  • Peaceful five-acre farm meadow on the edge of Thornton village
  • Bletchley Park 20 minutes’ drive; Oxford 45 minutes
  • Pet-friendly; a few minutes’ walk from the River Great Ouse
Fancy a break within a splendid rural landscape, down by the riverside? (Right by the River Great Ouse, to be precise.) Then, Riverside Camping might be the site for you. This family-oriented spot on a working farm sits between Buckingham (10 minutes’ drive) and Milton Keynes (15 minutes), on the edge of the village of Thornton, a few minutes’ walk from the gorgeous Ouse Valley Way. With five acres of meadow to pitch up and relax in, it’s also an uncrowded spot. Amenities are simple, but they include basics like access to a hot shower and a flushing toilet (additional portable toilets are brought in for busy weekends). Handily for tourers, the site also has capacity to deal with waste from caravans. Kids and pets are welcome, and there are plenty of areas nearby where dogs can be walked; however, please note that this is a peaceful site: quiet hours apply between 10.30pm and 7.30am, and there should be no noise after midnight. There’s lots in the surrounding area to keep the entire family occupied: there’s Milton Keynes for bowling, indoor skiing or climbing; Hogshaw Farm & Wildlife Park (20 minutes) for animal encounters and experiences; and Silverstone (25 minutes) for speed demons. For food shops, restaurants and a farmers’ market, head into Buckingham, where other attractions include an ancient gaol and a public leisure centre. Pick up any breakfast bits while you’re in town, but no need to purchase any eggs – they get delivered to the site for guests to buy.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked A brilliant place to relax! We spent a few days here and I can wholeheartedly recommend this campsite. The grounds are well-maintained, clean and well-lit at night. The toilet and shower facilities are cleaned regularly, and there’s unlimited hot water. The staff are very friendly and helpful. A big plus for being close to nature, the peace and quiet after the night-time curfew, and the convenient location near the river. We’ll definitely be back!”

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked We had an absolutely wonderful weekend here and couldn’t recommend this campsite more!

The campsite is beautifully maintained, peaceful, and perfect for families. It is very child-friendly and also pet-friendly, which made our stay even more enjoyable. The toilets and shower facilities were spotless and exceptionally clean throughout our visit.

The owner was incredibly kind, welcoming, and always happy to help, making us feel at home from the moment we arrived.

The location is fantastic – you can relax by the river, go for a swim, enjoy a BBQ, and spend quality time surrounded by nature. It’s the perfect place to unwind and create amazing memories with family and friends.

Everything about our stay exceeded our expectations. We will definitely be coming back and highly recommend this campsite to anyone looking for a relaxing, clean, and friendly place to stay. Five stars – an amazing experience!

Liked The space it’s a very big open field

Disliked We were not greeted on arrival or once during our stay. Slightly miss leading tick box selection on pitch up- no “toilet block” but rather 2 toilets built into a portaloo base, no lights or toilets so by 6am the next day they were covered in wee unsure where the near by bar is or farm shop. Won’t be returning

From the manager: May I correct you?
We have 2 flushing toilets and 3 hot showers.
There is someone resident on site. However it does say on our site that it's a pop up farm campsite and we say to show up and pitch up where/when you like before we come round to greet you.
There are lights outside the toilets and they are scrubbed and washed every 2/3 hours during the day. However it only takes 1 person overnight to be irresponsible. Regrettably we cannot sleep outside the toilets all night and clean after each person uses them. It is required that guests show some responsibility for the way they treat our toilets.
I'm sorry you had a bad experience and failed to appreciate the beauty of our riverside spot.
I believe we keep a clean set of toilets and provide a welcoming informal atmosphere where people can pitch up where they want and enjoy a piece of countryside not normally open to the public.

Liked Rural location

Disliked Not quiet - several large groups with big speakers near the access to the river. Like a mini-rave! Which is a shame as would have been nice riverside location.

Liked Brilliant little pop up site.
Basic with couple of toilets, one shower and one washing up sink.
But located next to a beautiful river, friendly guy running the site. Great little get away for a bargain price.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Very friendly welcome. The campsite is accessed through a working farm with goats and some sheep. Facilities are basic but good with flushing toilets and a cold water washing up area. Good 4G signal. There's a nice pub 2 miles up the road.

Disliked The river was a bit stagnant and had a smell due to lack of recent rainfall, but I'm sure it's normally fine. It was only a problem in the immediate area.
