  • Small site in the Peak District National Park
  • A short drive from the famed spa town of Buxton
  • A 40-minute drive from Alton Towers; donkey sanctuary next door
Peaceful times in the Peak District National Park are pretty much a given at scenic and small Greystones Nawab Camping and Touring, with its first-rate views over green countryside. But add in proximity (an easy seven miles) to the famed Peak District spa town of Buxton and it's fairly safe to say that holidays of a highly relaxed nature are very much on the cards… Those of a more active disposition (alongside spa days, this is also recommended around these parts) have hiking, walking, cycling, pony trekking, climbing and paragliding all close by, as well as a Go Ape centre within a mile for woodland antics. For family days, the caves of Poole’s Cavern are just outside Buxton, the Peak Wildlife Park is half an hour away and Alton Towers is within 40 minutes. A donkey sanctuary is next door to the site. Greystones Nawab is a grassy and peaceful site in a wildlife haven, and is motorcycle, family and dog friendly. It has showers, three toilets, a washing-up area and charging facilities. Wifi is available near the main house. Please note that the site keeps peacocks and rare-breed chickens.

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked: Great location, the site has potential to be good, however there were a few factors that let it down, the site needs to be better maintained, the toilet lids were off on 2 of the toilets making them challenging to flush and everything was extremely dirty like it hadn't been cleaned it weeks, understanding we've had a very wet winter but this does not leave an excuse for the toilets and washing up areas to be so dirty. We are used to basic but not quite the mess of the toilet and shower facilities, a real shame.

Disliked: Badly maintained

From the manager: Very sorry to read about your view Heavy rain last 3 weeks have created muddy field every where in the country also people going in out muddy with footwear but we still kept them clean and mopped up up to 4 times a day Also normal day we clean our toilets twice a day I have spent £20000 buying and installing the brand new facilities we had 12 pitches booked you are the only one who has complained yet when I asked if everything was OK you said great Sometimes i wonder why the odd person not being truthful some exaggerate and they twist I have spent £20000 on facilities For us to neglect them it does not make sense

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked: Leaving straight after pulling on site!!

Disliked: Couldn't use the site at all, other people were stuck in the mud with their vehicles, they were not happy with their Easter getaway at all. They told us the showers and toilets were beyond minging. The manager is very rude. We travelled alot of miles so I could visit my sick father over the Easter weekend, because there was not sufficient hard standing pitches we had to leave, my partner has been driving for 6hrs already at this point, the manager would not refund the full amount of a 3 night stay and electric which was £85. Times are hard for everyone, but it does not mean as a manager you can be rude and pointless blank refuse and refund!! DO NOT USE THIS CAMPSITE

On-site caravan (six person)

Liked: The location is incredible. The donkeys are great.

Disliked: Okay, I have thought about what to say here, I am usually never a person that leaves a negative review and I am aware that the manager has a habit of leaving aggressive and insulting replies to criticism. However, I can only describe this site as bizarre. We took a very last minute decision to leave our camper van at home and hire on site accommodation for the new year. We are seasoned campers and festival goers and so are our children, so we made the most of it, but other families would potentially have been appalled at the conditions of this campsite. The showering facilities do not work, and are permanently locked. The toilets do not work. There’s never toilet roll or hand washing equipment and they are filthy. The on site caravans are run down and dirty. The site is dangerous for small children. The Manager is unwelcoming and makes you feel like you are in the way. There is a system of having to check in, but you can’t get hold of anyone and then when you do you feel like you are bothering them. The manager spoke to his member of staff (perhaps a family member?) so poorly in front of me that I felt sad for him. On reflection, and after reading every other review carefully, I think a few things need to happen here. A). The manager needs to change the website and be open and honest about what he is offering. This is a stop off suitable for backpackers or couples. We have stayed at many sites where there is literally just a porta loo and been absolutely fine with it, but that has to be made absolutely clear. B). The check in system has to change. We have also stayed at many sites where the check in system is just a chalk board. (Keysafes for pods or yurts etc) This works fine and you are not left in awkward situations with staff members who are resentful of being disturbed. C). The caravans either need to go, or there needs to be a serious rethink. This is not a holiday accommodation fit for purpose. They are poorly maintained, dated and dirty. No one keeps on top of making sure you have gas or water and it is unclear how you are meant to manage this situation on your own. Looking at the other reviews, I am fully expecting a reply essentially suggesting that if you camp, or tour, you are to expect dangerous and dirty facilities. I am going to get ahead of that and say, if you take on the responsibility of running a campsite, especially to the level you advertise this one to, you should be maintaining it. I would suggest closing down for the next few months and addressing the urgent maintenance work that needs doing, and reopening for the spring when things are being managed properly.

From the manager: sorry about how you feel extreme weather conditions 3 major storms in less then 2 weeks that created power cuts also no wifi due to extreme weather check in issue clearly says on gate to ring for your pitch no but no signal no communication due to weather we have installed brand new toilets and showers cost over £20000 our site is tidy you did not even knew how to turn water and gas on in the caravan we assisted you and we were polite and respectful you left the caravan carpets muddy and dirty we provided you with brand new blankets you have deliberately thrown away covers even when my son asked you to save them you say you read past reviews we also get the odd times some people we cannot please we advertise small basic camp site what ever happened wild camping in the country closing down for few months for maintenance work for muddy fields due to weather

Local attractions

Buxton (10 to 15 minutes' drive away) has plenty to do for all ages, including tours around its Georgian architecture and ambles around the award-winning Pavilion gardens. Shopping and nightlife are most plentiful around George Street, the Quadrant and Cavendish Arcade; for kids of a small size, a soft play centre is in town. Kids of all sizes should like going underground at Buxton's Poole's Cavern, a limestone cave surrounded by Buxton Country Park. Take a guided tour among the huge chambers of the caves to hear tales of the Stone Age people, Roman soldiers and medieval outlaws who used them; after that and above ground, there are woodland trails to wander, rabbits and woodpeckers to spot and – possibly of more interest to fatigued grownups – a café serving drinks and hot snacks. Another spa town – again possibly of more interest to fatigued grownups – is at Matlock Bath, 20 minutes' drive away.
