After somewhere to stay that's peaceful, spacious and right within spectacular rural Northumberland? Border Forest Caravan Park should be just right, as it's within the Northumberland National Park. It's also committed to sustainable tourism, going to great lengths to reduce its environmental impact, with a solar panel and battery storage systems providing most of the park's electricity. If you have a canine adventurer, prepare to bring them here. Many walkies are available in the area surrounding the park. It has direct access (from its bridge) to the mighty Kielder Forest and the Pennine Way. Its location and its amicable, quiet and family-friendly feel make Border Forest Caravan Park a popular place. The amenities are kept clean and include ladies' and gents' showers with free hot water, plus toilets and washing-up facilities in the park's centre. (It's worth noting that from time to time during the summer months pesky midges make an appearance, so it's worth packing your repellents.) As Border Forest is a quiet park, there's no shop or club on site, but a small supermarket is a short drive away. The local village Otterburn has a café, pubs, shops and a tourist information centre.

Peaceful spot, great for walkers & dogs (off-lead). Friendly staff, stunning views. Some facilities are a bit old, and midges can be an issue. Shops/pubs are a drive away, but that's part of the charm.

Disliked Showers and toilets were cold as the heating system was broken. Toilets a long way from the touring pitches.

Camping pod (backpacker, no cars)

Liked This is a lovely peaceful park and very scenic this would’ve been our 4th stay here if not double booked.

Disliked Not being double booked after 1hr drive and having to find somewhere else for the evening

Liked Location is perfect. We pitched right next to the river with electric hook up.
The enclosed dog field is amazing, with seating to relax on while your dogs are off wondering. There were plenty of waste poo bins all around the site. Staff were very friendly and helpful too.

Disliked Kitchen facilities and toilet and shower blocks were tired and really need an update. They served a purpose.

Camping pod (backpacker, no cars)

Liked Lovely quiet setting. Pod was warm and had heating if needed.

Disliked Water tap next to pod not working. So further to go for nearest water.
Toilet block was right at other end of site. So a trail at any time.
The shower had good pressure and was hot but the space was cold and tired. In need of a bit of tlc.
Some form of basic supplies would have been good given how far from shops/eateries etc.

Liked Great site situated in the middle of nowhere. Ideal for piece and quiet, and right on the Pennine Way and local trails for hiking and dog walking. Site facilities are basic, I'd say more aimed at campers but the showers were nice and warm which makes all the difference. Local cafe just a short drive up the road serving great food. Owner was polite and welcoming.
Would definitely visit again when stopping in the area.

Liked The best dog walking area I’ve found at a campsite, lots of space, interesting paths, really lovely.

Disliked The shower block is tired, however the showers themselves are very good.

Liked Beautiful site. Very peaceful and relaxed. Stunning setting in the forest with a river flowing by. Facilities are basic but good - hot showers, undercover washing up area and even a microwave. We had a warm welcome and the staff were all really nice. We loved it here and will come back.

Liked Great site nestled within Kielder Forest in Northumberland.
The site is relatively small with the majority of spaces taken up with static vans however, touring pitches are all located next to the streams running through the site. Electricity is an easy hook up and fresh drinking water is close at hand to any of the pitches you have as well as waste water.
The shower/toilet block is a short meander away which are adequate to your needs. There not plush but they serve a purpose.
If you’re bringing pets along there’s more than enough options for walks and strolls with a pig pen onsite for the younger ones to enjoy.
Overall, our visit near the end of September was quite and the site owners are certainly very friendly, welcoming and happy to assist.

Disliked This is an observation more than anything else and should certainly not be construed as a negative; slightly better signage for amenities i.e. showers & grey water waste disposal.

Kielder Forest is indeed mighty: this is the biggest human-made woodland in England and covers 250 acres. Roe deer roam here, many an archaeological feature and Site of Special Scientific Interest can be found, and the forest is also home to Kielder Castle, piles of walking and cycling trails, and Kielder Observatory (this is top stargazing territory too). Also in the forest, mosey along to the reservoir Kielder Water and Leaplish Waterside Park to hire fishing and pleasure boats, hide in the red squirrel hide, walk on water or try other activities like archery, crossbows, sea scooters or gymnastics. Within easy driving distance of the site are famed Northumberland and Scottish Borders attractions like the budget-friendly Jedforest farm and animal park with native and exotic species and Mary Queen of Scots' House, both at Jedburgh 25 minutes away; Alnwick Castle and Hadrian's Wall (about an hour, and both also rather mighty); 19th-century Cragside House (45 minutes' drive), and the first-class Holy Island of Lindisfarne off the Northumberland coast (an hour and a half). Clay pigeon shooting is also available locally.
