Wild camping with loads of space for everyone

  • Pick your own pitch at a 12-acre site on the banks of the River Avon
  • Warwick Castle and Royal Leamington Spa within 15 minutes' drive
  • Fishing on site (for an extra charge); farm shop/café a mile away
There are many reasons why one might fancy settling down by a river – perhaps for the fishing, the views, the wildlife… maybe even the chance to get in the water. Happily, all of the above are on the cards at Avon Wild Camping, a peaceful Warwickshire site on the banks of the River Avon 15 minutes' drive from Leamington Spa. There’s a mighty pretty stretch of the river running alongside one side of this site, making it a prime spot for kids to paddle and catch minnows in the shallows (under supervision, of course) or for grownups to pick up permits (available on site for an extra charge) to try their luck with the chub, pike, grayling, roach and brown trout that swim in the waters. It’s a popular part of the world with wildlife too, so settling down by the river with binoculars and/or a drink also comes highly recommended. All is very laidback around here: it’s a pick-your-own pitch place, with heaps of space to choose from around the 12 acres of meadow. Being a back-to-basics site, there are no electric hookups, but there is access to limited (but clean) toilet facilities, showers and running water. As this is an eco site, the toilets run on rainwater, guests are strongly encouraged to recycle and, without wifi, the kids are free to focus on playing by the river. Alfresco meals can be cooked up at the campfire area; there are firepits and kiln-dried timber available if you need them. Pick up supplies for such things at the farm shop a mile away; it’s also got a café for coffee, cakes, pizzas and other meals if you’d rather eat out. There are several good country pubs nearby too, or you could scoot into Royal Leamington Spa (10 minutes’ drive) for more places to eat and drink.

What customers say

A top spot for chill wild camping with plenty of space, often by the river. Campers rave about the clean loos, top staff, and peaceful vibe. Kids love the river, rope swings, and freedom. Basic but has fire pits/wood for sale. Easy check-in. Some note limited facilities/noise.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Lovely campsite by the river. Plenty of fire pits available., can also purchase logs. 4 toilets/showerz

Disliked Quite a few aeroplanes flying over in the day. We had other campers set up right next to our tent and didn’t respect our space, even though there was plenty of space left in the field

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked We stayed here last year for the first time and come back this year. We already plan to return next year again! We love being able to just disconnect from the world. Being able to have a fire to sit around is a big plus for us. It makes it. As well as being able to go down to the river and just spend time with each other as a family without added distractions. The kids absolutely love exploring and finding different ways down to the river and going in the river.
We just absolutely love it.

Disliked Minimal things not really dislikes because without these we still loved every second. Last year the hut was open serving tea and coffee in the mornings and on the evenings- we didn’t know this had changed so didn’t pack tea and coffee making things but really missed it. (Like I said nothing major and we got over it quickly 1st world problems really 🤣).

Parts of the grass was really over grown which at parts we had to walk through because of where pitch availability was. Again nothing major. But I was just very on edge of ticks because I know they like long grass 🤣

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked - Plenty of space even at peak times
- Great location with Warwick and leamington spa within 15 mins.
- clean accessible river (too shallow and overgrown to launch a cayak / paddleboard from - but there’s plenty of launch points a short drive away).
- The toilets were always clean and stocked
- Warm showers in 2 of the toilets

Plan ahead for the fact you need to take the rubbish away with you - there are some local skips open every day.

Would definitely come back!

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Just got back from a long weekend camping with a couple of other families. Absolutely idyllic, we all loved it and would definitely go back. Loads of rope swings for the kids to play on, lots of little bits along the river to explore, which was lovely and shady when the temperature was high. A lot of the time was spent paddling around and we had a last splash after packing the tents away 😁 Facilities-wise there are two toilets, and two toilet/wetrooms, and one washing up sink, so sometimes a bit of a queue but not too bad at all.

Disliked One thing to bear in mind is that all rubbish needs to be taken off site with you, and we’d packed our car to the max. We tried to separate out anything that we could burn in the fire pit to reduce what we needed to bin. Toilet roll is replenished daily but bring your own hand soap as there's none provided. Was kind of noisy until gone 11, so that’s worth bearing in mind if you’re going with little ones.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked It's great that you can pick any spot rather than have assigned pitches, and lovely that they are relaxed about having fires. Love the scenery and the fact it feels like a very well kept secret. *Lovely* location - the river is beautiful. Russell on-site makes it feel that the place is well looked after.

Disliked I liked the simple and quirky toilet block but having the showers in the same cubicle as the toilets meant in the morning it could be a very long wait for the toilet as two out of the four of them were being used as showers. Could be improved by having toilets and showers separated.

Local attractions

The big draw around here is Warwick Castle (15 minutes’ drive) – it’s well worth a proper day out to explore the dungeons, take in the shows, get lost in the maze, see the birds of prey flying, wander through the 64 acres of the estate… oh, and visit the castle itself, of course. For something just a little less expansive, head instead to Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Garden (15 minutes) or stroll around the pretty Jephson Gardens in Royal Leamington Spa (10 minutes). Coventry (15 minutes) and Stratford-upon-Avon (25 minutes) are other good options for urban days out; try Ryton Pools Country Park (five minutes) or Stoneleigh Deer Golf Club (over the road) if you’d rather stay rural. If you need family days out, take bouncy kids over to the Jump In trampoline park (15 minutes), or get set for farm-based fun among the animals, play areas, funfair rides and escape rooms at Hatton Adventure World (25 minutes).
