Lowther holiday park
Lowther castle

  • Dog-friendly site on a private, wooded riverside in the Eden Valley
  • A 10-minute drive from Ullswater and 15 minutes from Lowther Castle
  • On-site bar; fly fishing available in the river Lowther
Whether it’s an active or a lazy Lake District getaway you have in mind, Lowther Holiday Park will get the opening scenes rolling splendidly. What might these scenes look like? Well, when you’re not unwinding in the site’s 40-acre managed woodland in the Eden Valley or paddling in the river running through the site, you might be out boating on Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge 10 minutes’ drive away. Have a gander at the medieval ruins of Lowther Castle & Gardens, which lie at the end of a quiet 40-minute woodland walk from the site. Then, recharge your batteries at one of the period pubs in Askham, 10 minutes’ drive away from the site. There’s also a family-run bar on site with outdoor entertainment in the summer. Down a mile-long, newly-laid and private tarmac drive lined with mature trees, this place really feels like a wildlife haven. The long Lowther river snakes through the site, so wade around the shallows and keep your eyes peeled for native red squirrels, wild rabbits and birds. You wouldn’t guess that junction 40 on the M6 is just 10 minutes’ drive away. Access to the site is through the scenic village of Eamont Bridge.

What customers say

A lovely, scenic site near woods & river, great for wildlife and walks to Lowther Castle. Staff are friendly, facilities (showers with baths) are clean and good value. However, some found pitches cramped/uneven, facilities dated, and the shop/pub inconsistent.

Liked Trees and surrounding green. Nice to be cool amongst the woods.

Disliked Drainage in the showers needs to be improved. Don’t pick the end shower or you will end up paddling. Plus shop was out of action.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Beautiful site, close to the river, plenty for kids to do, very reasonable booking price. Staff were friendly at check in and liked they gave us till 12 to check out. Pub on site. Area was very clean and pretty. Was worried about toilets and showers from negative reviews but were all clean when we was there and had no issues and warm shower. Could park car right next to tent. Drinking water stations were everywhere so was handy. Had a bike track, parks, football pitch, big fields to play rounders and cricket. Lots of wildfire hares, foxes, ducks. Close to walking paths. 15 min drive to Lowther Castle and 5-10 minutes to Penrith.

Disliked Toilets being so far away from tent section. They are in the middle near holiday homes and campervans would of been better near tents who really need them. Hard if you ended up desperate.
Requested being close to friends tents was told we would be... but was put on complete opposite ends which was tricky sharing our equipment and wouldn't let us change pitch. Would of liked to have known our pitches or got choice to choose when booking.
Washing up area far from tents also.

Liked Great settings, great value, nice little pub with decent food and drink, easy to find walking and cycling routes.

Powered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked Location of site is very good with lots of facilities on site and near to the town of Penrith and Ullswater

Disliked The touring pitch we were allocated was not as described. Rather than being placed on the advertised touring pitches we were placed on an abandoned seasonal pitch which was very neglected and covered in weeds and debris and the next door pitch was effectively a scrap yard. We were hugely disappointed as where we should have been was much nicer and had many empty pitches. When I complained, the managers attitude was basically not my problem, pitches are allocated by central office and he can’t move us.

Powered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked The pitch was a good size situated in amongst trees but still got enough sun light.
Large site with loads to do,a kids park, bike track and right next to a river.
No issues with checking in or out.
Facilities were clean.
Overall one of the best sites we've been to but could be absolutely perfect

Disliked Door code to get into the toilets was almost a disaster as I nearly crapped myself. Why can't we just go in like normal sites?
The pub doesn't do food which looks like a missed chance and also no onsite shop to buy stuff. We would have bought a meal in the pub and bought stuff from the shop if we could .

We chose a hard standing pitch with electric but it was an extra £4 for an awning, which was a bit sly as the grass bit would have been empty otherwise and there was a small tent on the next pitch, did they get charged £4? You should just be charged for the pitch, simple as that.

Local attractions

Set an early alarm, because you’ll want plenty of time to explore the Lake District’s second-largest lake. There’s a 20-mile path around Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge (10 minutes’ drive). So, take it all in on foot, or opt for the boat hire and cruises if you’d like to cover as much ground (or rather, water) as possible in one go. Haweswater Reservoir (half an hour) isn’t as busy as Ullswater, making it a great pick for more peaceful days out hiking. Penrith (10 minutes) will pick up the pace once again; there’s the popular Beacon Hill hike for those not done with the outdoorsy adventures and a museum and 14th-century castle for those interested in a slice of history. As Lowther Holiday Park is so close to the A66 and the M6, it’s not so tricky to take a day trip to the Yorkshire Dales National Park (45 minutes), Hexham (an hour and 15 minutes) or Barnard Castle (an hour and five minutes) either.
