  • Serene site inside an orchard and garden in the Lincolnshire Fens
  • Shrubberies Nature Reserve and Holbeach town under a 10-minute drive
  • Barbecues and campfires are permitted around the grounds
How best to sum up the setting of Home Farm? Secluded yet easy to reach – so, all in all, a fine option for those seeking something of the outdoorsy experience without veering too far off grid… Pitches here sit behind a residential property, with each given a generous portion of space in the two-acre garden and orchard, and views over fields and farmland. The vibe is all remote and secluded, but it's also handily a couple of minutes by car from the A17, for speedy access to walks in the Lincolnshire Fens. Choice spots nearby include pastures and pond of The Shrubberies Nature Reserve, less than 10 minutes away by car. Just as convenient for those who don’t want to venture far are Holbeach market town’s supermarkets, pubs and other amenities (with a café for fry-ups and a farm shop for barbecue goodies around a mile or so away) To follow up supermarket sweeps with rifling the racks, Spalding and its Springfield Shopping Outlet are 35 minutes’ drive – water taxis are also available around here for bobbing up and down on the Welland River. Birdwatchers will no doubt prefer to keep binoculars poised and head to one of the local birdlife haunts – the marshlands of The Wash are about three miles away, and the site is also within easy reach of RSPB Frampton Marsh and the trails around Peter Scott's historic lighthouse (part of a cracking 13-mile ramble from Kings Lynn to The Wash) . The beauty of Home Farm is its remote and restful feel – even though it’s placed close enough to the farmhouse for security – so there are no facilities here apart from an outdoor toilet.

Field primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Tranquil orchard of trees on flat ground, beside a farmhouse with an outdoor toilet. Water easily accessible and electricity optional. Very good value for money.

Disliked: Loud, large dogs may be scary for some people.

Field primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Haven’t been camping in years , and decided last week I wanted to go somewhere to try my new gear , I received a text from Kevin the day before I went, telling me exact location and entrance to campsite , toilets etc, which made it a lot easier, the campsite was everything I hoped for , I usually like wild camping in woodland, rather than the plain field often at campsites, this place was amazing, the ground was clear and cut short and the trees were perfectly spaced, there is open area if not wanting to be under trees , I made a friend with a squirrel who was very curious as my night went on , the toilet was clean and spotless, plenty of toilet roll , had soap , air freshener, and flowers which made a nice touch , I would recommend this campsite to others and will definitely visit again , Well Done Kevin!

Orchard powered grass tent campsite

Liked: The coverage of the orchard trees gave a sense of seclusion and separation from the world that was needed for my stay at Home Farm. As well as providing some protection from the British rain! Being a good distance to the home of the owners was comforting (as a solo camper), as well as being close to their range of animal friends. Friendly guidance and welcome on my entry was much appreciated, opening a line of communication and reassurance to ask any queries if I had any issues. Loved the range of personalised and recycled camp decor situated around the campsite, including the alternative toilet sign “workshop”.

Disliked: It wasn’t an issue for my stay (as I practically had the site to myself)… however as there is only 1 toilet, I can imagine a fuller campsite could be an issue regarding use of the toilet facilities.

Orchard powered grass tent campsite

Liked: Has the potential to be a nice campsite with a fair bit of work.

Disliked: I suppose I booked this in haste, didn't read right to the end, so only found out there was no shower by reading a negative review on Google Maps the day before we arrived. Had booked 4 nights - it would have been good if the site description had made this fact a little more prominent - didn't realise a shower was optional in this day and age. And only the one loo for the whole campsite (fortunately we were the only couple there). Signage at the actual site is minimal. You have to search for the loo - it's behind the owners property. No washing up area, bins, or grey waste disposal that I could find. Difficult to find the site as satnav takes you nowhere near the site, and the texted instructions make the assumption you've come from the north end of the A17. Fortunately the nice woman at the Lodge Farm Cafe knew where it was. No warm welcome on arrival (fair enough, I can manage without). The actual pitch in the orchard looked pleasant enough, though took a while to clear the ground enough to pitch the tent. Despite all this, we might have survived the 4 night stay. Unfortunately, the A17 is not far away, and it seems to be a road that never sleeps - I put my earplugs in at 4 in the morning but could still hear constant traffic. As the sun came up, I booked into a nearby Airbnb. I've been camping on and off for 40 years, and have probably been spoilt by some of the modern campsites where we've spent the past few summers. I didn't expect wifi, but did expect peace and quiet and a shower - the facilities here were on a par with the farmer's field next to Bala Lake back in '83. I feel kinda bad/sad leaving such a negative review, though I can't understand how there are so many 10 ratings on Pitchup.

