Woodland camping

  • Rural dog-friendly adults-only site in Sherfield English
  • Half an hour's drive from Salisbury and 10 minutes from the New Forest
  • Cosy country pub within a 15-minute stroll
To Hampshire for a holiday in a rather relaxed, kid-free spot? Meadow Tree Farm is a nearly-wild site with basic facilities on a working beef farm. Friendly and adults-only, it is spread over 21 acres on the edge of the village of Sherfield English, about 10 minutes' drive from Romsey. There's plenty of space for you (and any doggie companions you may have brought along) to chill out on site and, most importantly, a café a short walk away. Fishing lakes are next door and there are fab trails for ramblers and cyclists a few miles away in the New Forest National Park. Back at base, the laidback vibe is preserved by keeping facilities to a minimum, but the essentials are all in place, including toilets, showers and a washing-up area. Sounds good? You'd better be quick: Meadow Tree Farm is a pop-up site that's only open for a limited amount of time each year.

Electric forest floor tent pitch (woodland)

Liked Woodland area was lovely, good for a large group

Disliked The owners made no attempt to inform us that the area had been under a fire ban for several weeks, assuming “it was obvious”. We had travelled a long way for the trip so we had no idea, and this meant we had to go to Tesco and buy gas stoves once we’d already arrived.

I had emailed the campsite to enquire about buying logs onsite a couple of weeks prior to this and received no reply.

The toilets were a bit run down and there were only 3 unisex ones for the whole site, however the one shower (for the entire campsite) had black mould growing.

There was a smell of sewage (different to the manure smell, which we knew about in advance and had no issue with) around the loo block area.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback.

We're sorry that aspects of your stay didn't meet your expectations.

The temporary fire and charcoal BBQ ban was introduced due to the prolonged period of exceptionally dry weather and was in place for the safety of all guests, neighbouring land and the surrounding countryside. Our booking terms and conditions clearly state that fires and charcoal BBQs may be restricted during periods of prolonged dry weather or high winds. Following one of the driest spells in recent years, we considered these restrictions to be expected.

We're also sorry that your note regarding purchasing logs wasn't responded to. Booking notes are only reviewed on the morning of arrival, and as the fire restrictions were already in place, we mistakenly assumed the request was no longer relevant. We apologise for this oversight.

Our facilities are basic, and this is clearly reflected in both our campsite description and the photographs of the toilet block shown on our website and booking platforms, allowing guests to make an informed decision before booking. The toilet block consists of three unisex toilets and one shower, which are cleaned regularly throughout the day. We have inspected the shower following your comments and have addressed the issue you raised.

Regarding the smell around the facilities, being a working farm with a septic system, there can occasionally be temporary odours depending on weather conditions and usage. However, we will continue to monitor this to ensure everything is operating as it should.

We do, however, feel it is important to provide some additional context for other readers. During your stay we received multiple complaints from other guests regarding the behaviour and noise levels from your group. Staff had to speak to your group on several occasions about shouting, screaming and playing games close to other guests' pitches and parked vehicles. You were also reminded more than once to observe our quiet hours from 11:00 pm, as the noise was disturbing other campers.

Our designated group area exists specifically to minimise disruption to couples and solo campers who have chosen our adults-only campsite for a peaceful break. Unfortunately, despite being made aware of this, the behaviour continued throughout the evening. Had the disturbances continued after the final warning, your group would have been asked to leave in accordance with our site rules.

Our campsite is exclusively for adults aged 21 and over because we aim to provide a relaxed, respectful environment where all guests can enjoy their stay. We ask every guest, regardless of the size of their group, to treat the site, our staff and fellow campers with courtesy and respect.

We appreciate all feedback, but we also believe it is important that reviews reflect the experience of everyone staying on site.

Electric forest floor tent pitch (woodland)

Liked - child free! ( our first time away without our children, result!)
- beautiful location, nice to be in the woodland and be able to have Eletric!
- Yes toilets and showers were basic but completely usable and I can be a princess! Better than peeing in a bush and washing with a wet wipe. This is also throughly the explained and reflects the price so ignore other comments :)

Disliked Nothing. Was just what we needed!

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked The forest camping forest area was perfect , pick your own spot anywhere behind the line. Separate group areas are in a different section so you don't get a lot of noise from them. (We stayed when England played and a group of 7 tents went out to watch but we didn't hear them come back late)
Kylie greeted us when we arrived and talk us theough where to camp and park the car. Very friendly from the beginning.
We had booked to bring our dog but with the hot weather we left her at home and where gutted that we die! Lots of shaded area in the forest. Next time we will bring her along!

Disliked Nothing, everything was fine. We have been camping many times and seen a lot worse.
Unfortunately the shower stopped draining the morning we were leaving but was working again within 20 minutes, Kylie was straight on the case getting it fixed.

Liked Pitch, large pond, trees, level of noise, Toilets, water availability and the hosts

Disliked Nothing. It is a simple Camping site, so not for those that like luxury. But for those who like proper camping, it is a great spot.

Liked Nice working farm site with quite pitches.

Disliked Facilities are very tired but usable. They are in need of a thorough deep clean. I am not a fan of this type of unisex facilities.

Local attractions

Bring your boots along, for there’s much rural rambling to be done in the New Forest National Park around a 10-minute drive from Meadow Tree Farm. Bike trails run through the forest too, and you can saddle up to see the wildlife from horseback at a riding centre a few minutes’ drive from the site. Other open-air activities nearby include teeing off at one of the golf courses within a 15-minute drive or swinging through the trees at the Go Ape park half an hour away. Sailing lessons and boat trips can be had from Southampton or Lymington, both within a 45-minute drive. For history-infused days out, head to Salisbury or pay a visit to Romsey Abbey, Breamore House or the vintage car collection at Beaulieu, all of which are within a half an hour’s drive. For animal antics, Marwell Zoo is also about half an hour away.
