Kings Acre Glamping: Our log cabin and decking next to our small lake

General

  • Peaceful family-run smallholding
  • A 10-minute drive from Chester and within 40 of north Wales beaches
  • Barbecues allowed; firepits and professional pizza oven to hire

You shouldn't be too surprised to hear that there's handsome countryside surrounding the quiet rural site of Kings Acre Glamping. And how spacious it is too: the green lands around the site run to 20 acres.

You can venture regally around two kingdoms from here, as Kings Acre is deep in Cheshire countryside for English days aplenty, and within 40 minutes' drive of both splendid Snowdonia and the beaches of the north Wales coast. The ancient city of Chester is a three and a half miles away for shopping and sightseeing, or you could stick to non-urban days and make your way north to the beaches, comely villages and famed golf courses of the Wirral peninsula.

Kings Acre is a peaceful and spacious park on a family-run smallholding, serenely set down a private lane in the village of Saughall. It's in a walkers' paradise with plenty of nearby footpaths – or you might prefer to seek out the site's small lake and see if the little bar is open…?

Amenities include a separate shared toilet and shower block; the site also allows barbecues and has firepits for hire (with wood available to buy) to keep evenings nice and toasty. Something a bit more ambitious? There's also a professional pizza oven to hire.

    Disliked:

Campsite was very hard to find using bike GPS app so switched to Google maps which gave the same erroneous directions, the problem area is on the corner of Saughall Rd/Saxon Way, seems to believe there is a route through the cornfield. All other routes had very muddy and damaged roads which were difficult to traverse on bike.

Quiet site close to Chester Zoo and city with clean toilets, showers, kitchen area with fridge and kettle, and friendly staff! Added bonus was the use of the marquee and indoor space when weather was poor as well as fish pond and jetty to sit at on warm evenings and horses in next field.

    Disliked:

Access road full of potholes! Passable with care!

Everything, there was a really lovely ethos and atmosphere. The hosts were helpful, we weren’t too lucky with the weather so we spend a lot of time in the event space which we were really grateful for. Facilities were well maintained. We walked into the village for lunch one day which was less than 30 mins. There is no WiFi (which I think is great!) but there is good phone signal if like us you have preteens. I would recommend hiring the pizza oven! We also used the communal fire pit. The scenery was beautiful and we had a great time. We will definitely go back!

Directions

When you turn onto Kingswood Lane, satnav will only take you to the end of a row of houses on the left. Please continue round the corner to the right where the road turns from tarmac to bumpy farm track. This track then bends to the left; Kings Acre is the first residence on the right. Please continue past the first private residential entrance to the site entrance, between two high yellow walls. This will bring you into the car park. Please drive slowly.

Local attractions

Take your pick from England or Wales, River Dee or Snowdonia fishing, and beaches and seaside villages on both sides of the border. Golfers should most cetsinly bring along their clubs too, as the nearby Wirral peninsula is home to Hoylake Municipal Golf Club, a previous venue for The Open.

The famed and fab Roman city of Chester is within 20 minutes' drive, for shops, bars and restaurants if your tastes tend towards the more modern, and the city walls (the most complete in Britain), cathedral, Chester Castle and Grosvenor Museum for more anciently-themed pursuits. Meets and events are at Chester Racecourse, also within 10 minutes, and family days can/should be had at Chester Zoo, the UK's most visited with over 21,000 critters to see.

Heading north to the Wirral, clamber up the sand dunes at the North Wirral Coastal Park 25 minutes' drive away, to have a spot of birdwatching at Red Rocks beach (40 minutes), followed by the spectacularly scenic walk from Red Rocks to West Kirby. Another top Wirral attraction is the village of Port Sunlight, built for local workers in the 19th century: potter around the arts and crafts cottages, museum and art gallery, or take a heritage tour.

Must see

  • Chester Zoo (4.3 kilometres)
  • Chester Cathedral (4.3 kilometres)
  • Chester Castle (4.8 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Speke Hall, Garden and Estate (13.8 kilometres)
  • Mr Hardman's Photographic Studio (20.2 kilometres)
