Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Super friendly & helpful staff Beautiful site and well maintained Clean facilities, well marked out on map and signs and clear what is waste water and drinking water Very close access to woodland walks and attractions Wild deer roam the site Plenty of choice of pitch as we stayed off peak which also meant it was a bit quieter and that suited us perfectly Easy to find and we loved the location, will definitely be coming back!

Disliked: Might be because we were there off peak but the offer in both campsite shop and the larger shop at the top of the site was not the greatest. We travel light and have limited space for cooling food and after spending most of the day walking around the woodland we didn’t want to have to take the van and leave the site to source dinner. As an emergency options we found some bits but felt a bit limited. As a site it is absolutely stunning and we didn’t struggle to find a space to pitch (again as we were there off peak) but it is very slopey and as beginner campers that have only just started our micro camper adventures we have only experienced flat campsites Bring some bits to level your vehicle or keep in mind for sleeping in tents. We will be putting levellers on the list of items needed for next time :) Wish there was a shelf in the showers but everything was clean and nice so not really a complaint!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Friendly staff, block 3 was closed off but staff let me pitch there as I wanted some privacy.

Disliked: Could have made it clear during booking that block 3 was closed off as that consists of 50-60% of grass only pitches.

Route directions

The route via Symonds Yat Rock over Huntsham Bridge B4432 has a 1:5 gradient incline. It's a very narrow road, unsuitable for large RVs and motorhomes, and difficult for those towing caravans. Vehicles over seven and a half tonnes are prohibited. Instead, from the A40, take the exit for Forest of Dean and Coleford A4136 (Staunton Road). Continue for five miles, then turn left onto Grove Road. After half a mile, turn left onto Bracelands Drive. The campsite is at the end on the right.

Local attractions

There’s simply masses to do in the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley – from adventurous outings to cultural visits. Get the kids up and active with a visit to Go Ape Beechenhurst (15 minutes’ drive) for Segway tours and zooming down zipwires, and head for the Forest of Dean Adventure Park Bracelands Site (five minutes) for jumping around on ropes, climbing towers and practising archery. Or maybe you fancy kayaking down the River Wye from Wyedean (15 minutes)? For less strenuous days out, have an amble around the mossy woodland trails at Puzzlewood (10 minutes), or get your culture fix at National Trust-owned Westbury Court Garden (25 minutes), with delightful formal plantings around an ornamental lake. Lunchtime? Pack a picnic and eat it at Symonds Yat Rock (five minutes) while enjoying the view of the River Wye winding through its gorge. Prefer a pub? The renowned half-timbered Saracens Head Inn (15 minutes) sits on the river bank and is a great place to stop for lunch or a glass of something chilled. And to say you’ve been to Wales, hop across the border to Monmouth (20 minutes) and tour its castle and military museum.
