  • Adults-only site 10 minutes’ drive from Richmond in North Yorkshire
  • Catterick Racecourse five minutes’ drive; Easby Abbey 40 minutes’ walk
  • Dog-friendly pitches; Brompton on Swale pub and shop 10 minutes’ walk
For a quiet adults-only North Yorkshire stay far removed from the hurly burly of everyday life, Millfields Caravan and Camping is a tiny site tucked away in Brompton on Swale, a historic village mentioned in the Domesday Book. Peaceful it certainly is, yet there’s masses to do and see hereabouts. The lively market town of Richmond is 10 minutes’ drive away, with its photogenic Georgian architecture, museums, a castle and lots of entertainment options from cosy inns to chic restaurants. It’s also gateway to adventures in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and any keen racing fans among you have the choice of nine major racecourses: York is an hour’s drive, Wetherby 40 minutes, and Catterick a doddle to get to, being a mere five minutes away. And back on site, the manicured pitches look out over lush countryside (great for walking any dogs you've brought along), with simple facilities including showers and washing-up areas. If you choose to conjure up alfresco feasts on the barbecue, pick up essentials in the handy local shop, or you can always head to the village pub for a pint and a pie (both 10 minutes’ walk).

Liked: Absolutely loved the campsite. The tent pitches are spacious and very clean.
Some of the reviews regarding the toilets nearly put us off booking however we can honestly say that there was nothing wrong with the toilets or showers. They were clean and showers were great!! The pub down the road The Crown was a lovely stop off after a day at Catterick races. The area around the campsite is stunning. We would definitely stay again x

Powered concrete and grass site

Liked: Proximity to A1(M), ability to turn up any time (we arrived at 3.40am), adult only, very quiet and size of site (less than 30 pitches).

Disliked: Toilet and showers were small, tired, lacked some basics like hooks to hang things up, tiny sink with no where to put anything down, no shelf for toiletries in the shower, (I had to put everything on the toilet seat).

Liked: Lovely and clean site, definitely go again

Disliked: I was allocated a pitch when we got there someone else was on our pitch, and my name wasn't on the board. I phoned and spoke to a lovely lady, she was so apologetic, and gave me another pitch, but that wouldn't put me off going again.

Liked: Lovely site, it is not staffed but pitches were clearly marked. There are 2 toilet/shower blocks both were clean. Pub and shop a very easy walk away and lovely walks down by the river. We would definitely go back.

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Flat spacious pitches, quiet location on edge of village, good to have a washing up space. I chose the site because it’s adults only, and BBQ is allowed. EHU was fine for my needs. Facilities are clean and at the time of year of this visit they were not over-used. Loved the location as it was right in the middle of the places I planned to visit.

Disliked: Not a dislike, more a comment to help others decide if it’d suit; the shower cubicle is quite small with no bench, so it might not suit someone with mobility/balance issues.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, and your suggestions they have been taken on board. :-)

Liked: Position of camping site.

Disliked: No bin in kitchen for waste food. No tourist information board and they was room in pot room to put one up. No leaflets or a map of surrounding area showing walks.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. A notice board is on our list for the new shower block once its finished.

Local attractions

Stroll directly from your pitch to the spectacular hilltop ruins of 12th-century Easby Abbey (40 minutes’ walk), or have a ramble along the River Swale to Richmond Castle and the pebble beach at Richmond Falls (both roughly an hour). And of course, there are hikes and cycle rides for all levels of ability in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (15 minutes’ drive). Head to Foxglove Covert Local Nature Reserve (20 minutes) for the chance to spy birds of prey and kingfishers in the moorland, meadow and wetland habitats, or if stately houses are on your agenda, combine exploring formal gardens and a lakeside park at Jacobean-era Kiplin Hall (10 minutes) with a tour of the mansion’s richly decorated rooms. The likelihood is you’ll adore fussing over the camels, llamas and ostriches at Mainsgill Farm Shop (15 minutes), where you can also tuck into a tasty cream tea. Should the weather turn against you, book tickets for blockbuster films at The Station or tour Richmond’s restored Georgian Theatre Royal (both 10 minutes), still with its original stage and seating.
