  • Quiet family-run Cumbria site almost on the England-Scotland border
  • Hadrian's Wall, Lake District or Dumfries a half-hour drive away
  • Easy access to M6, A7 and National Cycle Route 7
Which way will you go – north to Scotland, west to the Solway coast, east to Hadrian’s Wall or south to Carlisle and the Lake District? The options are indeed plentiful when you stay at High Gaitle Caravan Park, a quiet family-run site in the Cumbria countryside. This handily located site is just off the A6071 between Longtown (two minutes’ drive) and Gretna (five minutes), putting it almost on the border between Scotland and England. Easy access to/from the M6, A7 and National Cycle Route 7 make this a useful spot for a short stopover on a long journey, but as you can see from the list above there are plenty of options for entertainment nearby if you’re staying over for a longer break. It’s a fairly simple setup here, with an emphasis on doing the essentials well rather than providing lots of facilities. That means you’ll have access to bathrooms (with a wheelchair-accessible area), a chemical disposal point and a washing-up area, but you shouldn't expect things like wifi or a play area. Pitches are nicely flat and sheltered by trees, and you’ll be allowed to bring along a barbecue for a bit of outdoor cookery. Dogs are also welcome on site. Need any help while you're here? Friendly manager Steven lives on site and is happy to offer local advice – the family have lived here for many years, so they certainly know their way around.

What customers say

Owners and staff get a big thumbs up for being friendly. Facilities are clean, with nice touches like toiletries and free hot drinks. Great spot for a stopover, being close to the M6. Showers could do with a spruce-up and there's occasional road noise, but generally well-kept.

Sam C. 1 review

Powered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked Lovely relaxed site. Friendly and welcoming site owner, good pitches (some you will need a long electric cable!), good shower block and appreciated the nice little touches of toiletries and rubber duck!

Disliked Other half did not like the shower having to keep pressing the button for water. But I prefer this to the scrappy electric ones in many sites, and the water is hot and good pressure.

From the manager: Thank you, Sam, for taking the time to leave a review. We’re really pleased you both enjoyed your stay and found the site relaxed, the pitches comfortable and the shower block well kept. It’s great to hear our little touches were appreciated.

Thank you also for the feedback on the push‑button showers. We know they divide opinion, but they do help keep the water consistently hot with good pressure, so it’s helpful to hear both perspectives.

We’re delighted you’d recommend us and visit again, and we’d be very happy to welcome you back.

Liked Excellent, met all our needs.
Quiet and peaceful, given you are just off the road there was very little road noise.
A very clean and tidy site.
Facilities block was well kempt and stocked.
The site owner has added various little complimentary essentials, should they be required, a nice welcoming touch.
Would definitely recommend, certainly value for money.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked The reception was great after a 7 hour drive and the included coffee and icepol was very welcoming. With no electric and a small one night tent, plenty of space to find. We will return on the way back.

Disliked Slightly noisy from the MoD next door overnight, but nothing of concern.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Simple, Clean quiet site (ignoring road noise which "is what it is"). Welcome greeting. Easy check in , decent washing up and drinks facilities , which make this site memorable as welcoming and hospitable. I arrived and as such could make a cup of coffee and have a Biscoff biscuit right away !! Amazing start. I would stay again. Great to break my journey back from Scotland.

Disliked Timed showers are a dislike - or consider extending the time ? Its amazing how a simple interruption like this can make an experience a chore , rather than a simple pleasure. I know environmental etc and costs - but a shower unhindered is a pleasure ....Or is this just a me thing ? :)

We’re glad you’d stay again and look forward to welcoming you back.

Local attractions

Sticking to the English side of the border first, you may like to head to Carlisle (20 minutes' drive) for the castle, cathedral and Tullie House Museum, perhaps taking a detour to Walby Farm Park (15 minutes), Solway Aviation Museum (20 minutes) or Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre (20 minutes) en route. Head further down the M6 and you’ll get to the Lake District National Park (about half an hour) for walks, watersports and boat trips. There are lots of great walks over to the east, too, in the Northumberland National Park or the North Pennines National Landscape. Some of those trails take in sections of Hadrian’s Wall – or you can head directly to top spots like the Roman Army Museum (half an hour) and Housesteads Roman Fort (40 minutes). Moving north into Scotland, your first stop will surely be Gretna (five minutes) – you may not be eloping, as many couples once did, but the designer outlet may still furnish you with a new outfit or two. From there, it’s not far at all to places like Annandale Distillery (15 minutes) and The Devil’s Porridge Museum (10 minutes), telling the story of Gretna’s World War I munitions factory.
