Walltree House Camping: Getting to grips with the firepit

General

  • Rural site in the grounds of a B&B 10 minutes' drive from Brackley
  • Silverstone, Blenheim Palace and Oxford within a 45-minute drive
  • Pitches mown into wild grass with picnic tables and firepits

Stays at Walltree House Camping are in the grounds of a smart B&B in a traditional stone farmhouse, out in the Northamptonshire countryside 10 minutes’ drive from Brackley.

Circular pitches here are mown into the long wild grass in clusters of three, with each cluster provided with a shared picnic table and firepit for free use (just the spot for quiet morning coffees and evenings toasting marshmallows while the sun sets…)

Views all around are of open countryside, and it’s easy to get out for more rural exploring – you can pretty much venture straight from your tent out onto public footpaths leading through field and woods to classic villages and country pubs. Get in the driving seat instead and all sorts of day trips can be on the menu, including outings to Blenheim Palace, Silverstone and Stratford-upon-Avon.

More intrepid visitors can sate their appetite for adventure at Hinton Airfield with skydiving, gliding and flying days, or at the paintballing centre – both are pretty much next door. Rather more relaxing times in mind? Take a wander around the grounds to look out for remnants of World War II outbuildings and air-raid shelters, or simply settle down to watch the gliders overhead.

Amenities on site are simple but well thought out: the central block has hot showers, a washing-up area, electric points for gadget charging and a freezer to keep ice packs chilled.

Please note

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, customers can amend their dates with the campground/park free of charge for all stays up to, and including, 10/31/2021.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Minimum spacing of 2 metres between pitches.

The set up if the camp was fantastic and the site was beautifully clean. The toilet / shower block was excellent and great facilities for a fire.

The weekend we picked was the weekend of the British Grand Prix so the airfield was being used for Park and ride rather than air activities (which meant the cafe was closed) but this didn't hinder our enjoyment of our stay

Thanks again and just one more thing to add - communication with the hosts was excellent and really pleasant.

Many thanks for your review Catherine, we're so happy to hear you enjoyed the site and had a lovely stay. Apologies the Skydive Centre cafe wasn't open that particular weekend, but if you come back always feel free to get in touch if you need recommendations. We hope to welcome you back soon, Rachael

Stayed here for the British GP. The whole lay out of this site was fantastic. With only 3 pitches to each field gives you plenty of room. The toilet/shower block was kept immaculate. Racheal was an absolute god send. Kept everyone up to date before we arrived and even during our stay. Would highly recommend this camp site.

How the pitches were set out, in their own individual areas. The site is very isolated. The areas kept wild for nature. The light aircraft taking off nearby with parachutists were interesting. Clean toilets and shower cubicles close-by. Fire pits a good idea. Use of wheelbarrows to transport belongings are a good idea. Friendly and helpful host. on arrival.

I was really debating whether or not to add this …07/12/2021

I was really debating whether or not to add this review, but that is only for selfish reasons. If more people find out about this amazing campsite then there is less chance I will be able to book on it again. The site is fabulous. Neat little pitch areas, all with a picnic table and fire pit provided (split wood and kindling has to be bought on site and is in plentiful supply through an honesty box system). Well laid out with most of the site left as long grass and wild flowers. They have also thougtfully incorporated some of the buildings that were already on the site, such as the bins area. When you are sat in your tent, you can feel llike you are the only ones on site. Showers and toilets and washing up are all in a newly constructed block and they are great, nice hot water and really clean.
For an added bonus, if you go on the right days, you will be treated to a lovely display of skydiving as the camp is right next to a small airfield. If the noise of small aircraft annoys you, then don't stay here as on a busy day they are taking off and landing every 15 minutes or so. It is a generally very quiet, peaceful site, so not one for lots of kids or groups that want loud music blaring.
Finally the hosts are brilliant. Their communication before arrival was spot on, answering my questions almost instantly, and they offered a great local pub for food as well.
I would say I highly recommend this place and you should all book there, but please don't as I want to be able to go back!

The location - a short walk to Brackley and a short drive to Banbury.
The airfield - really entertaining watching planes and gliders take off and land as well as watching people parachute jump.
The facilities - these were brilliant, very well cleaned and organised. There seemed to be the right amount for the number of people who were on site when we stayed though I can imagine that maybe a few more might be needed when fully booked.
The novelty - the pitch names were brilliant and really kept in with the theme of the airfield and the clover-shaped pitches worked really well.
Parking - the drop off point was in an ideal location and the wheel barrows on site were very helpful and the car parking wasn't too far away either. Not having the cars on the pitch was actually quite welcome as it made the site a lot safer and looking a lot tidier.
Camp fires - the fires pits for each pitch were very nice and the benches that were provided meant we didn't need to bring our own. The wood was reasonably priced and the fire starters and kindling was very generously given free of charge.
