The Blacksmiths Arms: Picnic tables to the rear of the pub

General

  • In the grounds of a country pub in the village of Alvington
  • Easy access just off the A48 main road
  • A 10-minute drive from the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley

Aiming to do lots of out-and-abouting? Fancy finishing your days with easy access to pints and a tasty dinner that you didn’t have to cook? Bag a berth at The Blacksmiths Arms in the little Gloucestershire village of Alvington and it’s all yours.

Country pursuits are plentiful in the surrounding area: canoeing, scuba diving training, horse riding, fishing, golf and mountain bike trails are all within a half-hour drive, and the site is well placed for walks on the Offa’s Dyke Path or in the Forest of Dean. Getting out to all of the above (and attractions including Tintern Abbey, Chepstow Castle and Clearwell Caves) is a cinch as the Arms is handily located just off the A48.

And should your fave country pursuit involve a pint of ale by the fire, a game of darts and a plate of pub grub? That’s all sorted too, as the site happens to be attached to a friendly country inn that’s got all of the above, including a menu that turns local produce into a wide range of different dishes.

All the basics are in place too – there’s a free wifi connection in the pub and clean, tidy toilet and shower facilities out by the pitches.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The pub is open Friday to Sunday 12pm - 3pm and 6.30pm - 11pm, Monday 7.30pm - 11pm and Tuesday to Thursday 6.30pm - 11pm.

We had 2 nights staying here with friends in their own MH & caravan, we had gravel pitch, slightly unlevel but nothing of a problem, toilets/showers, basic but manageable.
We had a meal which in my opinion was average & a drink in the pub on the Saturday evening, good atmosphere in the pub, very friendly staff & owner & obviously a popular place as it was quite full. For the cost of the pitch it was fine for 2 nights, it is what it is, the car park of a pub, if you want all the facilities of a camp site & the cost then book a camp site, if you just want somewhere cheap to set up for a night or 2 this will do the job.
There’s also a small park there for the children.

    Disliked:

We were towing a small car behind motorhome so we found the entrance from the main rd difficult to drive into, not much of a problem though, we drove a bit further & turned & approached from other side of the Rd.

Great little site. Adults only. Stayed here twice before over the years. You are literally pitched in the rear beer garden of the Blacksmiths Arms. There is a second pub just over the road called the Globe (which is slightly more expressive). Site does come with a small shower block and toilets. Lydney is 5 mins drive to the East and Chepstow is 10 mins to the West. Landlord welcoming as always.

Owner very welcoming and friendly. Pub was lovely and food was amazing!! Site not to big so not over crowded.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike as such but there is only 1 toilet & 1 shower in the men’s and 1 shower & 2 toilets in the ladies. They are very basic and shower was a little mouldy but they worked as they should and the shower was warm!

Local attractions

Active times await… if you’re up for a stroll or few, take your boots over to the Offa’s Dyke Path (10 minutes’ drive) for views over both England and Wales at the same time, or the Forest of Dean (10 minutes) for walks on waymarked woodland trails.

More? Saddle up for horseback hacks from a riding centre 20 minutes away, swing your clubs at Lydney Golf Club (10 minutes) or take a mountain bike to the trails in Coleford (20 minutes). If you’re up for a bit of water-based action, set forth for canoe trips from Symonds Yat (half an hour) or suit up for scuba dive training at the National Diving & Activity Centre (five minutes).

You’re allowed to take it easy though if you prefer… perhaps with a trip to Tintern Abbey’s gorgeous Gothic ruins (20 minutes), a subterranean tour of Clearwell Caves (15 minutes) or a canter around Chepstow Castle (10 minutes), keeping an eye out for Europe’s oldest castle doors as you go. Run out of puff? Get some steam power and Severn views with a four-mile ride on the Dean Forest Railway (10 minutes).
