  • Quiet family-run Cumbria site almost on the England-Scotland border
  • Hadrian's Wall, Lake District or Dumfries a half-hour drive away
  • Easy access to M6, A7 and National Cycle Route 7
Which way will you go – north to Scotland, west to the Solway coast, east to Hadrian’s Wall or south to Carlisle and the Lake District? The options are indeed plentiful when you stay at High Gaitle Caravan Park, a quiet family-run site in the Cumbria countryside. This handily located site is just off the A6071 between Longtown (two minutes’ drive) and Gretna (five minutes), putting it almost on the border between Scotland and England. Easy access to/from the M6, A7 and National Cycle Route 7 make this a useful spot for a short stopover on a long journey, but as you can see from the list above there are plenty of options for entertainment nearby if you’re staying over for a longer break. It’s a fairly simple setup here, with an emphasis on doing the essentials well rather than providing lots of facilities. That means you’ll have access to bathrooms (with a wheelchair-accessible area), a chemical disposal point and a washing-up area, but you shouldn't expect things like wifi or a play area. Pitches are nicely flat and sheltered by trees, and you’ll be allowed to bring along a barbecue for a bit of outdoor cookery. Dogs are also welcome on site. Need any help while you're here? Friendly manager Steven lives on site and is happy to offer local advice – the family have lived here for many years, so they certainly know their way around.

Liked Loved this site!
Was worried about the forecaster 37mph winds but the sits is surrounded by trees keeping the wind to a minimum!
Lovely small peaceful site perfectly located for what we needed - a trip to walby farm park (20mins away) a shopping trip to Carlisle (20mins away) and a wee 5min trip to Gretna for food supplies!
Facilities are beautiful, with added wee extras - ice poles, tea/coffee making stuff!
Little tree swings was an added bonus for my wee 1! Met on arrival, made to feel very welcome and pitch was a fab size!!

Disliked The road noise was a pain but nothing a good set of earplugs didn’t eliminate!

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked We liked the cleanliness. For example, the showers and toilets were clean. I must say the land and the whole park were clean, as well, with the grass nicely cut.

Disliked I didn't find anything so far.

Liked 5 minutes drive from the M6 so ideal stop off point on way to scotland. Very spacious site, great facilities, always clean and well stocked up, owner very helpful and pleasant and always wondering round keeping the place perfect.

From the manager: Thank you so much, Dan, what a fantastic review to receive.

We’re really pleased the park worked perfectly as a stop‑off on your way to Scotland. Hearing that you found it spacious, with great facilities that were always clean and well stocked, genuinely means a lot to us. Steven will be chuffed you thought he was helpful and pleasant, he’s forever wandering around making sure everything is just right, so your comment fits him perfectly.

Being only a few minutes from the M6 is something many guests appreciate, so it’s lovely to hear the location suited you well too.

Thank you for the brilliant 10/10. We’d be delighted to welcome you back to the park anytime.

Excellent stop over just off motorway.

Liked Ideal stop over on our way to Lossiemouth. Super friendly and helpful staff. Wash block exceptionally clean. Huge off lead dog field. Lastly, I’ve never been to a site that has free tea, coffee, biscuits and ice pops in the kitchen area, what an absolute gem! Highly recommend.

Disliked Tiny bit of road noise at night but not enough to bother us.

From the manager: Thank you so much, Tracey, what a wonderful review to receive.

We’re really pleased the park worked perfectly as a stopover on your journey to Lossiemouth. Hearing that you found the team super friendly, the wash block exceptionally clean, and the dog field a huge bonus genuinely means a lot to us. And we’re delighted you enjoyed the complimentary tea, coffee, biscuits and ice pops, those little touches are something we love offering, so it’s lovely to hear they stood out to you.

Thank you for mentioning the slight road noise too. As you say, it’s there in the background, but we’re glad it didn’t affect your stay or your 10/10 experience.

Liked Spacious campsite, good facilities, everything you could need. Great sized dog exercise area! This is my second time here! I’ve used it twice as a stop over on my long drives and it’s been great.

Disliked BEWARE of the midges!!! Obviously nothing can be done about this but something to know about beforehand to make sure sprays etc are packed!!

From the manager: Thank you so much, Heather, it’s lovely to welcome you back again.

We’re really glad you found the park spacious, peaceful and well‑equipped, and it’s great to hear the facilities and dog exercise area suited you so well. Knowing this was your second stopover with us genuinely means a lot; it’s wonderful that we’ve been a reliable place for you to rest on long journeys.

And yes… the midges. They do love a summer evening in the countryside. Thank you for mentioning it so other guests can come prepared, a good spray and a bit of planning definitely helps.

We really appreciate the 10/10 and your continued support. You’re always welcome back at the park whenever you’re passing through.

Local attractions

Sticking to the English side of the border first, you may like to head to Carlisle (20 minutes' drive) for the castle, cathedral and Tullie House Museum, perhaps taking a detour to Walby Farm Park (15 minutes), Solway Aviation Museum (20 minutes) or Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre (20 minutes) en route. Head further down the M6 and you’ll get to the Lake District National Park (about half an hour) for walks, watersports and boat trips. There are lots of great walks over to the east, too, in the Northumberland National Park or the North Pennines National Landscape. Some of those trails take in sections of Hadrian’s Wall – or you can head directly to top spots like the Roman Army Museum (half an hour) and Housesteads Roman Fort (40 minutes). Moving north into Scotland, your first stop will surely be Gretna (five minutes) – you may not be eloping, as many couples once did, but the designer outlet may still furnish you with a new outfit or two. From there, it’s not far at all to places like Annandale Distillery (15 minutes) and The Devil’s Porridge Museum (10 minutes), telling the story of Gretna’s World War I munitions factory.
