Lowther holiday park

  • Dog-friendly site on a private, wooded riverside in the Eden Valley
  • A 10-minute drive from Ullswater and 15 minutes from Lowther Castle
  • On-site bar; fly fishing available in the river Lowther
Whether it’s an active or a lazy Lake District getaway you have in mind, Lowther Holiday Park will get the opening scenes rolling splendidly. What might these scenes look like? Well, when you’re not unwinding in the site’s 40-acre managed woodland in the Eden Valley or paddling in the river running through the site, you might be out boating on Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge 10 minutes’ drive away. Have a gander at the medieval ruins of Lowther Castle & Gardens, which lie at the end of a quiet 40-minute woodland walk from the site. Then, recharge your batteries at one of the period pubs in Askham, 10 minutes’ drive away from the site. There’s also a family-run bar on site with outdoor entertainment in the summer. Down a mile-long, newly-laid and private tarmac drive lined with mature trees, this place really feels like a wildlife haven. The long Lowther river snakes through the site, so wade around the shallows and keep your eyes peeled for native red squirrels, wild rabbits and birds. You wouldn’t guess that junction 40 on the M6 is just 10 minutes’ drive away. Access to the site is through the scenic village of Eamont Bridge.

What customers say

A big, lovely park with great bush and river walks, a hit with families. Staff are friendly, facilities (including baths) are clean, and the on-site bakery is a bonus. Some found toilets a bit dated, with occasional cleanliness and noise issues. Caravan spots can be tight or lumpy, and Wi-Fi's patchy. No more food at the pub.

Liked The surrounding river and walks, the games room for the kids, the park areas.
The toilet and shower facilities, while they arnt new and perfectly clean at all times they are nowhere near as bad as some reviews make out, they where definitely clean enough and fine to use throughout our whole trip.

Disliked The loud rowdy group of famies who played music till midnight shouting basically loudly partying on our first night, once they left it was lovely. We wouldnt of minded as much if it was expected but the strict no music and quiet policy we expected a quiet peaceful site. Very small tent pitches meant i felt like we where sharing a tent with four other families we could hear everything from their tents.

Liked Quiet site from traffic, lovely setting in the trees and woodlands. Beautiful little river running by the side of the site. Nice pub with good food and friendly staff.

Disliked Toilets and shower blocks need cleaning and updating. Broken toilet seats and graffiti all over the toilet doors. Standard of cleanliness not brilliant but acceptable

Powered grass and gravel caravan site (super)

Liked The location was lovely and we really loved spending time by the river on the hot days. Good pitch with the electric and water hook up very close.
Friendly staff upon arrival and in the bar etc

Disliked The toilet block whilst clean, had issues with the showers. 3 of the cubicles were out of use and the day before we left all of them were out of action.
Also several of the lights didn’t work so was quite dingy, wouldn’t want to be taking a shower at night!
Also felt quite compacted in with lots of other people and was pretty noisy at times. Didn’t affect us in the caravan but friends we came with who were in a tent said a couple of nights others were playing music after midnight and laughing etc until the early hours.
Lack of wifi is also and issue and we chose not to buy it because the price was ridiculously high

Liked Shaded which was great for getting to sleep. Parks are lovely

Disliked Parents not looking after their children and were unsupervised, ended up in fights and little children having to leave. Toilets and washrooms were not the nicest with no code to get in so open to everyone.

Local attractions

Set an early alarm, because you’ll want plenty of time to explore the Lake District’s second-largest lake. There’s a 20-mile path around Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge (10 minutes’ drive). So, take it all in on foot, or opt for the boat hire and cruises if you’d like to cover as much ground (or rather, water) as possible in one go. Haweswater Reservoir (half an hour) isn’t as busy as Ullswater, making it a great pick for more peaceful days out hiking. Penrith (10 minutes) will pick up the pace once again; there’s the popular Beacon Hill hike for those not done with the outdoorsy adventures and a museum and 14th-century castle for those interested in a slice of history. As Lowther Holiday Park is so close to the A66 and the M6, it’s not so tricky to take a day trip to the Yorkshire Dales National Park (45 minutes), Hexham (an hour and 15 minutes) or Barnard Castle (an hour and five minutes) either.
