  • Family-friendly campsite adjoining a Winfrith Newburgh pub in Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive to the Jurassic Coast, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door
  • Showers and loos on site; delicious food and drink in The Red Lion pub
Set in the middle of lovely Dorset countryside and on the outskirts of the peaceful village of Winfrith Newburgh, The Red Lion is a family-run pub with a namesake campsite on the extensive field to its rear. There’s easy access by car to dump your gear at the spacious pitches – most are sheltered by mature trees – and modern facilities on-site include showers, mains water, toilets and a washing-up area. The adjoining pub is open throughout the year: winter brings warming log fires while summer invites alfresco dining in the beer garden – and whenever you visit, you’re assured of a constant supply of delicious food as well as award-winning West Country ales and ciders. As on-site guests, you get 10% off your food bill using the voucher given to you at check-in. Luckily the site is dog-friendly as it’s a great base for soaking up Dorset’s rural vibe on quiet walks across the downs. If you’d like to spark up your barbecue while you’re there, there’s a small store in the village; otherwise, do a bigger stock up in Dorchester (15 minutes).

What customers say

Great location near attractions and a pub with good grub. Staff are sound, facilities spotless, pitches level. Some noted road noise and shower bother, but it's sorted now.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Size of pitch, location, site is attached to a pub which had fantastic food, staff were really friendly and gave excellent customer service.
Very dog friendly
Excellent location for visiting purbecks and South Dorset

Disliked Not enough toilets for amount of people staying on site.
Road noise, but quite quiet through the night
Whilst having a very good full English breakfast, the elderly Idiot complaining about not having mushrooms on his wife’s breakfast and trying to bully the girl into a full refund for room and breakfast even though she had apologised several times and gave excellent customer service and reasons as to why she couldn’t do a refund, complete idiot!!!

Electric gravel and sand touring pitch

Liked Beautiful pub, very welcoming staff. Nice big open pitches. I only stayed 1 night so it fine for what I needed.

Disliked The only dislike was the toilets, showers and washing up facilities. Not enough for how many pitches. Also an update to a proper building for facilities would massively improve this site. Would be a 10/10

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked 10min drive to durdle door, pub's right on the spot, decent pitch price, not too far from the town, hot showers, decent toilets with hand basin and light, hot showers, clean field, 10% discount in the pub

Disliked Light comes on in the toilets when it's way too dark, staff not replenishing TP, need to use a code every time you want to use a toilet, code given only for one of two toilets, could do with 3 toilets rather than 2. "available/ocupied" sliders are manual which are a bad idea because some people don't use them at all, some change them to "occupied" and leave them changed which end up being completely pointless. some shower/toilet doors won't shut properly. not allowed to have two tents per pitch even if they are small two/three person tents, main road very close (can hear cars/bikes in the early morning). no fire wood for sale on site, check out time (10am) could be later since check in is only 2pm. who needs 4 hours to "prepare" a bit of grass? 🤣 oh, and there is just a tap for doing your dishes, no sink, just a single tap with water running on the gravel.

Liked Staff were really friendly, pub had a lovely atmosphere,

Disliked New shower/ toilets don't stay locked when you using them , locks need to be better

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time and trouble to leave a review and we are pleased you enjoyed our pub. In terms of the doors they are wooden and therefore do tend to swell and contract with the weather. The bolt to lock the door has been replaced. We look forward to welcoming you again in the future.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time and trouble to provide feedback. Like all campsites there are periods when the toilets and showers become busy, we do invite campsite users to use the pub toilets when they are open during these busy periods. We are glad you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Local attractions

You won’t have to wander very far afield to sample the best of Dorset attractions; The Red Lion is only 10 minutes’ drive from Man O’War Beach on the Jurassic Coast, the spectacular Durdle Door sea arch and romantic, almost circular Lulworth Cove. The kids will relish the chance to encounter the primates at Monkey World - Ape Rescue Centre (yes, also 10 minutes away), or see the nesting mute swans at Abbotsbury Swannery (40 minutes). Weymouth (25 minutes), its sandy beaches and Sea Life Adventure Park is also a good bet for keeping youngsters happy. Plus, the ever-popular Tank Museum in Bovington (10 minutes) is within striking distance. Take the Dorset air as you scramble up to Osmington White Horse (15 minutes), cut into the limestone landscape in 1808, for views over the downs to the English Channel. There are more wonderful vistas to be had from hilltop Corfe Castle (also 15 minutes), and if any cobwebs still need blowing away, head to Chesil Beach (half an hour) for a blustery walk along the shingle.
