  • Small and quiet Herefordshire site 10 minutes’ drive from Symonds Yat
  • The Forest of Dean, Puzzlewood and Go Ape all 20 minutes’ drive
  • Lots of green space for kids to play; dog walks direct from the site
Set in the Wye Valley close to Symonds Yat and Ross-on-Wye, Elmsdale Camping is a welcoming and peaceful site that's well-maintained and family-run. If you’re looking for active Herefordshire holidays with the kids, this is a top pick with its neatly mown camping meadow sitting on the banks of Garron Brook. Once installed on site, adventurous kids will probably gravitate to the rope swing across a shallow part of the brook, and there’s plenty of space for them to kick a ball around too. Elmsdale is a dog-friendly site (just watch your canine chums around the hens), and you can exercise your pets along the bridle path leading from the camping field to Marstow and Goodrich villages. Facilities include modern showers, washing-up facilities, fridges and a freezer for ice packs. Open fires and firepits are not allowed, but you can hire chimeneas (and buy wood) or bring your own chimeneas or woodburning stoves and wood supply. Charcoal and gas barbecues are also welcome, as long as they're kept off the ground. Fresh eggs are available most days, and if you’re not a fan of outdoor catering, you have a choice of pubs you can walk to and cafés within a two-minute drive. The site operates a quiet policy, and guests are asked to be back at their pitches by 10pm so fellow campers can sleep. You're welcome to buy, borrow or swap books from the mini-library in the old-fashioned red phone box on site. It's also possible to buy homegrown plants on site, with any money raised from their sale going to charity.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Beautiful site
Very friendly welcome, very friendly & helpful owners
A brook runs around the site with stepped access, amazing for cooling down in the heat!
Lots of nature flying over, buzzards, swallows, lovely to see
Nice big pitch, was quite busy but never felt too close to neighbours
Absolute sun trap in the late afternoon/evening!
Clean facilities

Disliked Fair bit of road noise, no fault of the owners but worth noting. Didn't bother me but might affect some people.
Biggest issue for me was there was absolutely no phone signal - again not the owner's fault, but just be aware if that's important to you. Some networks seemed fine but mine was not. I went up the hill to the church (1km) just to check in with the wife back home as I was on a solo multi day trip.
Hard standing isn't quite level, bring levelling blocks
Showers only lasted 5 seconds per push which got a bit annoying but not a big issue, temperature and pressure was lovely
Bring bug spray! From 6.30/7 there were a lot of bugs landing on my legs.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Lovely site, wonderfully friendly owners, well kept, a short drive from Symmonds Yat and a 25ish minute walk from the Cross Keys. Loved that there was a fridge and freezer, and visits from the chickens!

Liked Flat shady pitch as requested. Clean facilities with friendly and accommodating owners. Enjoyed a paddle in the brook to cool down as we were there in very hot weather! Easy to find fromA40 and convenient for local attractions. Will use again.

Powered grass campsite

Liked Nice clean site, everyone was respecting site rules and it was really relaxing, owners very relaxed and welcoming. We have young children so leaving the space in the middle for them to burn off some energy was nice as not every camp site does that, so felt like owners want you to have a nice time rather then get as much money as possible with pitches all over. Had a good stay overall!

Disliked Cob webs and spiders in the washrooms, not a massive fan of spiders. Showers done stay on along enough and have to keep pressing it in kind of annoying. Birds nest in washing up/fridge freezer hut, understandable that it hasn’t been moved but the amount of bird poo on the floor in there was off putting where your food is kept wasn’t nice. Maybe abit of wifi for the site would be good (there may had been some but we wasn’t told) as we had absolutely no signal for 3 network and with ill parents just a little bit of something would have helped us personally.

1 bedroom cottage / chalet / bungalow

Liked We stayed in the chalet for a few nights. The space was very clean and comfortable. There is a beautiful private garden overlooking the field, which made it special. The field is great with nice thick grass and the creek with a rope swing was perfect for cooling down in the heat. The free range hens were very friendly and entertaining. We bought a plant from the little stand, to take home.

Local attractions

From the site, it’s half an hour’s walk to the village of Goodrich and its photogenic Norman castle; you can take an audio-guided tour around the impressive ruins, and there are family trails to follow too. Then it’s probably time for a snack and a pint in one of the village’s thatched pubs. Active families can get into their stride on waymarked walks around the Wye Valley National Landscape, and climb up to the viewpoint atop Symonds Yat Rock (10 minutes' drive) for spectacular views of the meandering Wye. The river is a hub for outdoor adventures, from paddleboarding on the river to scaling the rocks lining its banks. The Forest of Dean is also a good bet for a day out. Everybody will be enchanted by the moss-strewn ancient woodland in Puzzlewood, and you can follow the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail to colourful stained-glass installations hidden among the trees. For more strenuous jaunts, Go Ape at Beechenhurst has treetop rope courses and zipwires. All are about 20 minutes' drive away.
