  • Family-friendly campsite adjoining a Winfrith Newburgh pub in Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive to the Jurassic Coast, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door
  • Showers and loos on site; delicious food and drink in The Red Lion pub
Set in the middle of lovely Dorset countryside and on the outskirts of the peaceful village of Winfrith Newburgh, The Red Lion is a family-run pub with a namesake campsite on the extensive field to its rear. There’s easy access by car to dump your gear at the spacious pitches – most are sheltered by mature trees – and modern facilities on-site include showers, mains water toilets and a washing-up area. The adjoining pub is open throughout the year: winter brings warming log fires while summer invites alfresco dining in the beer garden – and whenever you visit, you’re assured of a constant supply of delicious food as well as award-winning West Country ales and ciders. Luckily the site is dog-friendly as it’s a great base for soaking up Dorset’s rural vibe on quiet walks across the downs. If you’d like to spark up your barbecue while you’re there, there’s a small store in the village, otherwise do a bigger stock up in Dorchester (15 minutes).

Liked Lovely quiet site, good amenities, basic but everything we needed. Easy check in process. Lovely dinner and breakfast in the attached pub.

Disliked A couple of the evening bar staff members could have done with being a bit more cheerful! Also a bit of a shame the pub shuts at 10pm on a Saturday night.

Exceptional site very clean very friendly made you feel very welcome.

Liked Friendly staff, good sized pitches, clean and tidy. Pub had good value selection of food.

Disliked Showers need a place to hang more items for changing, need to do swaps for breakfast e.g. couldn’t swap beans for toast.

Not a £25/night experience.

Liked Flat and level. Pitches were allocated and the check-in was great!

Disliked You're allocated a pitch but none are marked! Cue loads of map and plan twirling and much confusion about where I was supposed to camp... Lovely chap spotted me and directed me in the end.

Showers are poor. You have to walk over a stony area to reach them and this all ends up on the shower floor. No duck board to stand on so the floor can't be kept clean. The lighting didn't work, which is unsafe and inconvenient. The enclosure doors were broken and hanging off so a lot of water ends up outside of the shower!

There's no provision for hand drying in the toilet either...

From the manager: Thank you for your detailed feedback—it’s really helpful. We’re sorry to hear about the confusion with pitch markings and the issues you experienced with the shower and toilet facilities. Your comments about the lighting, cleanliness, and hand drying provision have been noted, and we’ll be looking into improvements.

Liked Stayed here as a base for tankfest.
It’s local and only a few minutes drive away.
We had a grass pitch with electric hook up, it was a spacious pitch and close to all amenities, check in took minutes.
Plenty of toilets and showers (lovely warm water) cleaned regularly.
We ate breakfast and evening meals in the pub, food was delicious and at a reasonable cost.
All the staff there are brilliant accommodative and friendly, despite the Saturday evening being extremely busy,
Nothing was too much of an ask.
Very impressed with our stay at the red lion and we have already booked to return in a couple of months for a week to visit the local area.
Thank you so much for making our stay welcoming and pleasant.
We didn’t travel with children so cannot comment on that.

From the manager: Thank you so much for the wonderful review! We're delighted to hear you had such a positive experience during Tankfest weekend. It’s great to know our team helped make your stay welcoming. We truly appreciate your kind words and are thrilled you've already booked to come back.

Liked Nice little campsite for a nights stop over

Disliked Showers and toilet's are coded with is a pain and we’re not very pleasant. Went in the pub for a meal. Pretty sure we were the second table to order. After 55 minutes they came over to say they ran out of sausage and mash for my 2 year old, was told the replacement we chose would take 10 minutes. After a further 25 minutes the food arrived ( we’re not told upon ordering there would be a wait). Half way through the meal we order our child’s ice cream that should have come with the meal. A further 20 minutes it has still not arrive so we collect the bill, complaint and all we got was a measly discount. Appalling especially with a young hungry child who had to wait 1hr and 20 minutes for her dinner.

From the manager: Thank you for sharing your experience. We're very sorry to hear about the delays and issues you encountered during your meal —this is certainly not the standard we aim for. We appreciate your feedback about the shower and toilet codes as well. We hope you’ll give us another chance in the future to provide a much better experience.

Local attractions

You won’t have to wander very far afield to sample the best of Dorset attractions; The Red Lion is only 10 minutes’ drive from Man O’War Beach on the Jurassic Coast, the spectacular Durdle Door sea arch and romantic, almost circular Lulworth Cove. The kids will relish the chance to encounter the primates at Monkey World - Ape Rescue Centre (yes, also 10 minutes away), or see the nesting mute swans at Abbotsbury Swannery (40 minutes). Weymouth (25 minutes), its sandy beaches and Sea Life Adventure Park is also a good bet for keeping youngsters happy. Take the Dorset air as you scramble up to Osmington White Horse (15 minutes), cut into the limestone landscape in 1808, for views over the downs to the English Channel. There are more wonderful vistas to be had from hilltop Corfe Castle (also 15 minutes), and if any cobwebs still need blowing away, head to Chesil Beach (half an hour) for a blustery walk along the shingle.
