Historic bridge and tollhouse

General

  • River Wye and Herefordshire Way site facing a historical toll bridge
  • A 10-minute drive form Hay-on-Wye – or go by canoe from the site
  • Canoes for hire, river fishing permitted and barbecues available

Like your history? You’ll love Whitney Bridge in Herefordshire, named after the centuries-old wooden crossing you can see from the park (you can spy the ruins of a Victorian railway bridge in the distance from here too).

As a riverside site, Whitney Bridge is a prime spot for canoeing and fishing: you can hire canoes from the site (to paddle to Brewardine), or angle for salmon in the Wye; the site has fishing rights for both sides of the river. Or just paddle or swim instead, or lounge around on the riverbank to spy the likes of otters and kingfishers...

If that's built up an appetite, a popular pub serving food is in Whitney-on-Wye a 15-minute walk away, or you can use the barbecue on the site to cook supplies picked up from the supermarket under 10 minutes' drive away. And as there's fishing available right from the grounds, anglers can try their hand at catching a couple of salmon too.

Up for channelling your inner Bear Grylls? Open fires are allowed at Whitney Bridge. You can eat your leftovers for breakfast the next morning… or indulge in a fully loaded breakfast roll and cup of tea delivered right to your door.

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The incredibly friendly and accommodating hosts; Peter, Sarah and their son George. Definitely a family friendly site, and if travelling alone you have the right amount of friendliness that makes you feel welcome. That the site is unique and different small site right on the edge of the river Wye, with a working (wooden) toll bridge. Has pitches on the river bank. The toilet/shower facilities are limited for now, as the owners are upgrading campsite facilities. Firepits at most sites, with firewood available. Most pitches have a picnic table or a bench. Good little campers kitchen with fridge / charging points / kettle etc. The ability to launch canoes, or hop in for a swim. Good little shop in the toll house (fully licensed!). Their (full) breakfast baps are wonderful! Just the treat. Loved it so much, I came back again with a bunch of lads 10 days later. - It should be noted that the site is on the A438 which is quite a busy road between Hereford/Leominster and Hay-on-Wye/Brecon, so you won't be having tranquility. That being said, I wasn't disturbed by the traffic, and if you are a light sleeper (bring ear plugs). There are vehicles that cross the wooden toll bridge, that definitely has a distinctive sound, which for me added to the character of the place. - All in all its a great place. I will certainly be using it again.

Nice pitches on a slight rise, overlooking the river. Each pitch had its own fire pit and bench and the owners were very friendly. We'd forgotten to bring mugs, which they were happy to lend us and they have a tuck-shop/cafe, if you want any ice-cream, snacks or even a barbecue. Site was very well organised. There was a communal fridge, kettle, wifi and multiple charging sockets for your devices and my siblings and I hired a canoe from them, which was really fun even if we couldn't get the canoe to go straight.

Beautiful spot by the river. We paddled and fished with nets loaned by the owner who could not be more helpful. There was some building work going on which was noisy but a new kitchen and toilet/shower block will be great so as it stopped at 5 it was fine. The road is noisy but again that did calm down in the evening and was remarkably calm in the morning save for one huge lorry! So in summary beautiful spot a bit noisy from the road but new facilities will be great and super helpful owner.

Lovely spot. Great people who run it. Perfect for walks, kayaking etc. Basic but clean toilet, shower and mini kitchen.

    Disliked:

The only negative of this site is the busy road the other side of a hedge to the tent pitches. It was so loud with cars, bikes and trucks going by at +60mph throughout the night. I’m not a light sleeper but it kept me awake most the night. Probably should have realised this when I booked. I’d go there again with ear plugs!

Local attractions

Whitney Bridge is less than four miles from the bookshops and open market of Hay-on-Wye. If you fancy getting on the water, it's half a day away by canoe; hire one from the park.

Venturing downstream will take you to Hereford, home of the Hereford Cathedral and Mappa Mundi, the world’s biggest medieval map. Landlubbers can be there in about half an hour by car, ready to roam around the Hereford Cider Museum as well. Like your sights even older? Arthur's Stone, the prehistoric burial chamber, is a 15-minute detour along the way.

Being on the border with Wales, there are of course fine strolls to be had in the area: heading south west, the middle of the Brecon Beacons are reachable within the hour, while 45 minutes north on the English side leads to the start of Offa’s Dyke Path. For roams beginning at Whitney Bridge, start off from the Herefordshire Way, which the site sits on, before linking up to the Wye Valley Trail.

Must see

  • Ludlow Castle (22.9 miles)
  • Blaenavon Ironworks (23.8 miles)
  • Stokesay Castle (23.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Cwmmau Farmhouse (2.4 miles)
  • The Weir (11.7 miles)
