  • Spacious family-owned site in the Cotswolds
  • Five minutes' drive from Cirencester and 25 from Cheltenham
  • A 15-minute drive from Bibury and the start of the Thames Path
A getaway full of fab scenery, peaceful wanders and historical streetscapes… and bringing the dog along for the journey? It’s a cinch at Mayfield Park, a family-friendly and family-owned Gloucestershire site five minutes’ drive from the market town of Cirencester and the pretty village of Bibury. This is a top spot to use as a base for explores of the spectacular Cotswolds. Overlooking the Churn valley, the site has easy access to plenty of local walks and scenic villages – just ask in reception for recommendations – and the long-distance Thames Path (so long it’ll take ramblers all the way to London) starts about 15 minutes’ drive away for lengthy treks. Exploring without needing to use feet or pedals is simple round here too: the bus route for Cirencester and Cheltenham passes the site and there’s a stop about 100 feet from the entrance; otherwise pile everyone into the car for the five-minute ride to Cirencester or the 25-minute canter to Cheltenham. Be sure to head back to the site in time to catch the sun setting over the fields, then settle in for an evening of barbecues as canine pals stretch out in the grass. Want a break from cooking? Sniff out one of the local pubs serving local eats to get a taste of Gloucestershire.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Stayed for 3 nights on a fully serviced touring pitch. Liked how each pitch was separated by hedges. Good size pitch. Great enclosed area at the top to let the dog off the lead. Kids enjoyed the football pitch. Great views from the top of the field. Shower/toilets were good. Helpful child friendly toilet seats for younger children and separate sink/mirror cubicle to get changed etc. Check in was easy and a helpful friendly lady provided the info of where we needed to go etc. We all enjoyed our stay here.

Disliked: Tight entrance and very uphill. The one way system isn’t sign posted clear enough and we got told off for going the wrong way round when we arrived!

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Good sized site in a very central location. Only 5 mins to Cirencester. Helpful staff with lots of tips on where to go and what to do. Heated toilet and shower block, nice and warm. Buy everything you need before arriving on site as no shop but there is a Spa 2 mins drive away which closes at night.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Good sized flat pitch with hedges for privacy and water tap, electricity and grey water disposal. Clean toilets , showers etc. Bus stop outside to either Cirencester ( 10 mins bus) and Cheltenham ( 40 mins bus). Quiet and peaceful ( obviously noise from the main road, but it didn’t bother us at all)

Disliked: Only one small block of toilets and showers which was a bit of a trek ( on a sloping pathway) to and fro which was a bit of a nuisance to us as older campers. If the site had been more busy the small number of showers might have been a problem.
Some of the pathways/drives were uneven and very stony and dusty especially if a van was driving by more than 5 mph speed limit which vehicles were not always adhering to.
Apparently there is no WiFi away from reception so if that’s essential for you this is not a site for you.

Local attractions

With Cheltenham racecourse a mere 30 minutes’ drive away, this site is a prime pick for horsey types – but if the gee-gees don’t have the family galloping for joy, there are other four-legged, fleet and feathered options at the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens, also half an hour from base. If the Cotswold Gardens grow enthusiasm for stately houses and grand designs, there’s plenty else hereabouts to entice: Chavenage House, Berkeley Castle, Bowood House, Sudeley Castle, Newark Park and Dyrham Park are all within an hour for old piles, and Westonbirt Arboretum and the gardens at Highgrove (Charlie and Camilla’s royal digs) are definitely worth a turn half an hour away. For more urban explores, start 15 minutes from the site in the scenic village of Bibury to have a poke around the Chedworth Roman Villa, travel on to Bourton-on-the-Water (20 minutes) for Birdland, a maze, a motoring museum and a model village, then take things up a notch in Cirencester, where there are Roman remains, museums, markets, parks and a manor house all waiting for visitors. Keep things soothingly low-key with a spin on the Swindon and Cricklade steam railway, 25 minutes away, or get a bit more active with watersports, paintball, fishing and horse riding at Cotswold Water Park or an adrenaline-fuelled day at the Gloucestershire Rally School, both within 20 minutes.
