Like your history? You’ll love Whitney Bridge in Herefordshire, named after the centuries-old wooden crossing you can see from the park (you can spy the ruins of a Victorian railway bridge in the distance from here too).
As a riverside site, Whitney Bridge is a prime spot for canoeing and fishing: you can hire canoes from the site (to paddle to Brewardine), or angle for salmon in the Wye; the site has fishing rights for both sides of the river. Or just paddle or swim instead, or lounge around on the riverbank to spy the likes of otters and kingfishers...
If that's built up an appetite, a popular pub serving food is in Whitney-on-Wye, a 15-minute walk away, or you can use the barbecue on the site to cook supplies picked up from the supermarket less than 10 minutes' drive away. And as there's fishing available right from the grounds, anglers can try their hand at catching a couple of salmon too.
Up for channelling your inner Bear Grylls? Open fires are allowed at Whitney Bridge. You can eat your leftovers for breakfast the next morning… or indulge in a fully loaded breakfast roll and cup of tea delivered right to your door.

Local attractions
Whitney Bridge is less than four miles from the bookshops and open market of Hay-on-Wye. If you fancy getting on the water, it's half a day away by canoe; hire one from the park.
Venturing downstream will take you to Hereford, home of Hereford Cathedral and the Mappa Mundi, the world’s biggest medieval map. Landlubbers can be there in about half an hour by car, ready to roam around the Hereford Cider Museum as well. Like your sights even older? Arthur's Stone, the prehistoric burial chamber, is a 15-minute detour along the way.
Being on the border with Wales, there are of course fine strolls to be had in the area: heading south west, central spots in the Brecon Beacons are reachable within the hour, while 45 minutes north on the English side leads to the start of Offa’s Dyke Path. For roams beginning at Whitney Bridge, start off from the Herefordshire Way, which the site sits on, before linking up to the Wye Valley Trail.
