Whitney Bridge

Whitney Bridge is less than four miles from the bookshops and open market of Hay-on-Wye. If you fancy getting on the water, it's half a day away by canoe; hire one from the park. Venturing downstream will take you to Hereford, home of Hereford Cathedral and the Mappa Mundi, the world’s biggest medieval map. Landlubbers can be there in about half an hour by car, ready to roam around the Hereford Cider Museum as well. Like your sights even older? Arthur's Stone, the prehistoric burial chamber, is a 15-minute detour along the way. Being on the border with Wales, there are of course fine strolls to be had in the area: heading south west, central spots in the Brecon Beacons are reachable within the hour, while 45 minutes north on the English side leads to the start of Offa’s Dyke Path. For roams beginning at Whitney Bridge, start off from the Herefordshire Way, which the site sits on, before linking up to the Wye Valley Trail.
