Tall Trees Touring Park: Grass pitches on site

General

  • Spacious semi-rural site 10 minutes' drive from Mansfield
  • Less than half an hour's drive from Sherwood Forest and Clumber Park
  • Well-stocked carp fishing lake next to the site

A packing list for folk heading to Tall Trees Touring Park: comfy shoes, fishing kit, bus pass, kids, dogs (these last two only if you already have them – no need to acquire them specially).

This family-friendly and dog-welcoming park is in a semi-rural spot a 10-minute drive from the centre of Mansfield, ticking holiday boxes for easy access to both urban amenities and fresh-air attractions. The comfy shoes and/or bus pass are useful things to have with you as there’s a bus stop just outside the park for forays into town, and lots of useful bits and bobs within walking distance (a family-friendly pub, fast food outlets, supermarket and indoor play centre among them).

Those shoes may well also come in handy for lengthy rural rambles in the local area: around Sherwood Forest or Clumber Park, perhaps, or taking in the historic buildings of Hardwick Hall or Newstead Abbey. And the fishing kit? That’s for those who fancy heading to the lake just by the park for some quiet time gazing out over the Maun Valley Nature Reserve and (hopefully) catching some carp.

Facilities on site include a playground to keep the kids amused (and/or tire them out), a small library, tourist information point and well-kept toilet block with accessible facilities and baby changing.

The warm welcome and the size of the pitches.site spotless and quite at night. Lovely wardens. We have visited site before and shall be returning in the near future. I would recommend, bus stop at the entrance large Asda, farmfoods, tesco aldi.stop off on the way and you've no need to move. Great showers but push button, lovely washing up facility very clean. Level pitches.

We booked a 2 night tent pitch as it was the closest Available site to where we needed to be.

We would have been much better sleeping in the car at the side of the road than at this site.
When we arrived we were shown to our pitch, which was 40% dusty mud so we couldn’t put anything near that ground.

Once our tent was up and we were chilling out we noticed that 2 tents down were 2 couples, in their own tents that must know each other. Drinking, singing and just being loud. This continued all day from 12noon until gone 10pm until we asked them to keep it down. (Again a site rule)
One of the couples had an argument that went on over the space of a few hours. Swearing, pushing one another, crying. (Jeremy Kyle live 2022: open air performance)
Before speaking to them, the lady at the side of us said she went and stayed else where because she couldn’t sleep the night before as they came back to their tent at 1130pm from the local pub, drunk, shouting, one of them passed out and urinated & defecated in his own shorts (the reason she knew this is the lady was shouting at him about it until 3am)

During the almost 24hrs we were on site 3 different dogs approached us, one without an owner at all in sight. Even though when you arrive you get details stating dogs must be on leads at all times.

The line this morning was drawn whilst eating breakfast. I watched one of the men thrown a bucket of wee behind the tent followed by some water. (FYI it’s the heatwave weekend in the uk reaching 40 so the smell of wee isn’t the outdoor vibe we wanted) he looked around, super shady before he did it which caught my attention.

The tent pitches of VERY close together and I’m pretty sure that breaches some sort of laws as if there was a fire, 99% of the site would go up in flames.

The communal sinks were clean, the toilets were not, I didn’t even have a chance to have a shower so I couldn’t comment on the showers. The floors of the toilets were covered in water from the showers so it was slippy under foot.

The site is close to an Asda, Tesco, Costa which is good for convenience but that doesn’t matter to us, as we won’t ever bother coming back.

    That we were with friends.

    Disliked:

People that met us at the gate were a bit rude and short with us. Tents and caravans all far too close together, behind and to the side. Rules of the park not enforced with regards to dogs off leads, noise levels in the early hours of the morning with drunk people and also rubbish around the ‘partying tents’ left out all night. Dog walking area very poor.

    Clean showers and toilets.

    Disliked:

On the website the photos do not resemble the actual site, caravans positioned on top of each other, rather over crowded, with no privacy.
The showers were clean, but very small and lack of.
The very old and run down chalets at the forefront of the site are unsightly and not well maintained, which is an eyesore and I really feel for the people who have bought a pitch with the beautiful new chalets at the rear of the site around the pond.
The permanent "touring" caravans look run down and a sight for sore eyes.

While on my stay, where dogs are supposed to be kept on a lead, there was an incident in which one dog wasn't and started attacking another dog. Which was violent. The owner of the dog came to his dog and started beating it with his metal cane (walking stick) in front of many witnesses which included children.
I witnessed this and gave this poor excuse of a man a piece of my mind (domestic abuse and animal abuse I do not stand for). A dog is only but a dog and its our responsibility as dog owners to keep them under control, not in the way this irresponsible dog owner did.
I went straight to the wardens chalet to express my concern, firstly for the awful man and secondly next time that dog may go for a child!
All the warden said to me is "you need to ring the police, the police came only this week to the same man for the same problem". I said well you are the warden and its not my responsibility, you are only bothered about money due to the man being in one of the permanent "touring" caravans. You were happy enough to tell other caravans to keep the noise down after a certain time, so why not deal with this? This is why we have wardens on site?? Or so I thought.

From the manager...

Dear Madam, we are so sorry that you felt you had such a bad experience whilst staying with us.
the permanent touring caravans that you refer to are actually seasonal pitches, most of which are very well maintained.
yes some are rather older than others, but we like to pride ourselves on Not discriminating against people who do not have multi thousand pound budgets.
The size of our showers ( of which there are 5 in total )
are bigger than most peoples showers at home with the exception of 1 which is standard sized and as you are a slim lady i struggle to see the problem you had with there size!!
The incident you refer to with the dog, i can assure you the dog Was on its lead, however i cannot report to the police an incident that i did not witness and as you witnessed it yourself you should have informed the police as the lady earlier on in the week had done.
I can assure you the dog owner in question has been given a warning over his behaviour towards the animal and if i witness him using bad behaviour towards her i will report him myself.
Kind regards
The Warden (or not)

Local attractions

Take a spot at Tall Trees for all sorts of leisurely local walks: stride around Robin Hood’s old stomping ground, 450-acre Sherwood Forest, or take in one of the trails through the woods and around the lake at National Trust-owned Clumber Park (bike hire can be had here if you prefer to pedal). Both are less than half an hour’s drive from the park.

Creswell Crags, 20 minutes’ drive away, is an enclosed limestone gorge and cave system that’s home to the UK’s only known Ice Age cave art. There’s a great museum here, and rock art cave tours can be had in the spring and summer months.

If it’s historic buildings you’re after, head to 16th-century Hardwick Hall, or to medieval Newstead Abbey (home to a collection of objects belonging to former resident Lord Byron). Rufford Abbey Country Park is a good place for woodland walks around the abbey ruins.
