Picnic tables to the rear of the pub

General

  • In the grounds of a country pub in the village of Alvington
  • Easy access just off the A48 main road
  • A 10-minute drive from the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley

Aiming to do lots of out-and-abouting? Fancy finishing your days with easy access to pints and a tasty dinner that you didn’t have to cook? Bag a berth at The Blacksmiths Arms in the little Gloucestershire village of Alvington and it’s all yours.

Country pursuits are plentiful in the surrounding area: canoeing, scuba diving training, horse riding, fishing, golf and mountain bike trails are all within a half-hour drive, and the site is well placed for walks on the Offa’s Dyke Path or in the Forest of Dean. Getting out to all of the above (and attractions including Tintern Abbey, Chepstow Castle and Clearwell Caves) is a cinch as the Arms is handily located just off the A48.

And should your fave country pursuit involve a pint of ale by the fire, a game of darts and a plate of pub grub? That’s all sorted too, as the site happens to be attached to a friendly country inn that’s got all of the above, including a menu that turns local produce into a wide range of different dishes.

All the basics are in place too – there’s a free wifi connection in the pub and clean, tidy toilet and shower facilities out by the pitches.

Lovey pub with fantastic food. Nice friendly owner. Good campsite with nice sized pitches. Shower block was always clean. You could get wifi outside the pub, which wasn't too far from pitches. Quiet location.

    Disliked:

The shower cubicles were really small, making it a struggle to get dressed. Only one shower for men and one shower for women. If you are disabled this would be problem.

Lovely small site with facilities and pub with nice home cooked food. People and service were good. Despite being near a main road the site was quiet. Easy reach of other towns nearby and access to Forest of Dean tourist attractions.

    Disliked:

Quite a tight entry to/from site for a caravan. Paid for hardstanding pitch but offered a grass one when we got there. His did not put us off though (actually preferred the grass one) and we would return.

David was a fabulous host from start to finish. He made us feel very welcome on his campsite and in his lovely pub. He went above and beyond to cater for our needs during our stay. The campsite was a perfect size, had beautiful surroundings and was very peaceful. Facilities on the campsite were perfect. The shower was absolutely beautiful in the mens room, just the right amount of pressure and when you have been on that River Wye all afternoon it is exactly what you need to freshen you up. We also spent a night in the pub, during that night they only had one chef in the kitchen which caused a few delays and slight issues with meals. But I have to say that all the staff in the pub got it sorted in no time and kindly gave me and my friends a drink on the house for the inconvenience. Can I just say that all staff in the Blacksmiths Arms are very friendly and lovely to speak to and will do anything to help you out. We had a fabulous weekend on David's site and will certainly be returning again and recommended to friends. David once again thankyou for being so kind and helpful during our stay.

Local attractions

Active times await… if you’re up for a stroll or few, take your boots over to the Offa’s Dyke Path (10 minutes’ drive) for views over both England and Wales at the same time, or the Forest of Dean (10 minutes) for walks on waymarked woodland trails.

More? Saddle up for horseback hacks from a riding centre 20 minutes away, swing your clubs at Lydney Golf Club (10 minutes) or take a mountain bike to the trails in Coleford (20 minutes). If you’re up for a bit of water-based action, set forth for canoe trips from Symonds Yat (half an hour) or suit up for scuba dive training at the National Diving & Activity Centre (five minutes).

You’re allowed to take it easy though if you prefer… perhaps with a trip to Tintern Abbey’s gorgeous Gothic ruins (20 minutes), a subterranean tour of Clearwell Caves (15 minutes) or a canter around Chepstow Castle (10 minutes), keeping an eye out for Europe’s oldest castle doors as you go. Run out of puff? Get some steam power and Severn views with a four-mile ride on the Dean Forest Railway (10 minutes).
