  • Peaceful park near the Peak District
  • Easy access to Derby and Nottingham; two pubs five minutes' walk away
  • New toilet and shower block kept to immaculate standards
What a peaceful park this is for Peak District hols – on 11 acres of quiet woodland near the national park and set deep in the Derbyshire countryside with picnic areas peppered all around. And what a pleasing park this is for those who insist on amenities being immaculate and up to date – the toilet and shower block comes with disabled access, baby changing and showers with hot and cold water, and is kept in tiptop condition at all times by the friendly site team. Riddings Wood Holiday Park is a rural park but with easy access to urban centres like Derby and Nottingham as well as to the hikes, bike rides and canters of the Peak District. (If you're a bit bamboozled as to what to do first, have a look at the tourist info point in reception or ask the team for tips.) Campfires are allowed if you need a bit of warming upon return. And finally, what a pint-friendly site Riddings Wood is too – the only thatched-roof pub in Derbyshire, Moulders Arms (aka The Thack), is a short stroll away; and the Seven Stars, a community pub, is just across the road. Cheers…

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The campsite was lovely and facilities were clean, the staff were welcoming informative and helpful and it was good value for money. There is a good play area for children and plenty of space for the children to run around.

Disliked A couple of grumbles would be that the toilet blocks were very far away from the non electric campsite which isn’t great for anyone with mobility issues, also the waste disposal area was very smelly which could maybe benefit from being a bit more closed in.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Quiet, family friendly park.
It was very easy to find and had everything we wanted.
Shower/toilet facilities were fantastic.
Will definitely be staying again.

Disliked Piece of metal sticking out of the fence cut my leg when walking past. I put some tape on to hold it back and let a staff member know who said he’d fix it tomorrow.

Premium Woodland lodge (hot tub)

Liked The cabin was nice and clean and well presented. We had a lovely time using the cabin as a base for our day trips.

Disliked The play area is located a considerable distance from the cabins and down a steep hill. On the second day of our six-day stay, we informed the staff—twice—that only two of the four burners on the gas hob were working. Despite this, no attempt was made to repair it during our visit. We adapted our cooking to manage, but we had expected at least three, if not all four, burners to be functional.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Site is well presented and clean with lovely surroundings. Staff/wardens very friendly and helpful.

Disliked Pitches are very very close together with not really any room to even sit outside of tent and relax. Evenings seem loud however I think it’s because tents are almost touching each other.
Not the sites fault however people driving around need to slow down as lots of children out & about. Didn’t have the worst time but I won’t be returning.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us we appreciate the feedback.

Sorry you did not feel you could relax whilst with us. We are working on where we pitch the tents and have a few plans to create more space between units unless family and friends want to pitch nearer each other.

Sorry to hear you wont be coming back but wish you well in your new ventures.

Apart from the toilets there was nothing we liked about this site.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Toilets were clean.

Disliked Booked a fully serviced pitch which cost £35 per night. Very disappointed to find a faulty tap which fell apart and soaked me through to the skin. No side grass on the pitch just dirt so everything ended up filthy, only one set of facilities for the whole site which was totally inadequate for the number of people there. Area outside the facilities resembled a building site with rubble underfoot, no decent paths of any kind. Definitely wouldn’t go back for free.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us we appreciate the feedback.

Sorry you were disappointed with your stay.

The tap which fed 2 pitches had been completely unscrewed from the pipe as confirmed by maintenance who managed to put the tap back on for you. We did try to help by drying your clothes for you. The pitch as a result was very wet.

Sorry you feel you wont return in the future, all the best with your new ventures.

Local attractions

To the Peak! The Peak District National Park is but a short drive from Riddings Wood Holiday Park, and has a bit of what you fancy for all ages and inclinations. If you're in the area to hike, there are more Peak District trails than you can shake a (walking) stick at, from the shorter treks of seven or so miles around the upper Dove Valley and Pilsbury Castle, to long-distance paths like the Limestone Way (46 miles), the Derwent Valley Heritage Way (55 miles) or the Peak District parts of the Pennine Way, running for 268 miles from the northern Peak District to just inside the Scottish border. Climbers and cavers also delve into all things Peak: thousands of routes for all abilities are all over the park for climbers, including Burcen Edge for beginners and more hair-raising ascents like Debauchery and Mad Dogs and Englishmen for the severely experienced. If you're of a cavernous disposition, make your way to the village of Castleton and its four show caves, Blue John, the Peak, Treak Cliff and Speedwell Cavern with underground boat trip. Matlock Bath has a cable car to take adventurers to limestone caverns The Heights of Abraham, and Poole's Cavern near Buxton has vast caves to explore before an above-surface walk around Buxton Country Park. Other attractions like Chatsworth House and Gardens and the old Crich Tramway are to hand for the historically-minded, alongside old Peak District villages and market towns for tearooms, restaurants, family pubs and lots of shopping: try Buxton, Ashbourne and Bakewell to start you off. Back at Matlock Bath, let the kids go large at the rides and attractions of theme and play park Gullivers Kingdom for ages two to 13; the 600-acre Matlock Farm Park nearby should keep them busy for a bit too.
