Walesby Forest: Archery

General

  • Adventurous site set in 250 acres of woodland and other rural scenery
  • A mile from Walesby village and 35 minutes' drive from Lincoln
  • On-site bar and shop; over 40 leisure activities on land and water

If you're looking to alternate between relaxing in 250 acres of Robin Hood country and a whole host of adventurous activities, seek out a spot at Walesby Forest in leafy Nottinghamshire.

The vast range of leisure activities here should help even those averse to alfresco exercise get moving, with popular options including watersports, climbing, archery and rifle shooting. A friendly team of dedicated instructors is on hand to make sure all that outdoor action takes place in a safe, low-pressure environment. The programme is updated daily, with a flexible play and pay policy to keep it all affordable.

Time to swap sporty sessions for a bit of downtime? Take your pick from drinks or snacks at the bar, a poolside snooze or rambles through the site's wild woodland areas, where all sorts of animals can be spotted. Angling fans may find it similarly peaceful to take advantage of the free river Maun fishing opportunities available on site.

When it comes to food, there's a handy catering barn (which, with advance notice, can sort meals for guests with special dietary requirements), plus a small shop that stocks plenty of sweet treats and souvenirs. If you'd rather step out for dinner, make your way into Walesby (a mile away), where two popular establishments are all set to serve up pub-cooked food.

The amount of space and size of the pitches, on site pub with food, choice of activities and that more toilet blocks have been added since we visited last year.

    Disliked:

The on site shop has very limited supplies as it’s more of a gift shop - would be perfect if it just stocked a few more basic provisions

The activities were brilliant, not Alton Towers by any means, but the kids loved them and being able to go on as many times as you like meant we could spend the whole time on site and not have to worry about finding things to do.

The pitch we had was huge and quite distanced from other groups, this suited us just fine as we felt we had some privacy and didn't feel like we were kept up at night by others noise.

The staff were brilliant too, one chap helped my son get over his worry of going down the water slide, and he now says that was his favourite activity, they were all really friendly and more than happy to play with the kids.

    Disliked:

At a stretch I could say the pot washing station was a bit of a walk from our pitch, but it wasn't very far at all, and the loos which were closest to us weren't lit, so you needed a torch after dark.

    Nothing special!

    Disliked:

Absolutely amazed and gobsmacked to be charged £9 for one night electric hookup. How can this be justified? A fridge and hot water plus LED lights surely can't rack up that cost in one night. This was the highest charge for a caravan pitch plus electric hookup that we have been charged this year and we spent a month touring Spain. Needless to say we won't be visiting rip off Walesby forest again! Added to which wifi (although included) was only available in the bar area (strange that, increased bar custom?) In this day and age wifi repeaters are common place and don't break the bank, stop fleecing your customers it is a very short term gain!

The activities, and moreso, the staff. For what is mostly a very young crew of staff they all, without fail, seemed genuinely interested in ensuring the children had a great time. There's plenty of other places where the staff are just 'going through the motions', or the good activities carry a lacklustre staff attitude, but not here. The staff engaged with all of the children in a kind and friendly manner, introduced little games to keep them entertained (like running the assault course backwards, or on one foot), and honestly improved the whole experience no end. They are all to be commended on a job well done.
The facilities were average for a campsite that size, not really "sparkling clean", but not really dirty either, I didn't have any issues using them.
If I return or recommend the site, it'll be based solely on these staff and the way they conduct the activities.

    Disliked:

Noisy Neighbours, Ants, Wasps (in that order).
The ants were a pain. They got into everything that wasn't sealed, and on one day they even had a mass spawning of flying ants right into our porch area. Cue a 40 minute evacuation of everything so I could help them all outside.
The wasps, whilst numerous, were actually non-agressive. The group I was with had plenty of occasions where wasps landed on us (including on one child's face 4 times), and nobody was ever stung, even after some of the kids decided to try and bat them away. Your mileage may vary, but the main inconvenience came from the fear they induced, rather than an actual posed threat.
Whatever, little beasties are (mostly) beyond control and to be expected.

What isn't beyond control however is the late night parties. Walesby put a note on their rules for "Quiet after 11pm". This is not upheld AT ALL. We stayed for 10 nights, and after midnight there were loud voices (I'm talking screaming laughing and playfighting at the top of lungs) from both drunken adults and children, as well as music being played for 5 of those 10 nights. For a site that advertises itself as child friendly and offers kids activities this is a shambles. We could hear them across most of the upper campsite (pitches in the D area), not sure whether the same was true in the lower areas.

    What wasn't to like!
Upon arriving at our tent pitch we found all the pitches to be very well spaced out from each other. The site is huge with lots of fields, walks and trees for shade which we definitely needed!
Toilet and shower blocks were clean and regularly topped up with toilet roll.
I had read other reviews where people were complaining about flies (I didn't see many!) and wasps which yes there were alot around but what do you want them to do about that?? You're in a forest!!
Our family consists of 2 teen children and 1 pre schooler. The activities available were plentiful (e.g air riffles, climbing tower, cinema night, water sports such as cannooing and body boarding and a camp fire which our youngest absolutely loved!)
There is also a free swimming pool which is only open on the afternoon but be warned it is very cold 🥶
I do feel the bar needs an extra special mention...
The bar staff were friendly and they did give me cash back so that my son could play on the pool table. The food was exceptional value for money!! Big portions at reasonable prices but still very tasty.
Will definitely be recommending this place to friends and will visit again ourselves next year.

Not strictly a dislike. But wash blocks were basic and sometimes a bit mucky, thankfully mud rather than the other. No hair dryer sockets either. Apart from that, the blocks had plenty of hot water and never ran out of soap or loo roll.

Local attractions

With its tales of Robin Hood, ancient oaks, country houses and lush leafy landscape, Sherwood Forest has something to keep most sorts content. Clumber Park (15 minutes' drive) has long avenues of limes and open heath to stroll through, while over by the Major Oak (10 minutes) you can get acquainted with one of the area's stand-out trees before setting out on several waymarked hiking routes (maps available at the visitor centre next door).

Similarly close to base is Go Ape Sherwood (10 minutes), where a medley of segways and zipwires nicely complement any on-site activities you've got up to during your stay. Kids not quite old enough for that kind of activity? Fear not, as families with younger members will find plenty of age-appropriate entertainment at Wheelgate Waterpark (15 minutes) or Sundown Adventureland (20 minutes).

Spending time in town is also doable here, as Walesby Forest is just over half an hour from Lincoln's castle, cathedral and urban arboretum. Meanwhile, over in Newark (30 minutes), there's Civil War heritage, antiques shops and weekly markets in a handsome Georgian square, plus hovercraft tours if you fancy something a little different.
