  • Family-friendly Gloucestershire campsite overlooking the Wye Valley
  • Five minutes’ drive to Symonds Yat; Go Ape Beechenhurst 15 minutes
  • Forest of Dean walks from the site; shops and pubs five minutes’ drive
Wonderfully spacious, peaceful and encircled by trees, Bracelands Campsite is on the edge of the Forest of Dean near Coleford in Gloucestershire. Firmly in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it’s also close to the border with Wales for family adventures across two countries. Settle in and you’ll soon be in the mood to appreciate all the natural gorgeousness that surrounds this site – look out across the fields and you’ll see you're surrounded by oak, copper beech and pine woodlands. On clear days, watch the sun set over the trees, and wake again in the morning to see light stream through them at daybreak. With all this space around, kids can play and explore their surroundings to their heart’s content. And that goes for all guests, in fact – all you need to do is walk to the edge of the site and you’re in the Forest of Dean, with all its miles of walking and cycling tracks. A few practical bits and pieces: dogs are welcome to come along on your Forest of Dean getaway (although you'll need to keep them on leads on site please), and family-friendly facilities include a laundry room, hot showers and washing-up areas. If you run out of supplies, whizz into Coleford (10 minutes’ drive), which has a couple of mid-size supermarkets, as well as a load of takeaways, pubs and restaurants.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked The only thing I liked about this place was the location and that you could easily just wonder off into the woods on the various trails.

Disliked Here’s a clear, firm, and well-structured version of your review that keeps it factual while clearly explaining the impact on you. I’ve tightened the language, corrected spelling, and made sure your main issues come through strongly without sounding emotional or aggressive:

Upon arrival, we were told that we were not allowed to burn wood. As we were staying in a rooftop tent, sitting by a fire in the evening was the only way to keep warm, so this was frustrating straight away. Nowhere on the pitch-up booking page (which I booked through) does it state that burning wood is not permitted. I emailed while we were there to raise this issue and received a repetitive “sorry for the inconvenience,” which felt dismissive given the circumstances and no gesture of goodwill.

Secondly, there was only one toilet block open, and the toilets and showers are closed for a full two hours starting at 10:30am. While inconvenient, this is not my main concern. The bigger issue is that guests are actively encouraged and told to use the family room and disabled toilets during this closure.

As a result, disabled facilities were frequently unavailable to those who actually need them. Both of us have hidden disabilities, and we were unable to use the disabled toilets because they were being used as shower facilities by guests without disabilities. This was upsetting and unacceptable, as it removes access to facilities specifically designed for disabled guests.

Overall, better communication before booking and more consideration for accessibility and disabled guests are urgently needed.

From the manager: Good morning Jade,

Thank you for your "well-structured" review, however on the Pitch Up booking page, under Site Features, Rules, it clearly lists campfires are not permitted. However, as explained on arrival, you could of enjoyed the effect of a campfire as long as you only burnt specialised eco logs, or charcoal, which, unlike real wood do not give off the dangerous embers, and the onsite shop stocks both for you to purchase.

You are correct that only one of the three toilet blocks was open at the time of your visit. Given the low occupancy and the closure of the other areas for ground recovery, the large block provided more than sufficient facilities for everyone on site.

This block is closed for just two hours each day to allow staff to carry out a thorough clean for the benefit of all guests, and clear signage is in place to advise guests of the cleaning schedule. We're sorry you felt you could not use them at any other time, but we are obligated to maintain access to the adapted family bathrooms for all to use during this short period. Outside of the daily clean, any guest with a radar key, with or without disabilities, or families are welcome to use these facilities without prejudice.

In response to requesting overall better communication, you state you "emailed" the site whilst you were there, however I'm sure if you had of just popped into the office, or spoken to a team member during their rounds, they would of given you a much more personable answers to your feedback.

It's disappointing you have chosen not to visit us again or recommend us to friends, however we respect your opinion and always welcome genuine feedback.

Kind Regards
Central Operations

Liked Fantastic reception service on arrival, our pitch was very level and large enough for our van and the drainage looked very good. Toilet block was very clean and checked regularly, the showers again clean and water a really good temperature and a decent amount of water came out before shutting off. All the staff we met were very friendly. The elsn point was very well thought out and certainly better than some we have come across.

Disliked We didn't dislike anything, some pitches looked quite slopped so that is a point bearing in mind, but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Route directions

The route via Symonds Yat Rock over Huntsham Bridge B4432 has a 1:5 gradient incline. It's a very narrow road, unsuitable for large RVs and motorhomes, and difficult for those towing caravans. Vehicles over seven and a half tonnes are prohibited. Instead, from the A40, take the exit for Forest of Dean and Coleford A4136 (Staunton Road). Continue for five miles, then turn left onto Grove Road. After half a mile, turn left onto Bracelands Drive. The campsite is at the end on the right.

Local attractions

There’s simply masses to do in the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley – from adventurous outings to cultural visits. Get the kids up and active with a visit to Go Ape Beechenhurst (15 minutes’ drive) for Segway tours and zooming down zipwires, and head for the Forest of Dean Adventure Park Bracelands Site (five minutes) for jumping around on ropes, climbing towers and practising archery. Or maybe you fancy kayaking down the River Wye from Wyedean (15 minutes)? For less strenuous days out, have an amble around the mossy woodland trails at Puzzlewood (10 minutes), or get your culture fix at National Trust-owned Westbury Court Garden (25 minutes), with delightful formal plantings around an ornamental lake. Lunchtime? Pack a picnic and eat it at Symonds Yat Rock (five minutes) while enjoying the view of the River Wye winding through its gorge. Prefer a pub? The renowned half-timbered Saracens Head Inn (15 minutes) sits on the river bank and is a great place to stop for lunch or a glass of something chilled. And to say you’ve been to Wales, hop across the border to Monmouth (20 minutes) and tour its castle and military museum.
