  • Dog-friendly site with access to Forest of Dean walks and cycle paths
  • A 20-minute drive from the Wye Valley National Landscape
  • Firepits for hire; small shop selling the basics, logs and kindling
Family-friendly pitches in Gloucestershire’s untamed Forest of Dean – it doesn’t get much better than that. Except it does… because at Forest of Dean Camping, guests can join miles of purpose-built cycling and hiking tracks straight from the pitches. Whether you’re after a quick walk with the dog – your four-legged companions are very welcome here – a pub crawl in local villages or a whole-day biking adventure, they’re all close by. After a day in the forest, head back to your pitch for an evening around the embers. No need to lug everything from home, as there are firepits for hire on a per-night basis, and logs and kindling are sold on the premises. The site also has a small shop selling the basics and alcohol (open 9am until 6pm at reception), so you’ll never get caught short without supplies – and if you want to pick up some eggs for breakfast, spuds or meat for the barbecue, there’s a local shop just 15 minutes’ stroll away. On a practical level, spotless amenities on site include a heated shower block with separate disabled facilities and a laundry room for taking care of chores. If you’re travelling by pedal power, there’s a secure bike room, and there’s a noticeboard at reception with local tourist information if you’re needing a bit of sightseeing inspiration.

Liked: I liked Everything!

I really want to give a bad review so no one goes there and this little gem stays as beautiful and peaceful as it is!

Jess was amazing from start to finish and made us all feel like nothing was too much.

The site itself is really lovely, great size pitches, clean and tidy.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: An outstanding campsite! I have been camping since childhood and this is the cleanest most nicely appointed 'site I have ever stayed at; Jess, the owner was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about local attractions, nothing was too much trouble. The views were superb too and it was lovely and quiet with lots of birdsong and woodland walks.

Disliked: Nothing to report...

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Really clean and welcoming site. Great walks nearby. Really liked the disposal of grey waste and elsan point all compact in one area.

Disliked: I found it a little remote for me. Though you can book a local bus but you need to do it a couple of days in advance

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: In all the PitchUp campsites we have been guests at, none of them top Forest Dean Camping. On arrival we were greeted at reception by Jess, who is friendly, welcoming, helpful with any questions & requirements needed. The site itself is beautiful. We travelled on a motorcycle so we only booked the tent pitch, which was huge. Everything we needed was very near to our pitch. We paid £12.00 for a campfire which was lovely to sit next too in the evening. Everything we needed was provided for the campfire, including a sheet to protect the grass & plenty of wood. Toilet facilities were very clean & well looked after. We didn't leave the campsite as we only booked the one night, but we will be returning for a longer stay. There was nothing about this site that disappointed us at all. Highly recommended.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Beautiful location, a very quiet site with stunning views. Jess is so friendly and helpful with lots of knowledge about the local area. The pitches are huge and very well kept, all have views across the Forest.
The facilities are extremely clean and have enough showers/toilets for the size of the site. The small shop has plenty of basics at a reasonable price.
You can walk into the village (15 mins) which has a pub and small shop. We walked to the steam railway but that does involve some steep hills.
We loved our stay and will definitely be back.

Local attractions

Sporty souls can get out into the breathtaking Wye Valley National Landscape (20 minutes’ drive) for days of canoeing, paddleboarding or cycling along the River Wye. There’s also challenging climbing at Symonds Yat (half an hour), while gorge climbing or abseiling are on hand for adrenaline junkies. More sedate local pursuits include a steam-train ride aboard the Dean Forest Railway (10 minutes), which also offers lots of family-friendly attractions like murder mystery evenings. For outdoor fun in enchanting, moss-covered forest, the walking routes at Puzzlewood (also 10 minutes) are suitable for kids, and you can all learn about local history in the reconstructed cottages and museum at the Dean Heritage Centre (15 minutes). The spectacular remains of Cistercian Tintern Abbey (half an hour) have a gorgeous setting by the River Wye. Goodrich Castle (25 minutes) is another stunning spot where you can clamber up Norman-era towers, brave the dungeons and see relics of exquisite stained-glass windows in its half-ruined chapel.
