  • Well-established family-friendly site in the centre of Croyde
  • A short walk from Croyde's beach, surf schools, shops and pubs
  • Peaceful site with large, level pitches and communal freezers
Ah, Croyde – the mere mention of this lovely little village is liable to perk up the ears of surfer types, who’ve no doubt heard about the splendid waves around this corner of Devon. Those same surfer types (along with those who’d like to learn the art of standing up on water, and anyone else that’s keen on the coast) should also find their ears pricking up at the offerings of Camping @ Croyde Bay, a friendly site in the village centre. The waters at Croyde beach, around 400 metres away, are famed as being fab for both keen surfers and novices, and that also makes this area a top pick for family holidays. The well-established site is a family-friendly place too, in a spot that’s easily walkable to the village’s shops and pubs but quiet enough for a good night’s kip. Facilities include purpose-built toilets and showers, and a much-loved ladies' dressing room with a mirror, power points, hair dryers and hair straighteners. There is an additional hot outdoor shower for sandy wetsuits, a drying area, plenty of fresh drinking water and a washing-up area for dealing with dishes. Guests can also use the communal freezers and mobile phone charging points. As for the local area, it’s not all about Croyde: Putsborough beach (another corker) is also within walking distance, and it’s a couple of miles to Saunton for more sandy times and a gorgeous golf course.

Electric optional grass campervan, trailer tent or tent pitch

Liked: Campsite very clean, well looked after and in a great location. Lots of bunnies in the site which was lovely. Short walk to basically all of Croyde.

Disliked: We missed the check in time by 45mins due to a flat tire we did everything in our power to inform Stu called him at 4pm to let him know we would be late and later gave an exact time at 7:30pm but still denied us access to the campsite. Found out we could have just been given a code to access the camp site so the reason of the owner (Stu) having to work late made no sense. And then the issue was blowing up are airbed late would annoy other campers. (Which we understand) but you have 24hour access by car and drive past people’s tents our airbed would have been blown up in an insulated van no later than 10pm. Booked a more accommodating camp site down the road. Stu refused a refund saying he would have lost money but the campsite was at 20% capacity if that so we hadn’t taken anyone else’s space, would have just lost the money that we have now lost. Did offer us a free late check out but this can be bought for £3. Very much put a big downer on our stay when simply being more understanding and helpful would have solved this. On the phone we were told to just “book a hotel”.

From the manager: Dear guests,
I thank you for your 8/10 review. I must clarify for the reader exactly what happened. You informed me at 7.30 pm that you could not make it until 10.15 pm at the earliest, which, as you were already aware, was not acceptable to us. We have to be strict about this for the safety and comfort of our sleeping guests. We have in the past had complaints where late arrivals have had headlights and electric pumps on at 10 or 11 pm, which is why we now have a strict cut-off time. I explained all this and suggested staying the night at a Travelodge en route and arriving early the next morning. I also included a full day pass until 6 pm on departure day as some compensation (worth £10). You are correct that once guests have checked in, they have the gate code, but we need to check people in at a sensible time of night and show them where everything is on site. Guests are asked not to drive around at night and are generally very respectful of sleeping campers. I assure you, I didn't deny you a 10.30 pm arrival because I wanted to go home early. On the contrary, I work (if I can call it that) 14 hours a day, 7 days a week, to provide safety and comfort for my guests.
Based on your review and our interactions, I know you liked us and the campsite. It's a shame you left Portsmouth so late on a Friday afternoon.
As you told me at checkout, had you set off as planned, instead of going kite surfing, you would have arrived in plenty of time, and things would have been different. Of course, I hope you come back another time, and my offer of compensation stands. I understand that traffic can cause problems on a Friday night when coming from so far away, but a last-minute kite surfing lesson is a bit much even for a softy like me.

Electric optional grass campervan or trailer tent pitch (maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Fantastic campsite, lovely and quiet even on a bank holiday. Shower and toilet block were immaculate and very well built, great water pressure. The free wifi was a nice touch and the signal was perfect. Also in a great location, only a short walk to Croyde Beach and the costal path. I have recommended it to my friends and will definitely come back again.

Electric optional grass campervan or trailer tent pitch (maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Small site, like the ladies wash and shower blocks.
Close to the beach and the village.
Didn't have to drive anywhere once we were there.

Disliked: Only dislike was the cold water for washing up, but this was a trial for the owners. Had to boil water to take to wash up.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the great review. As noted, we are doing a trial at the moment. The outside shower/wetsuit wash and washup sinks have cold water to dramatically reduce our carbon footprint. We do have 8 x hot showers indoors. But as this is a trial, I am grateful for the feedback. If it becomes a deal breaker for guests we will reconsider hot water to the washup sinks. Stu.

Electric optional grass campervan or trailer tent pitch (maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Spacious pitches, thoughtful positioning of new arrivals as to ensure everyone was spread out. Clean and well maintained. Level pitches with electric was fantastic, they even had spare extension cables and leveling blocks if you needed them. Toilets and showers were basic but always clean, so wouldn’t ask for more. Wetsuit drying area, outside hot tap for sandy feet, hair dryers/strainers in the women’s changing room, fresh coffee/tea/hot chocolate available and communal freezers were a great touch. Location was excellent, 5 min walk or less to pubs shops and restaurants, 10-15 minutes to the north end of the beach. Would definitely stay again. Beautiful views. Simple recycling points.

Disliked: Road noise was quite loud when on the top pitch, however, this couldn’t be helped, and the views from this area made up for it! Could have a baby changing facility as there wasn’t one. Anti-slip mats were needed in the shower when trying to shower with a baby

From the manager: Thank you for your ten out of ten review. For clarification; We are, a level 10 min walk to the beach. We are fortunate to have a pavement beside the main road and an off-road footpath is also nearby, from the centre of the beach to the centre of the village. I hope to see you again soon. Stu.

Local attractions

So… the beach? Thought so. Croyde’s one of those fab places that’s equally good for a paddle, a swim or a surf. Experienced boarding types can usually find some good waves down here, and there are shallower sections where newbies can find their feet (with the help of one of the village’s surf schools, ideally). For a rest from the waves, take a walk out to Baggy Point (about 45 minutes on foot), join a game at the village’s beach volleyball school or drive for 10 minutes to the rural pursuits at Borough Farm Sheepdog and Falconry Displays. Alternatively, make it all about the sea with a coasteering day from Croyde, a ride on the beach at Woolacombe or a sea safari from Ilfracombe (both 15 minutes’ drive). The beaches at Putsborough and Saunton Sands are both about five minutes’ drive away and there are some cracking walks to be had on the South West Coast Path around here too.
