  • Wild camping experience in the southern Peak District
  • Bakewell 10 minutes' drive; 20 minutes to Buxton
  • A mile from an award-winning pub; views over Lathkill Dale
If a laidback wild camping break is just what you need right now, Lathkill Wild Campsite is likely to tick a lot of boxes. A peaceful Peak District location? Tick. Views over hills? Tick. Dog-friendly and relaxing? Tick, again. Many guests return again and again for this site's friendly and welcoming atmosphere, as well as the convenient location. On the edge of the village of Over Haddon, it’s only a 10-minute car journey to get to Bakewell, one of the top visitor spots in the Peak District National Park. Peaceful, wild-style camping is the vibe here, and that carries over into the facilities. A toilet (with no toilet paper), fresh water, firepits for hire and firewood for sale make staying here an experience that's both convenient and hands-on. Overlooking Lathkill Dale and with far-reaching views over the surrounding area, many circular walks and bike routes await close by. And on the food front, the site is about a mile from an award-winning pub, which is easy to walk to, and the village also has tea rooms, public toilets and a bus stop serving local destinations. For anything a bit bigger in scale (like supermarkets, A road access and museums), you'll want to head in the direction of Bakewell (10 minutes); the similarly sized spa town of Buxton (20 minutes) has a heritage trail, spas and shops.

What customers say

Popular "wild" campsite with scenic views & relaxed vibe. Guests love the friendly owners, choose-your-own-pitch, & fire pits. Basic but clean facilities. Great for walks, near pubs & Bakewell. Some uneven ground/noise, but great value; many return.

Liked Camping just how it should be!

If you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle and experience true peace and quiet, Lathkill Wild Campsite delivers on every front. This site offers a wonderfully authentic, off-grid feel without sacrificing essential comforts.

While the site is remote, it was remarkably easy to find using the precise pin drop provided in the booking confirmation email. Upon arrival, we were free to choose our own spot across a few different fields. Even though the campsite was quite busy, the layout is so expansive that everyone had an incredible amount of space with plenty of distance between pitches.

Being completely surrounded by rolling fields and hills made sitting outside the tent an absolute joy. The atmosphere was pure heaven: completely free from light and noise pollution, and filled with respectful fellow campers. (Bonus points to the vigilant farm owner, who swiftly stepped in when a group lit a campfire!)

The facilities are well-maintained and practical. There are three individual, very clean flushing toilet cubicles complete with sinks, plus a men's urinal. Just remember to bring your own toilet rolls and hand soap. Drinking water taps and huge rubbish bins are also conveniently located on-site.

Its location is a fantastic base for exploring. We took a short trip a couple of miles away to Magpie Mine, a fascinating and remarkably well-preserved disused lead mine. We also explored the nearby charming town of Bakewell, with it's amazing old church high on the hill and a great walk along the river with it's many geese and swans which was simply beautiful.

Unfortunately, we were only there for one night, but we would definitely go again. Whether you want to hike local history or simply sit back and soak in the breathtaking views, Lathkill Wild Campsite is a phenomenal choice. Highly recommended!

Disliked If we had to pick one downside, most pitches sit on a slope, meaning you need to be mindful of where and how you pitch your tent. However, this is quite typical for traditional farm campsites so was nothing unexpected.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Simple but comfortable camp site. A basic toilet, running water and fabulous views. Plenty of space for everyone and walks nearby are a must. My 1 and 4year old loved their time here. Lathkill dale walk is a must.

Disliked Nothing to dislike a perfect wild camp site But if your not happy with a field and a toilet to sit on in a shed with no electric and clear open sky's a wild camp is not for you. Also rules are rules to keep everyone safe especially In the very dry conditions.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked It is a wonderful campsite. Lovely views and quiet. Nice friendly owner. Good prices.
Outside washing up facilities were a bonus and the loos were fine. I would definitely come back here.

Disliked It was a shame that some other campers pitched up in their bell tent and proceeded to erect a large screen and watch TV on it!! I'd come here to watch the meteor showers. It is a 'wild' campsite so I'd say if you want to watch tv, choose somewhere else! Two others also had bbqs which was pretty risky in the current drought.

Local attractions

A Peak District break should always include a visit to Chatsworth House (20 minutes’ drive). This country house has over 25 rooms, including a painted hall and sculpture room, and the grounds are just as splendid – here you can take the kids to meet the pygmy goats in the farmyard, and play at the adventure playground, eat according to the season at the estate’s restaurants or take a buggy tour. Haddon Hall (15 minutes) is another nearby historic house, with a medieval park that can be explored on guided tours. And there’s Matlock (20 minutes) close by too – it was once an ancient spa town and now a gateway for bike rides, hikes and the lot. If staying active is high on your priorities, a visit to the Hathersage Swimming Pool (25 minutes) is the place to practise your backstroke under the open sky. You’re bound to get in some steps around Alton Towers (40 minutes) too, running between rides. Dovedale (30 minutes), of course, is a place for more traditional hikes – the valley is almost three miles long, and there are stepping stones to cross on your way around this scenic stretch of land.
