General

  • Small dog-friendly and family-run farm site in the South Wales Valleys
  • A 15-minute drive from Sirhowy Valley Walk; 25 minutes to the Big Pit
  • Takeaway café with local Welsh produce for barbecues and a play field

In the South Wales Valleys, things like castles, country parks, coal mines (and of course, valleys) are never too far off. Among those splendid sloping landscapes is Fferm Gelli Camping, a family-run and Welsh-themed site with a takeaway café that sells locally sourced Welsh meats ready for your barbecues…

This small site is part of a Welsh farm with horses, chickens, goats and a sheep. The owners live on site and they’re fans of dogs, which is why your four-legged friend is also welcome to come and stay. With a seating area, user-friendly wet room and a children’s play field, families and dog owners should feel right at home.

Equipment hire is also available at the site for things like tents, firepits and airbeds. Outside of the site, though, things are just as splendid… a few minutes' walk will get you to the local Pen-Y-Fan Pond, a green space that hosts activities such as trout fishing, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding.

Blackwood town centre is just 10 minutes’ drive away for supermarkets, a cinema, leisure centre, takeaways and a golf course. If you'd also like to try horse riding, there’s an equestrian centre 10 minutes’ drive away.

Of course, this location is within reach of many more cool locations, including multiple castles within 25 to 45 minutes’ drive of the site. There are lots of mountain biking trails around too, such as Tirpentwys Mountain Bike Trails 15 minutes’ drive away. Cardiff, the Welsh capital, is 45 minutes’ drive to the south and the Brecon Beacons National Park is 10 miles to the north for all things outdoorsy.

Please note

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Reception is unmanned after 5 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

A cable measuring at least 10 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Lovely site right next to goats and then horses across the way. Friendly owner came to say hi and check on us in the evening. Bathrooms lovely and spacious and clean, great for taking kids in with you. Nice communal fire pit in middle of field.

    Disliked:

Bathrooms were a bit of a trek and the wood boards got slippy when wet, daughter fell on them. But on the other hand the cafe guests aren't overlooked the tents as a result.

flat pitches , clean and tidy showers, looked to be a great site for families especially with the ride on tractors , the goat pen inside the tent pitch field was a lovely touch

    Disliked:

having Charging facilities listed on the facilities list but then being told i had to pay extra to charge my mobile ( it was needed to check the cycle route back to newport)
I'd be happy to pay extra if it was pre mentioned as other sites do ,
and when using the showers you do feel quite exposed and the que for the cafe is going past the shower doors.

From the manager...

Hello Jake

Thank you for leaving a review.

Please accept our apologies for the confusion on the charging facilities- It's only now you've mentioned it that we realised we had charging listed as a facility. We have now removed this.

We've had many campers book a basic pitch then ask to use our electric in the office for free hence us putting a stop to people charging phones etc on us.

Thank you for highlighting this as it will stop future confusion.

Our stay at Fferm Gelli was amazing! When I booked I made a mistake with the dates and called the owner (Kayleigh) that promptly resolved. We arrived in the evening and had no problem to find our pitch number and pitch up or tent. The place is extremely organized and clean. The animals looks well cared. There are mini trucks for the kids to play and as we traveled with a 4 years old boy, that was a good idea to keep him entertained. The café shop offers a variety of food and all delicious.

Lovely campsite , different animals to see, horses , chickens, goats and a pony.
My son loved to see them , a large playing field to play football and run around in.
We stayed in a pod it was nice and warm with the heater provided , a nice cafe we had lunch in next to the chickens and the pony.

    Disliked:

The only thing I didn’t like was we had the pod door open as it was to hot with it closed , each time someone walked past they would have a look in as this is where the goats are so people not staying at the camp can also go to look at them, not the camps fault just made us feel uncomfortable at times.

Local attractions

A castle visit is a must, but which will it be? Caerphilly Castle (25 minutes’ drive) is a medieval castle, Castell Coch (35 minutes) is from the 19th century and Cardiff Castle (45 minutes) has over 2000 years of history for you to uncover.

With the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park around 20 minutes’ drive to the north, mountain hikes are always an option. Otherwise, the Sirhowy Valley Walk (around 15 minutes) is certainly spectacular. The long-distance hike has miles of walking over farms, woodlands and mountain ridges in the Valleys landscapes, beginning or ending in Newport.

You may want to learn a little about the history of Welsh mining while you’re around these parts. If so, the Big Pit National Coal Museum (25 minutes) runs tours around a Welsh coal mine. Perhaps a visit to a cider farm too? Hallets Cider (15 minutes) runs cider tasting tours and food pairing sessions.

Must see

  • Big Pit: National Coal Museum (9.0 kilometres)
  • Blaenavon World Heritage Centre & Tourist Information Centre (9.7 kilometres)
  • Blaenavon Ironworks (10.0 kilometres)