From the manager: Site facilities are listed accurately on pitch up with everything mentioned in this review detailed accurately. Ie No shower is detailed on pitch up. Ie No wifi is detailed on pitch up. Site has 8 potential pitches over a two acre field and orchard as advertised on pitch up. Rarely gets full so plenty of room. Site is a field and Orchard. Orchard is clean but under 27 Walnut Trees this time of year some basic ground clearance of the odd Walnut is to be expected. We do not hoover the ground everyday. Toilet is less than 1 metre from main house around side of house. All bookings receive email with specific site location. Ie it's 500 metres from the post code location PE12 7PP opposite Taylors Tulip bulb farm which is well signposted. A quick look at Google Maps shows proximity to A17 road which is half a mile away. Site is on Google maps to with 1 metre of accuracy so shouldn't get lost. Site is £12 per basic pitch - no limit on size of tent , parking adjacent to tent. This is not a Butlins style camp site with entertainment. It is as described a field and Orchard that provides basic pitch with camp fired allowed and that is exactly what it is. The description on pitch up is accurate with many photos taken and submitted. Looking at the details and time spent on this negative review it seems to reflect the booking was made without reading the details on pitch up and the clients experience was not as they expected.

Orchard powered grass tent campsite

Liked: The dogs and our own company

Disliked: Disgusting toilet, no maintenance, all overgrown, no real welcome, lack of power due to tripping plus not a standard camping plug on the tree (standard 3 pin like home), no one on site for days, definitely not the experience we expected.

From the manager: Toilet was cleaned at beginning of week - only booking that week apart from one night was this family and friends pitches and I had to work away for three evenings. Toilet rolls ran out on last day and were replaced on my return. This was two families and difficult to predict the amount that was used. On return inspection of toilet showed it was clean - bin was emptied as is normal and hand sanitizer replaced and a.standard clean carried out. Site has two caravan type adaptors and two normal plug connectors - adaptors are supplied for both and were provided in this instance. This gives campers an option of both plug types. Electric will trip out if used over 6 amps which is standard for camping style equipment - not suitable for heaters or none camping kettles etc - site has been open since March and no other campers have had any issues. Site does not provide entertainment - is as advertised a 2 acre field and orchard area - grass is long this time of year with mown areas for pitches . Orchard area was mown the day before their arrival. Dogs do not bark at pigs but will bark at other animals and intruders - Pigs smell at close proximity - pitches used were the two closest to the pig pen and dog run, There are pitches on other side of orchard which were empty. Value for money - a basic pitch is £12 per tent - facilities are limited as clearly stated on advert. We have two acres and 8 pitches max so plenty of space for pitches and we have excellent reviews from people using it as stop over or short break. Review on wifi- there is no wifi supplied as advertised. Chickens were on site in past but unfortunately a minority of campers allowed their children to chase them around as if they were toys and a decision was made for the birds welfare not to have free range birds - we do plan to build a secure pen and house some in the future. This is a pitch up site not a holiday park and is accurately described on pitch up with accompanying photos ,

Orchard powered grass tent campsite

Liked: Not much,

Disliked: Unfortunately this was a disaster of a stay. Previously stayed at this site twice so this time we brought our friends but it’s clear the site is not being maintained. We left early and won’t be going back again. Power kept going off, not standard camping power adapter, no toilet roll in toilet, toilet dirty and clearly not been cleaned in a while, all over grown, noisy pigs that keep you up all night, pigs kept disturbing the dogs on the site (which have previously been no problem at all) with their squeaking and then set them off barking, previously there where chickens and ducks but other than two very noisy and smelling pigs theres no other animals, very disappointing as previous breaks here have been incredibly.

Local attractions

Brought the kids with you on your country hol? Within a 15-minute drive of Home Farm are Baytree Owl and Wildlife Centre for meets and greets with nocturnal creatures, a crazy golf course for family tournaments and the Fun Farm indoor play centre for rainy days. If it’s grownup times you’re after, stately homes such as Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Peckover House (along with their lush gardens…) are under 25 minutes away; alternatively, you could swing by North Ings Farm Museum to learn about the agricultural history of the area through its displays of tractors, machinery and commercial vehicles. For sandy sessions on the coast, the beaches around Hunstanton are less than an hour’s drive away – if you detect a hint of lavender in the area, that’s because around 100 acres of fields growing the stuff (plus a centre with an oil distillery, gift shops and a restaurant) are in this region too.
