  • Rural site in the grounds of a B&B 10 minutes' drive from Brackley
  • Silverstone, Blenheim Palace and Oxford within a 45-minute drive
  • Pitches mown into wild grass with picnic tables and firepits
If you’re looking to take a break with a little group of your best pals or a family gang, the setup at Walltree House Camping may well suit you rather well. Circular pitches here are mown into the long wild grass in clusters of three, with each cluster provided with a shared picnic table and firepit for free use (just the spot for quiet morning coffees or sociable evenings toasting marshmallows while the sun sets…) All of this is in the grounds of a smart B&B in a traditional stone farmhouse, out in the Northamptonshire countryside 10 minutes’ drive from Brackley. Views all around are of open countryside, and it’s easy to get out for more rural exploring – you can pretty much venture straight from your tent out onto public footpaths leading through field and woods to classic villages and country pubs. Get in the driving seat instead and all sorts of day trips can be on the menu, including outings to Blenheim Palace, Silverstone and Stratford-upon-Avon. More intrepid visitors can sate their appetite for adventure at Hinton Airfield with skydiving, gliding and flying days, or challenge travelling companions at the paintballing centre – both are pretty much next door. Rather more relaxing times in mind? Take a wander around the grounds to look out for remnants of World War II outbuildings and air-raid shelters, or simply settle down to watch the gliders overhead. Amenities on site are simple but well thought out: the central block has hot showers, a washing-up area, electric points for gadget charging and a freezer to keep ice packs chilled.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked The camping area was very pleasant, I really liked how the pitches were enclosed by the letting the grass grow. The shower/toilet block looked unassuming but was excellent.

Disliked Check-in process. Apparently I should have received an SMS at time of booking and again the day of arrival, sadly neither arrived. This meant on arrival at 1700hr I had no idea where to pitch, and no staff anywhere. I called twice, and eventually I got a call back, but the person I spoke to wasn't particularly helpful and just said camp anywhere. Thankfully it was quiet, so it didn't matter. Not sure how happy I would be with this lacklustre customer service in a busy period.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked The stunning location, the neatness of the camp areas and the natural grass boarders. The gliders and planes to watch nearby. The facilities were so clean and had plenty of toiletries to use. Extremely pleased with the size of the pitched, plus the individual picnic benches and fire pits.

Disliked Nothing.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked We recently stayed at this campsite with friends and it was a lovely little find.

The campsite was very easy to find and well sign posted. The pitches were assigned to us before we arrived and we received documents with a map attached that showed the layout of the site, the pitches and the facilities.

It was very easy to find the pitches, and there was a parking area beside our pitch so we could unload before moving the cars to the carpark.

The pitches are a fair size. There were 3 tents camped on our one pitch and there was a fire pit and bench on each pitch.

The toilets and showers were very clean and well stocked with loo roll, soap and hand cream! The water was always hot.

The washing up area was great being under cover as we had some bad weather whilst we were there.

Access to charging facilities and a small freezer was very handy although other guests had spilt something in the freezer and made a mess and left it so it was dirty inside the freezer.

The bins are just up behind the toilet blocks so be aware of this and make sure you're rubbish bags aren't too heavy when you drag it up there.

Loved the mowed pitches and the rest left long and wild!

There were planes, gliders and parachutes going overhead constantly which was great to watch.

Campsite was small but very quiet and peaceful.

Disliked There was confusion with regards to firewood and when you could get it. The original text and link received a few months before we stayed, stated there was an honestly box and wood kept in the washing up area. There was nothing kept in the washing up area. You actually had to order online before 2pm each day which wasn't clear until we arrived and we had arrived just after 2pm, missing the deadline and meaning we had no wood at all for our first night. We spoke with other campers who had found the same thing so this was frustrating at first.

We stayed for 3 nights and didn't see any staff working there the whole time which sometimes is really lovely.

However, some campers did not respect the rules or other campers. A guy drove his 4x4 across every single pitch and across the long grass showing off when he had 2 young boys in his car. The car was left on the pitch the whole time they were there and every time they came and went, they drove the car over the grass. All vehicles were supposed to be kept in the car park and they left their car on the pitch with the engine running into the night.

Whilst this is not the fault of the campsite owners, this could have been deterred if there was more staff presence on site.

From the manager: Thank you for leaving a detailed review and we are thrilled to hear what you liked during stay.

During your stay the campsite is manned between core hours, in this time wood orders are delivered to the kitchen wash block as stated in the Check In details which have not changed since the start of the season. The facilities are also cleaned in this time keeping them maintained at our high standards.

If you had contacted us on arrival at 2pm, we could have arranged delivery of wood but sadly phoning at 9pm this was not possible. We encourage all guests to Pre-Order wood, we send a text message at time of booking and then a reminder message the day before arrival giving guests plenty of time to place their orders.

We are sorry other campers did not respect the rules, whilst onsite myself all cars were asked to move that failed to follow our T&C's.

As a reminder we are a Self Check In campsite, staff are always onsite and contactable during the day and in the evening in the event of an emergency.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Nice peaceful setting, until lights out time…
The site itself is set back from the house and has everything you need, the showers were hot and clean and the toilets and washing up facilities were well kept. The car park isn’t far from the site and not having the cars parked by the tents actually gave it a better feel. The ‘drop off’ zone isn’t far from the pitches and even though wheel barrows were supplied, we didn’t need them as our pitch was close enough to carry everything. Me and my boys loved our time here.

Disliked There were a couple or groups that ignored the lights out at 11pm rule as they didn’t have young kids. Plus there was a festival/event in one of the other fields on the site that was going on until gone midnight, which kept us awake….
None of this would have been a problem if I was visiting as an adult group or had teenagers, but as a young family (7 & 10 yo boys) this wasn’t ideal

From the manager: We are so sorry it was loud over the weekend. Bank holidays tend to be very busy with more family groups booking on to the campsite can often be louder. We try to split large groups off the campsite and host them on our event field to create some separation but either way everyone should follow our noise policy.

The event hosted in the neighboring field was larger and louder than planned, It should have been an exclusive hire of the whole site (including the campsite). Although the amplified music was turned off by the party fun and laughter did carry on late.

If you are willing to give us another chance we would love to welcome you back free of charge sometime before we close the campsite in October.

Mid week is of course quietest but lots of weekends are also quiet.

Thank you for your feedback, we will make it our policy to inform all guests before hand when it is very busy or an event is taking please.

Kind Regards,
Walltree House

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Such a peaceful, pretty little site with excellent facilities. Being next to the airfield was cool, watching the planes, gliders and skydivers. Too far for us on a regular basis but would definitely stay again if in the area.

Disliked I love sites that have a separate car park but more/better wheel barrows would have been good for moving the stuff around.

Local attractions

To explore a bit more of rural life, take a trip to the Waterfowl Sanctuary & Children’s Farm (25 minutes’ drive), where kids can look out for wildlife or settle in for some ‘cuddle time’ with small farm animals. If you’re more into investigating the dwellings of the smart set, plan outings to the likes of Stowe (20 minutes), Blenheim Palace (35 minutes) or the Althorp Estate (45 minutes). All three have some mighty fine architecture to see – and there’s plenty more of that on offer in nearby urban centres like Warwick (half an hour), Stratford-upon-Avon (40 minutes) and Oxford (45 minutes). Something a bit different? Perhaps you might like to feel the speed at Silverstone’s racing circuit (20 minutes) or give your credit card a workout in the designer outlets at Bicester Village (25 minutes).
