  • Smart glass-fronted wooden lodges on the banks of Lake Blaguš
  • Around a half-hour drive from Ptuj and the Maribor wineries
  • Forest setting for walks, lake swims, bike trails and fishing
As if you needed a reason to justify a bit of time spent in this rather gorgeous part of eastern Slovenia, the team at Forest Glamping Resort Blaguš would like to remind you that scientists have proven that time spent in a forest does wonders for stress hormone levels, blood pressure and mental health in general. Armed with such evidence, set forth to this fab spot on the banks of Lake Blaguš, less than five minutes’ drive from the Pomurska village of Sveti Jurij ob Ščavnici. Arriving here is a bit like stepping into a fairytale… the forest is a calm place full of ferns, mists and bird calls, and you can easily slope off to the lake for a swim, a waterside walk or a spot of fishing. And to top it all off, that real fairytale classic: a shoemaker tucked away in the forest (where you can join a workshop to learn about the art of the cobbler). There are plenty of ways to make the most of this splendid setting: hire bikes or head out on foot to tackle the woodland trails, take a picnic out onto the pier, or pick a book from the forest library and settle in a hammock. Or take it all in from inside your comfy lodge: each one has been set up right by the lake, with a huge glass window to keep the views coming even when you’re under cover. Heading back out into the wider world might seem like something of a wrench but it’s worth doing from time to time, particularly if you head to pretty Ptuj or the wineries around Maribor, about half an hour away by car.

Local attractions

Picnics back in your little forest retreat are a fine idea, and even better if you supply a bottle of local wine to accompany your meal. Pick one (or some?) up as you travel around the wineries in the Maribor area, half an hour away by car. They’ve been making wine here for yonks, as shown by the city being home to the world’s oldest vine (it has its own museum, and the city’s also got a fine castle and pretty streets too). Equally scenic and worthy of a stop is Ptuj (half an hour’s drive), with a cobbled medieval centre and fine castle on the banks of the Drava River. Prefer to stick to Slovenia’s stunning natural areas? Take your pick from plenty of walks and bike rides around the site or set forth to take in the restored Negova Castle (15 minutes) and the beekeeping museum in Ljutomer (25 minutes) or to meet the beasts at Sikalu Zoo (15 minutes).
