  • Peaceful rural site with panoramic views of the Chiltern Hills
  • On the Ridgeway Trail, less than 30 minutes from Oxford and Reading
  • Dog-friendly site; campfires permitted, with wood for sale
Disconnect from the world and plug in to nature at Ridgeway View Campsite, a spacious, back to basics site under 30 minutes by car from both Oxford and Reading. Generous pitches here are surrounded by Oxfordshire wheatfields with the Chiltern Hills beyond. This quiet site takes its name from the ancient trackway it backs onto. Now one of the UK’s popular National Trails, the Ridgeway 87-mile route is known as ‘Britain’s oldest road’ – walk here to follow in the footsteps of 5,000 years' worth of travellers. Less than a mile away, visitors can link up with the wildlife-rich Thames Path too. Also within walking distance (just far enough to build up an appetite for lunch) are several great pubs – plot your routes to take in the hostelries in Crowmarsh Gifford or Hailey. Something a bit more active in mind (or need to get some stress out)? Book a session at Ridgeway View's own axe-throwing range, which is a 15-minute drive away from the site. For stocking up on essentials, taking tea and cake or pottering around the shops, pop to the historic market town of Wallingford (five minutes’ drive), where you should also seek out the blue plaque for famed novelist Agatha Christie (British TV watchers may also recognise the area as the setting for Midsomer Murders). Half an hour’s drive to the north brings you to Oxford, and the same distance south is Reading. Guests have access to just a few back to basics facilities, including portable toilets and cold-water showers. Barbecues and campfires are permitted if raised off the ground – firewood is available to buy, and cooking slabs can be hired. Considerate dog owners are welcome and there’s plenty of space nearby for the canines to stretch their legs. On the farm there’s a no-noise policy at night past 10.30pm, so that everyone can enjoy a bit of rural peace.

What customers say

A basic, spacious, and peaceful campsite with stunning views, ideal for walkers. While facilities are limited to portaloos and cold showers, they are kept clean. The self-pitched field offers great value, though shade is minimal.

Primitive grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great location and campsite, I can highly recommend.
From before arrival, checking in and leaving, Ridgeway was easy, informative and relaxed. Facilities are great for a get away from it all , and having the cold showers in the 30°C heat was bliss. I can highly recommend, the campsite is only a few miles walk from Wallingford and easy reach of the Ridgeway path and Thames path

Primitive grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Loved it all, massive site, bins were emptied twice a day, toilets were clean and checked twice a day. We got a taxi from the site to the town which was very good considering how remote it is. Kept us up to date regarding camp fires and refunded the money within our stay! as it was far to dry and hot for fires

Disliked The only down side is there 0 shade. The nearest shade is within tree lines

Primitive grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked A beautiful back to basics site. Such a tranquil location. Guys on site were brilliant. Full of local knowledge and friendly.
Bonus was a lovely 30 minute countryside walk to the Woodcote Steam Rally. Highly recommend this campsite to people for future steam rallies.

Primitive grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Our 2nd visit. Lovely flat field. Quiet and peaceful. Good location - 20 mins to Henley and a short drive to Wallingford.

Disliked None. Although perhaps add a couple of portaloos and showers at the far end of the field?

Primitive grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked If you're after a campsite that truly lets you switch off, soak up stunning scenery, and enjoy proper space between pitches – this is the one. From the moment of arrival, the panoramic views were breathtaking, and the peaceful atmosphere was exactly what was needed. With a strict no-noise policy after 10:30pm and generous space between pitches, it really delivers that remote, back-to-nature feel.

The site proudly describes itself as “back to basics”, and it absolutely delivers – in the best possible way. The portaloos were spotlessly clean, and while the showers were certainly on the cold side, they were surprisingly refreshing. It all added to the wild, outdoorsy experience.

One of the best features? The freedom to choose your own pitch – no crowding, no being crammed in – just open space, quiet surroundings, and room to spread out. Firepits are available to buy on site, and watching the little fires glowing as the sun set across the landscape was genuinely beautiful – a perfect end to a calm evening.

The site owner and staff made regular walkarounds, checking everything was in order, loos remained clean, firepits were delivered, and the peaceful vibe was maintained.

A pop-up pizza stand made an appearance during the stay – separate from the campsite itself, but a brilliant touch. The pizzas were tasty, reasonably priced, and served by someone clearly passionate about what they do. Definitely worth trying if it’s there.

Another bonus: it was easy to sit down and get some work done on a laptop with zero distractions – and the mobile signal/data was absolutely fine. It's rare to find somewhere this peaceful that still allows you to stay connected when needed.

If you're unsure about portaloos or chilly showers – don’t let that put you off visiting.

Incredible value for money when you consider what’s on offer: true peace, space, and stunning views. A hidden gem that’s already high on the list for a return visit.

Tip: Smartphone photos capture the setting well enough, but if you’ve got access to a DSLR – amateur or professional – it’s absolutely worth bringing. The landscape deserves it.

Local attractions

On a summer’s evening, there’s nothing quite like messing about on the river – hire a boat nearby at Wallingford Bridge or Benson Waterfront (both five minutes' drive). Sipping a glass of wine comes a close second, so Brightwell Vineyard (10 minutes) could be a good shout too. For wildlife enthusiasts, Cholsey Marsh Nature Reserve is 10 minutes away by car or a pleasant hour’s walk taking in the Thames Path along the river. And children (and quite possibly grownups) are bound to love a visit to Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes’ drive). To get the blood pumping, you could brave the local skydiving (five minutes) and watersports (15 minutes) centres.
