  • Quiet grass pitches on a working farm in the Chiltern Hills
  • A five-minute drive to Whipsnade Zoo; walk out to Dunstable Downs
  • Alpacas and sheep on site; pubs within easy walking distance
Farm sites are fab places to stay for family holidays – and the location of New Green End Farm, in the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty between the villages of Kensworth and Whipsnade, is a particularly excellent one. And why would that be? Well, this Bedfordshire location is just a couple of miles from Whipsnade Zoo, meaning that you can walk there in half an hour or so, or maximise your time among the animals by driving there in five minutes. You can stroll straight out into the Dunstable Downs too, and there are a couple of pubs within walking distance for post-outing meals and drinks. If that's not enough walking yet, spend some time wandering around the farm as well – there are miles of pathway to wander along at this working farm, and lots of animals to spot along the way (including sheep and alpacas). That large open space makes for a mighty peaceful place to stay as well, and the grass pitches have been kept on the simple side to make the most of that rural atmosphere. They’re set well back from the main road and surrounded by woodland and open fields, with access to toilets, showers and a washing-up area, plus recycling facilities to keep the place nice and clean. Barbecues and campfires are permitted for that classic outdoor evening vibe, and dogs are welcome to join you on site here. There are a few village stores and farm shops scattered around the vicinity, but for major supplies your best bet is Dunstable, which is five minutes' drive away and home to a couple of large supermarkets.

Peaceful, spacious site with clean facilities. Owners friendly, helpful. Lovely views, convenient location near pubs/trails. Bell tents a hit! Occasional plane noise from Luton, some signage mix-ups, and rare camper noise noted.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The area was quiet and is right beside a small forest. The pitch offer a good bathroom and showers. The water was warm(just right) and clean. Ian welcomed us with his small cute dog and his golf cart. Overall experience was superb, will definitely come back!

Disliked Most of the ground was uneven but nonetheless it was not really a big deal to us.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Very friendly host with his little dog FlipFlop. Nice flat field to pitch up. Lots of walks and pubs nearby. Quiet.

Disliked Only 3 toilets and 1 shower to accommodate 30 tents. They are clean but over subscribed.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Helen, thanks for the feedback and the lovely comments, we will aim to have more toilets, we do have two showers but maybe we need to signpost these as others have also commented on just one shower but honestly we do have two! :) hope to see you again soon.

Nice, out-of-the-way site that still has easy access to M1

Bell tent

Liked Great location, 5 minutes drive from the Downs. Really helpful staff. Bell tent was fantastic, with electric, logs, fire pit included. Comfortable bed, just make sure you take bedding. 2 chairs provided. Toilet block clean with lovely shower, only one shower but not a problem. Woods next door to walk the dogs in. Just loved it!!

Disliked I wished we had known that electric & logs were included! Bag of logs normally £9 but included in your first night in a bell tent.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks Hayley for your very kind comments. I'll review the listing for the bell tents to make sure its clear about the logs and electric

Local attractions

Whipsnade Zoo (five minutes' drive) is the big draw around here, of course – this offshoot of the Zoological Society of London is home to more than 10,000 animals from around the world, and it’s also got several play areas and a steam railway. To spend more time in the open air, you may like to stroll through the National Trust’s Dunstable Downs estate (25 minutes’ walk), walk through the Whipsnade Tree Cathedral (20 minutes) or pick any one of the scenic trails running through the chalk landscapes of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Golfers may like to get out onto the greens at Dunstable Downs Golf Club (three minutes’ drive) or Whipsnade Park Golf Club (10 minutes). A little further afield, there’s go-karting, indoor snow sports and the National Museum of Computing up in Milton Keynes (half an hour), a castle in Berkhamsted and a steam railway in Buzzard (both 20 minutes). For a special day out, it's a half-hour drive to the Harry Potter Studio Tour.
