  • Namur family campsite with spectacular Ardennes Forest views
  • A 15-minute drive to the Euro Space Center and Castle of the Counts
  • Pool, café, grocery shop and entertainment in high season
Set amid Namur woodland on the southern slope of a hill edging the Ardennes Forest, Camping Le Roptai is surrounded by spectacular valleys, forests and rivers. That means plenty of chances for hikers, cyclists and mountain bikers to get out under their own steam to explore the region, while sightseeing families discover pretty Walloon cities like Dinant within half an hour’s drive. If you prefer to stay put on your woodland pitch, you won’t be short of stuff to do on site. The swimming pool is the focus of daily life in July and August, and there are other sports facilities including table tennis and pétanque, and a playing field for friendly football or volleyball matches. A couple of play areas with slides and swings take care of the younger guests, and the campsite’s entertainment team organises treasure hunts and hide-and-seek games in high season. The team also holds laser tag, archery and abseiling sessions – everyone welcome – as well as walking tours in the Ardennes countryside. If they sound too sedate, hire mountain bikes or book kayak trips along the Lesse River from reception – where there’s also lots of useful tourist information. Cosy La Cafet café is open for snacks, pizzas and organic drinks in July and August and on holiday weekends, and you can order breakfast pastries the night before from reception. The small neighbouring shop has plenty of fresh food, toiletries and sweets to treat well-behaved kids.

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: Natural setup and lots of trees. many people seem to do long term camping here. i would recommend the camp area on the opposite side of the road as that area is quieter , greener and spacious (although with less electrical connections). i liked the playing area with volleyball and football courts.

Disliked: Area with view is a little crowded. the view is not that remarkable. i liked the forested area instead.

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: Decent site with great views. There were loads of pitches still - although this was off season - not many pitches are level though! I was there in off season, so it was quiet, but plenty of families and young kids giving the place a bit of life. They were filling the pool for the big kick of at the start of July - take note! Very multi-lingual reception host - very efficient and helpful. There was a part of the site across the road, but it seemed quite remote from the rest of the site - you may like this? Great wifi at tent too, despite site saying it wasn't;t available. Maybe once it's busier not everyone can access? Also excellent access to Dinant - well worth a visit!

Disliked: Small things: you have to pay extra for shower and hot water - which seemed petty to me. Also, you had to collect breads / pastries from reception, which didn't open until 9am (note that for some, reception is quite a walk).

From the manager: Thank you for your reaction! We only wanted to correct that hot water at the sinks in the buildings and also for the dishes is for free. You only have to pay for a hot shower € 1,30 per token. In low and mid season the sale of bread starts at 9AM, in the high season it starts at 8.30AM

Local attractions

If you’re travelling as a family, you may well find the kids demanding a visit to the Euro Space Center (15 minutes’ drive) for 4D planetarium films and free-fall slides. You may not be able to resist a visit to Doneu Ostrich Farm (20 minutes) either, for the chance to meet the birds and their cute chicks, while the limestones cave formations at the Domain of the Caves of Han (five minutes) are likely to captivate most kids too. To see how life in the Ardennes was under Roman occupation, travel 2000 years back in time at Malagne - Archéoparc de Rochefort (15 minutes) to tour the archaeological remains and reconstructed village. Another open-air museum is the Musée de la Vie Rurale en Wallonie (25 minutes), with half-timbered cottages, a traditional church and old farming implements on display. For more recent heritage, see the atmospheric ruins of the medieval Castle of the Counts behind the impressive present-day Château Comtal de Rochefort (15 minutes), and explore the formal gardens and room laid out in period style at moated Château de Lavaux-Sainte-Anne (five minutes).
