Grass pitches with woodland views
Firepits and barbecues allowed off the ground

  • Simple family-run site on a smallholding at Buckland Newton in Dorset
  • Cerne Giant 10 minutes’ drive and Weymouth beaches 35 minutes
  • Pitch up anywhere; livestock encounters available; dog walks from site
Dorset bound and looking for a peaceful rural hideaway away from the crowds? This back-to-basics, family-run site is tucked away on a working smallholding within 20 minutes' drive of historic Dorchester and 35 minutes from Weymouth beaches. Stays are on a splendid, gently sloping field with woodland edges and views across the hills. This is the sort of place where birdsong is the wake-up call, countryside walks get you to a cosy village pub and nights are peaceful, underneath dark (and often starry) skies. Dogs are welcome, by the way, and you can keep their exercise regime up with scenic countryside strolls from your pitch; they can also accompany you to the pub in Buckland Newton (20 minutes’ walk), where you can get a decent pint of Dorset cider. And if the kids (or indeed you) would like to meet the resident goats, sheep and hens (fresh eggs are often available for breakfast fry-ups), please ask the site owners. Simple facilities on site include a fresh water tap, waste disposal facilities and plenty of space to stretch out and relax – the well-kept camping fields have no designated pitches so you can set up wherever you fancy. The owners kindly ask that you respect the land as it’s on a working smallholding; make the most of your stay but leave no trace. Please leave the site as you found – and that includes only having campfires and barbecues that are off the ground so the grass doesn’t get damaged.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Had a lovely 1 night stay to take our dog on her first camping trip before going away for a week. The weather was awful and we had the option to reschedule but we braved the wind and had a great evening at this brilliant little campsite. We did a couple of nice walks and enjoyed an evening sat out in a very peaceful area. We are very local so will definitely look at staying here again!

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked I had a lovely overnight stay with my children, while the weather wasn't fantastic it didn't stop us enjoying our time, the children loved the goats and they even had the chance this morning to help feed them, check for eggs and meet the sheep. Lovely views and walks around the area. A short walk to the village shop, recreation ground and pu. The owners are so welcoming and friendly, couldn't do anything more for you. Toilet and shower facilities are great. The fact you can have a fire pit and they can be provided if you don't have one ( or forget to pack it ) like we did is great. Also the unexpected visit of deer in the evening was lovely. We will definitely be returning, such a little gem of a site.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review. We’re really glad you and the children enjoyed your stay, even with the not‑so‑perfect weather. It was a pleasure having you all here, and the animals definitely enjoyed the extra attention especially at feeding time. We’re lucky to have such beautiful views and wildlife around us, so I’m thrilled you got to see the deer as well.

I’m also really pleased you found the facilities comfortable and enjoyed using the fire pit — it’s one of our favourite parts of camping too.

we’d love to welcome you back again soon. Thank you for supporting our little pop‑up site.

Liked Such a great place! Received a lovely welcoming message from the owner at the time of my booking explaining everything about the site. Shower/toilet block was spotless. Chemical waste disposal and although at the time the council hadn’t delivered their bins the owner was more than happy to take my waste and sort it out herself. Run by a lovely family who have a very laid back ethos and was great to see the goats/sheep and their beautiful cat! Great pub just 15min walk through the fields and small village shop 5mins walk down the road. Will definitely be back!

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Very peaceful and spacious, with nice views, with a reasonable pub a mile away. Dark skies and quiet as well. Friendly and very helpful host, and goats too (but not as helpful as host!) Clean and fragrant (in a nice way!) portaloos.

Disliked Could do with a sink for washing dishes, ideally with hot water. No showers or washing facilities either, but it's early days and I'm sure this will happen in the future.

The whole field is on a slight slope but not so much as to cause us trouble.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your thoughtful and detailed review! 😊 I'm really glad you enjoyed the peaceful setting, the views, and of course the company of our cheeky goats. It’s lovely to hear the dark skies and quiet made for a relaxing stay, and I’m especially pleased the portaloos passed the fragrance test!

Your feedback about washing-up and shower facilities is very much appreciated and improvements like these are definitely on the horizon for next season. Thanks again for your kind words and helpful suggestions. Hope to welcome you back soon for an even better experience! 🌿⛺
