  • Well-maintained pub site for guests 14 years and over
  • In Stanton by Dale; 20 minutes' drive from Attenborough Nature Centre
  • Real ale and pub food served; 20 minutes' walk from a golf club
Dart off to Derbyshire and make for Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite in Stanton by Dale, a well-kept site attached to an award-winning pub. The name of this spot is a nod to Stanton's industrial heritage – if the village rings a bell, it may well be because 'Stanton' crops up on many a manhole cover across the UK. Nowadays, things are peaceful around here, and the site is set between traditional red brick houses and a small village green. The Chequers Inn is over 200 years old and still in fine fettle – its selling point remains its focus on real ales and proper home-cooked food. The pub, like the site, is mightily dog-friendly, so don't hesitate to bring four-legged friends along on your trip. The pitches here are level, well-drained and conveniently located to the rear of the pub. Although it's close to the M1, off-site strolls are unlikely to involve busy roads and traffic – Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite is a few minutes' walk from footpaths that'll take you through the pleasant fields and hills that make up the local landscape. The nearest supermarket can be found in Sandiacre (five minutes' drive); Ilkeston (10 minutes) has a wider range of shops and takeaways. Please note that kids under the age of 14 aren't allowed to stay at Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite.

Liked Really quiet, clean, well maintained site at the back of a pub. Only 10 minutes from the M1. Lovely food in the pub (pre-order). Very warm and friendly welcome by Sue and Ian. Great site for a stop over.

Disliked No showers on site but not a problem (very clean toilets open 24 hrs).

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked A lovely site in a quiet rural area / village. Ideal locaion, as only around 6 miles from Nottingham city. Pitches are large and even on gravel with a bench table and parasol on a grassed area. Site is big enough for 5 or 6 Motorhomes.
There is the lovely bird of prey on the site too, that i had a chat with. The Chequers Inn pub is right beside the motorhome pitches.
It is a quiet area (but see below) in a nice hamlet/village.
I also feel safe at this site in person and of caravan/vehicle being left for the day.
It is handy to be able to get pub food too although i did not order any food. Food i gather needs to be ordered at least 24h in advance but not sure if that includes things like sandwhiches/ploughman's type lunch.
Overall i do recommend and i would go back and stay here again.
The owner lady i met last time is lovely and helpful, and due to arriving around 5pm, i already knew the site, so i parked up easilywithout having to contact reception.

Disliked The site boundary of a high hedge on one side, backs onto people's private gardens. At times it is irritating as one of their dogs start to bark, off join all the other dogs. Admittedly the 'owners' of the dogs did intervene but it would be better imho if the dogs were trained not to bark at someone driving their vehicle along the back of one of the gardens, and other minor normal behaviour.
Having said that, a couple of years ago when i stayed here, it was one of the motorhome visitors that were more of a problem than the dogs, as they decided it was okay to put their music up loud whilst sitting in their motorhome.
Firstly, that kind of ignorance of motorhome/campervan camping, to think everyone wants to hear their noise is the height of disregard to other campers, the business owners AND the home owners - over the boundary fence. As an added extra, i thought to share my music with them too....that seemed to prompt them into turning their music off.

This year though every camper there was curteous and quiet.

It would be great if a small shower block/clothes washing machine was available. I'd be more prone to staying a bit longer. Although there is access to toilets all day and night re the pub toilets.

Liked Great pitches. Very clean and tidy and level. Super quiet as I was only one staying.
Staff at pub are all friendly although I didn’t eat so can’t comment on food.

Disliked Bit pricey at £30 with no shower or washing up facilities. You do have use of toilets in pub so ok for a quick stop over

Local attractions

Do a round of the greens at Erewash Valley Golf Club (20 minutes' walk), a well-kept local club with fab tree-lined fairways that's easily accessible on foot. Other outdoor pursuits around here include fishing, with the nearest angling spot about five minutes' drive away, and birdwatching – Attenborough Nature Centre (20 minutes) may be named after the nearby village rather than the TV presenter, but it's still a prime pick for a spot of ornithology. Nottingham city centre (20 minutes) is next up, for a castle, shopping centres and the interactive National Justice Museum. (Rather not drive around town? Pull up to one of the city's park and rides and take the tram instead.) On the outskirts of Nottingham is Wollaton Hall (20 minutes), an Elizabethan country house with a deer park and formal gardens. (Remember Batman's mansion in The Dark Knight Rises? Yep, that was filmed here.) Heading towards the Peak District National Park (from 45 minutes) is also on the cards, whether you opt for Derbyshire dalliances in the grounds of Chatsworth House (an hour) or old-time amusements and riverside walks in Matlock Bath (45 minutes).
