Hendre Hall Holiday Park

General

  • Family holiday park in the grounds of an 18th-century listed building
  • Aberdyfi 20 minutes' drive; half an hour from Barmouth
  • Play area and laundry facilities; pub and station five minutes' walk

Hendre Hall Holiday Park is located in the grounds of Hendre Hall, an attractive listed building that dates back to the 18th century. Sitting between the Cardigan Bay coast and the gorgeous countryside of the Cambrian mountains in Snowdonia National Park, this spot is a great place to explore the rugged peaks and green hills that make this landscape one of the prettiest in Britain.

Have your camera at the ready to capture some of the sunsets that light up the sky in the west; you may also want to take photos of the food, the hills and the many miles of spectacular coastline, including views over to the Llŷn Peninsula, Snowdon, Barmouth and Bardsey Island. With a bit of luck, you may see the dolphins too.

The nearest beach is about a five-minute walk away along a footpath that is directly accessible from site. Llwyngwril's other amenities, like a friendly local pub, a railway station and a small shop, can all be strolled to in about five.

There are solid on-site facilities at Hendre Hall Holiday Park too, including toilets, showers, a wash house with laundry facilities and a recycling area. Kids are very welcome here and have a playground all to themselves; four-legged friends are allowed to come and explore the area by your side too. Hendre Hall Caravan Site is also home to pygmy goats and chickens which can be visited and fed.

Please note that this is a family site and that quiet hours are in force after 10.30pm.

Hendre Hall is very possibly our favourite site to pitch-up at (VW Transporter campervan). The location is magnificent, with sea views ahead and tall hills behind. Owners and hosts, Sandie and Meirion are friendly and helpful. Hendre Hall isn't over-developed but offers pitches for camping, glamping, caravans and motorhomes.

There is a path offering direct access to Llwyngwril beach, which is the perfect place to exercise the dogs or to sit and watch the sun set over Cardigan Bay.

The village itself has a lovely local pub, small shop and railway station (unfortunately not operating for much of Autumn 2022, so check first if you want to enjoy the Cambrian coastal line). Easy access by road offers great day trips to Barmouth, Tywyn and Aberdyfi.

Facilities are well-constructed, clean and maintained. Washing-up is indoors and there's plenty of hot water. There is a communal fridge, plus coin-operated washing machine and tumble dryer. The showers are as hot as you like and £1 gives 15 minutes run time.

Meirion told me that there are plans next year to develop the house to include a farm shop, coffee shop and further accommodation. This, in my opinion, will only add to the attraction of Hendre Hall and we are already planning another stay.

    Disliked:

As most reviews mention, toilet and shower facilities are limited (two of each). When we visited in September 2022, the site was quiet and queuing was not necessary. If another block could be added (of the same high quality), this would be a welcome addition to the site.

Friendly owner. Field with goats next to camping field. Park next door via main road.

    Disliked:

Toilet and wash facilities were not great, 1 toilet for each sex and were not the cleanest. No facility to dry hands.
Small site. Was very quiet when we arrived. Didn't stay at site as it wasn't for us. Expensive for what you get. Only given a 2 star as didn't stay there for long.

From the manager...

Hi Leanne, sorry to hear the facilities hadn’t been cleaned. We have plans to build a larger/new toilet/shower block for next summer 🤞🏼

Local attractions

When you set down here, ready your swimming gear, as Bala Lake (40 minutes’ drive) is a fine setting for sailing, wild swimming and canoeing or hiking the hills on all sides. The kit will come in handy for exploring the Barmouth (30 minutes) seafront by paddleboard, too, or windsurfing and kitesurfing in Aberdyfi (20 minutes).

If more active pursuits are what you like your holidays chock-full with, Dolgellau (20 minutes) is a good point of departure for hikes, mountain biking or climbing crags. More beach paddles, perhaps, in Tywyn (15 minutes), followed by a traditional butter bun?

Perhaps your preferred way of taking in views is from a cosy seat on an old steam train, such as the Fairbourne Railway (five minutes). It’s one of several historical places you might want to seek out. These include the Dyffryn Ardudwy burial chamber (40 minutes) and the Italian-style Portmeirion (50 minutes) village. Plas Brondanw Gardens (50 minutes) was designed by the same architect that created Portmeirion.

Must see

  • Rheilffordd Talyllyn Railway (9.6 kilometres)
  • MOMA Wales - Y Tabernacl (17.8 kilometres)
  • CADW - Harlech Castle (21.2 kilometres)

National Trust
