  • Family-owned Snowdonia site near the shore of Bala Lake
  • A short walk to watersports, boat hire and Bala Lake Railway
  • Within walking distance of Bala’s shops, restaurants and golf course
Got Snowdonia National Park in your sights? You can add a little sailing or windsurfing – and relaxation on a family-run site – into the mix when staying at Pen Y Bont Touring and Camping Park. This peaceful place is just a few hundred metres from the shore of Bala Lake (also known by its Welsh name Llyn Tegid). The fresh air of the Snowdonia National Park is sure to aid that well-awaited relaxation… and when you’re feeling fully rejuvenated (and full of tasty food from the shops and restaurants in Bala town centre, 15 minutes’ walk away), there are activities like sailing, windsurfing and boat hire around the lake. Switch up Bala Lake’s gentle ripples for the whitewater of the Tryweryn at the National White Water Centre, 10 minutes’ drive away. Adventurous souls can zoom down the 1080-metre zipwire at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes’ drive), climb Snowdonia’s mountains or catch a few swells at the surf lagoon at Adventure Parc Snowdonia (50 minutes). If you’d rather move at a more leisurely pace, putting a few holes as you go, there’s a golf course on the other side of Bala, half an hour’s walk away from the site. Spa days and massage treatments are available about 10 minutes' walk away too.

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site (small, maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Lovely tidy site and friendly helpful staff

Disliked: Packed in too close together. Actually felt claustrophobic! Shower facilities actually not great. Water so hot it could burn you or so tepid you were cold. No control over temperature. Signs of mold and plenty of spiders to keep you company. Expensive for what it was. On a busy main road!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We're glad you enjoyed the site and staff here at Pen Y Bont but understandably we are disappointed by the rest of your review.
Sorry to hear you felt claustrophobic however the pitches do have the standard spacing required for touring pitches and if you were unhappy, maybe you should have come and spoken to us to see if there was an alternative pitch that you were more comfortable on? There is absolutely nothing we can do to resolve a problem after you have left but if we are made aware at the time, we will try our hardest to rectify the issue.
The temperature of the water in the amenity block is set to one temperature (approx. 40C I believe) to avoid scalding and this is to ensure the safety of everyone including young children, so no there is no control of this for guests. Sometimes the showers do run cold if we have a full site and everyone is trying to use them at the same time and this is something we are working on with our plumber to improve and hopefully fix.
Again, did you bring the issues you had with mould and spiders to the attention of the staff while you were staying? The amenity block is cleaned at least 3 times a day and we take great pride in it - with most guests commenting on how it looks brand new. I'm afraid spiders are part and parcel of camping really...the windows are open in the amenity block to allow for ventilation and we can't really stop our eight legged friends coming and going as they please, however we do try and remove and unwanted visitors as well as their webs. 🕷
The site is located off a B-road with a 40mph limit, admittedly it can become busy, especially during peak season but not to the extent that it affects the peace and quiet of the site.
Sorry to hear that you would not recommend us or visit again but we hope any prospective guests looking to stay with us, reading this review, take note and come and talk to us with any issues so that we can try our hardest to make their stay as fantastic as possible!

Liked: The site is immaculate. Amazing.

Disliked: Nothing. Needs possible a cafe

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, very much appreciated. Not sure why you think we need a cafe on site when there are plenty of eating places 10 minutes down the road, but we appreciate your thoughts.

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site (medium)

Liked: Everything about the site, clean, tidy, well laid out and landscapes. Staff are fantastic, willing to sort out problems without hesitation. Low flying area, no need to go to the Mach loop. Steam railway outside the site. Bala town a short stroll away, for food shopping etc.

Disliked: Nothing really, its by the side of a main road but the road noise not too intrusive.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your fabulous review! We're so glad you enjoyed your time with us and we hope to see you again very soon!

Powered grass tent site (medium)

Liked: Lovely facilities, quiet at night, perfect location to Bala Lake, clean

Disliked: Dogs not on leads, luckily we didn't bring our dog however owners should keep dogs on lead at all times. Constant barking of dogs

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review Yasmin - we're glad you enjoyed your stay and the facilities we have to offer here at Pen Y Bont.
I can only apologise for other guests not keeping their dogs on a lead but if it is not brought to our attention at the time, there is little we can do. We always urge people to come and talk to us straight away about any problems and usually they can be rectified easily. Unfortunately, leaving the comments in a review won't resolve anything.
We are a pet friendly site and love welcoming four legged friends to the site but we do expect their owners to respect the site, our rules and fellow campers 🐾
We hope to welcome you back in the future.

Kind Regards,
Team PYB

Local attractions

For those days where you can’t be bothered to walk too far, it’s very handy that the station for the narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway is just five minutes’ walk away. Views of the water are a given, but count the mountains too: Arenig Fawr, Aran Fawddwy and Aran Benllyn are visible on the route. You may have your sights set on climbing Wales’ tallest mountain, perhaps. If you’re not climbing up Snowdon (an hour's drive) yourself, you might want to take the Snowdon Mountain Railway (an hour and five minutes), which has been making its ascent for over 100 years. A less strenuous trail than the Snowdon climb is the Mawddach Trail, which runs for just under 10 miles from Dolgellau (half an hour), crossing over the gorgeous Barmouth railway bridge on the other end. Coed y Brenin Forest Park (35 minutes) has plenty of trails too, through thick forest this time. You can take them on by mountain bike, standard bicycle or on foot – and there’s bike hire at the forest park.
