermen do like things just so too and I will make sure this never happens again.

Many regards
Rachael

We stayed on a good sized service pitch. The site was very peaceful both during the day and in the evening, we really enjoyed our stay here. The clubhouse was very popular with good food and a wide range of drinks and just a two minute walk from pitch. The site is well used by fishing enthusiasts, there are several fishing ponds which are well stocked. We brought bikes with us and were able to easily cycle to Oswestry along country lanes. The toilets and showers were immaculate both on site and in the clubhouse.

    Disliked:

There was nothing to dislike about this site. I think if anything to add it would be to perhaps put some bins & recycling points near the toilets instead of having to take rubbish & recycling around to the bins at the back of the clubhouse. This is not a complaint just a suggestion.

Local attractions

Heading here for hikes in the hills? It’s 50 minutes’ drive to the heath-covered slopes and waterfalls of Carding Mill Valley in the Shropshire Hills and to walk the nature-filled ridge of Wenlock Edge. Quad biking, zipwires and clay pigeon shooting are all available at the adventure centre.

To get active on the water, Lake Bala beckons an hour away with canoeing, kayaking and windsurfing, alternatively you could stay on land with a mountain bike trip through the Snowdonia hills or take things easy on a time-travelling steam train trip.

For further time travel, there’s a trio of castles nearby: 12th-century Whittington Castle is 10 minutes' drive away, while Chirk and Powys Castles can be perused within a half-hour trip. Don’t miss a flit round Hawkstone Park Follies either (45 minutes), a madcap estate of statues and grottoes amid cliffs and crags and thick forests.

Smaller companions will be smiling all day at Park Hall Farm (20 minutes), where pig racing and lamb feeding meet zipwires, adventure playgrounds and go-karts. And there’s surely no-one who can’t love a canal boat ride from Llangollen… to find out why, get out onto the water half an hour from base.
