  • Peaceful rural site with panoramic views of the Chiltern Hills
  • On the Ridgeway Trail, less than 30 minutes from Oxford and Reading
  • Dog-friendly site; campfires permitted, with wood for sale
Disconnect from the world and plug in to nature at Ridgeway View Campsite, a spacious, back to basics site under 30 minutes by car from both Oxford and Reading. Generous pitches here are surrounded by Oxfordshire wheatfields with the Chiltern Hills beyond. This quiet site takes its name from the ancient trackway it backs onto. Now one of the UK’s popular National Trails, the Ridgeway 87-mile route is known as ‘Britain’s oldest road’ – walk here to follow in the footsteps of 5,000 years' worth of travellers. Less than a mile away, visitors can link up with the wildlife-rich Thames Path too. Also within walking distance (just far enough to build up an appetite for lunch) are several great pubs – plot your routes to take in the hostelries in Crowmarsh Gifford or Hailey. Something a bit more active in mind (or need to get some stress out)? Book a session at Ridgeway View's own axe-throwing range, which is a 15-minute drive away from the site. For stocking up on essentials, taking tea and cake or pottering around the shops, pop to the historic market town of Wallingford (five minutes’ drive), where you should also seek out the blue plaque for famed novelist Agatha Christie (British TV watchers may also recognise the area as the setting for Midsomer Murders). Half an hour’s drive to the north brings you to Oxford, and the same distance south is Reading. Guests have access to just a few back to basics facilities, including portable toilets and cold-water showers. Barbecues and campfires are permitted if raised off the ground – firewood is available to buy, and cooking slabs can be hired. Considerate dog owners are welcome and there’s plenty of space nearby for the canines to stretch their legs. On the farm there’s a no-noise policy at night past 10.30pm, so that everyone can enjoy a bit of rural peace.

Primitive grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Beautiful site, manager introduced himself, you can report noise etc by text! Loved the basic facilities and the scenery. Lovely to see children playing in the evening. Easy access to beautiful ridgeway walking.

Disliked This is not on the campsite but some idiot in a fake rust motorhome parked up literally touching our tent! He wasn’t there when we arrived so we didn’t know, but he must have been out for the day and so territorial about the spot that he returned to the exact same spot despite our tent now being there! What a clown! There was so much space! This is a disadvantage of not having marked out spots but luckily there aren’t many idiots like that and it didn’t spoil our stay!

We would certainly come to this campsite again but with ear plugs.

Primitive grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked First impression was fab: peaceful, lovely 360 view, no road nearby. Toilets had hand washing facilities and the showers were private. The site is flat making for easy pitch up. We had a campfire in one of the camps fire pits using our own wood. I spoke with the owner over the phone who was very polite and friendly, also they had a pizza van on site which was very handy due to the location.

Disliked Unfortunately, there was a group of drunk ‘lads’ about 30m away from our pitch, who were awake into the early hours (approx 3am) and being very loud. So I only had a few hours sleep overall and it was very broken. I really wasn’t expecting this as the site was so quiet and peaceful on arrival.
If I had earplugs this would’ve helped, however the preference would be that someone would’ve policed the noise levels and ensured folk were adhering to the ‘lower volumes after 10.30’ rule.
Due to the lack of wind, the noise was carrying well and it sounded like they could’ve been stood right outside our tent! It was very frustrating but I didn’t feel comfortable approaching a group of males in the early hours myself to ask them to be quiet.
Everything else was perfect but being as I didn’t really sleep and the groups noise were putting me on edge, I have to give a 7.

From the manager: Hi Chloe, I'm sorry about the noise. I did do a walk around just before midnight and all was well but it is impractical for staff to be on site at 3 in the morning.
We do expect everyone to self police and we advertise that it's a quiet site although sadly some people do forget where they are.
We do hope this hasn't put you off coming back in the future!

Had a lovely stay in my camper van with my granddaughter.

Liked Pitch where you like, huge flat field, loads of clean portaloos. Didn't use the open air cold showers but they looked fine. Pizza man on a Saturday was a nice touch. Easy access to the ridgeway for walks.

Liked What’s not to like?

This was our second stay at Ridgeway View. Its tranquil, calming nature drew us back once again. Pitch up, sit back, crack open a beer, and relax at this back-to-basics campsite.

There’s plenty of space for football and frisbee with the children, making it perfect for families.

The portaloos are clean and spacious, and there are cold showers and running water — everything you need to keep things simple and stress-free.

We’ll be back, again and again — without a doubt.

Primitive grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great location and campsite, I can highly recommend.
From before arrival, checking in and leaving, Ridgeway was easy, informative and relaxed. Facilities are great for a get away from it all , and having the cold showers in the 30°C heat was bliss. I can highly recommend, the campsite is only a few miles walk from Wallingford and easy reach of the Ridgeway path and Thames path

Local attractions

On a summer’s evening, there’s nothing quite like messing about on the river – hire a boat nearby at Wallingford Bridge or Benson Waterfront (both five minutes' drive). Sipping a glass of wine comes a close second, so Brightwell Vineyard (10 minutes) could be a good shout too. For wildlife enthusiasts, Cholsey Marsh Nature Reserve is 10 minutes away by car or a pleasant hour’s walk taking in the Thames Path along the river. And children (and quite possibly grownups) are bound to love a visit to Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes’ drive). To get the blood pumping, you could brave the local skydiving (five minutes) and watersports (15 minutes) centres.
