After somewhere to stay that's peaceful, spacious and right within spectacular rural Northumberland? Border Forest Caravan Park should be just right, as it's within the Northumberland National Park. It's also committed to sustainable tourism, going to great lengths to reduce its environmental impact, with a solar panel and battery storage systems providing most of the park's electricity. If you have a canine adventurer, prepare to bring them here. Many walkies are available in the area surrounding the park. It has direct access (from its bridge) to the mighty Kielder Forest and the Pennine Way. Its location and its amicable, quiet and family-friendly feel make Border Forest Caravan Park a popular place. The amenities are kept clean and include ladies' and gents' showers with free hot water, plus toilets and washing-up facilities in the park's centre. (It's worth noting that from time to time during the summer months pesky midges make an appearance, so it's worth packing your repellents.) As Border Forest is a quiet park, there's no shop or club on site, but a small supermarket is a short drive away. The local village Otterburn has a café, pubs, shops and a tourist information centre.

Liked Location is fantastic for lots of lovely peaceful walks. The site has its own large dog walking area too. Staff we met were friendly and helpful. Showers had plenty of continuous hot water but the block itself could do with a little tlc. Appreciate this is towards end of season and all facilities will have had lots of footfall.

Disliked The long walk to the toilets from the Motorhome/Campervan pitches if you need to go through the night. A toilet block near these pitches would make a world of difference.

Liked Lovely site, small, peaceful, great location to escape for a few days. First time away in our camper van. Friendly staff and owners, loved the dog walking area, beautifully landscaped along the river with ponds for wildlife. Will definitely stay here again. Great site.

Disliked Unsure why the toilets for the camper van pitches were closed? Seems a bit odd only having the ones at the other side of the site open when the static caravans have their own toilets and showers on board. Didn't feel comfortable getting to them on my own in pitch dark middle of the night. Surely the ones near the camper vans are the ones that need to be open?

Reason we now only have main toilets and showers open is, we keep having problems with them ,they would have to be completely knocked down and rebuilt,the cost would be considerable, There are 2 pitches very near the toilets ,plus another close .
We are in the middle of the Dark skies area ,so have to keep lighting down

Camping pod (backpacker, no cars)

Liked Showers were spacious and powerful. Warm and friendly welcome.

Disliked Cabin was dry and clean but wooden floor less comfortable than a grass pitch!

Liked Quiet site nestled in nature. We loved being in the forest, by the river and surrounded by countryside. The site is very nature-friendly and there are so many walks right from the site.

We liked that Border Forest is so dog-friendly too, it seemed as though almost everyone had a dog.

Disliked Having to leave and come home.

Liked Loved the location and staff. It’s a beautiful site with a great access for walking. Our kids loved the pigs, the bridges over the water to play pooh sticks. The walk up to the ‘three king stone circle’ took 10 mins with the kids and was definitely worth it for the view.
Would return without hesitation.

Disliked Toilet block and showers need upgrading. Not enough hot water for more than one person to shower.

Kielder Forest is indeed mighty: this is the biggest human-made woodland in England and covers 250 acres. Roe deer roam here, many an archaeological feature and Site of Special Scientific Interest can be found, and the forest is also home to Kielder Castle, piles of walking and cycling trails, and Kielder Observatory (this is top stargazing territory too). Also in the forest, mosey along to the reservoir Kielder Water and Leaplish Waterside Park to hire fishing and pleasure boats, hide in the red squirrel hide, walk on water or try other activities like archery, crossbows, sea scooters or gymnastics. Within easy driving distance of the site are famed Northumberland and Scottish Borders attractions like the budget-friendly Jedforest farm and animal park with native and exotic species and Mary Queen of Scots' House, both at Jedburgh 25 minutes away; Alnwick Castle and Hadrian's Wall (about an hour, and both also rather mighty); 19th-century Cragside House (45 minutes' drive), and the first-class Holy Island of Lindisfarne off the Northumberland coast (an hour and a half). Clay pigeon shooting is also available locally.
