  • Peaceful, well-kept park with six lakes, walking trails and wildlife
  • A 15-minute drive to Lincoln; half an hour to the Lincolnshire Wolds
  • Café-bar, wifi, play area, takeaway food and fishing
Rural roams are firmly on the agenda at Hanworth Country Park, a serene site dotted with pretty paths and six lakes around 15 minutes’ drive from Lincoln. And angling’s on the cards too – four of the bodies of water here, stocked with mirror carp, common carp, chub, barbel, ide, perch, roach and tench, are open for fishing. There’s also a café-bar to order takeaway food and drink (with a handful of tables if you fancy eating in). Travelling with the tiddlers? Let them roam free in the play area. Animals are also often seen scampering around the park, especially around the lakes and woodland: think buzzards, red kites, woodpeckers and kestrels, as well as brown hares, squirrels, hedgehogs and deer. Attempt to catch a glimpse of these critters while roving along routes through the country park, either on foot or by bike; a favourite trails is the famed Lincolnshire Spires and Steeples path, which runs through the park and ends up at Lincoln Cathedral. Closer by is the village of Potterhanworth (10 minutes’ walk), a peaceful place with a handful of amenities including a large playing field with a play park, a skateboard park and tennis courts. A pub’s in the centre of the village – handy for evening drinks – and there’s a bus stop plying the Lincoln to Sleaford and Lincoln to Boston routes for explores via public transport. Surrounding villages such as Metheringham, Branston, Heighington and Washingborough are all within five miles and have conveniences like food shops, inn, takeaways, cafés, butchers and post offices.

Hanworth Country Park has spacious, clean sites with friendly staff. Guests love the great cafe/bar, fishing, and dog walks. Facilities are good, though could use an update. Close to Lincoln & Red Arrows practice. Train noise is minor. Great for a relaxing trip.

The Owl shepherd's hut (pet friendly)

Liked Just what I wanted for a couple of nights. The shepherd's hut was very nice.
Warm, cosy bed which was very comfortable.

Disliked The heater seemed to be on but never got warm. Had the same problem with the heater in one of the pods previously.
So generally it was cold in there other than when in bed.

Camping pod (comfort, no pets, double)

Liked Clean, good price, close to toilet blocks, hot water in the shower, ponds, birds singing in the morning and beautiful sunrises. Silence and rest.

Disliked The doors aren't airtight. The mattress needs replacing—you can feel the springs under your back. Wi-Fi only one hour free. The rest isn't that important, so I won't go into detail.

Local attractions

Pootling around on public transport? The nearest train station is in Metheringham (five minutes’ drive) for catching a ride to places including Peterborough, Sleaford and Doncaster. Lincoln (15 minutes) has a larger station with access to more destinations, but it’s worth lingering in this lovely city for a little while before fleeing further afield. Don’t miss the castle and cathedral or the shops and eateries in the cobblestoned Bailgate area. Keen to blend a few historically minded expeditions into your stay? Learn all about the Second World War at the International Bomber Command Centre (10 minutes), a memorial and interpretation complex dedicated to the RAF force that helped bring D-Day about.
