  • Spectacular views in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • A five-min drive from Derwent Reservoir; 30 from Durham and Newcastle
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed; pub and restaurant right next door
No need to go far to conjure up magical views from Northumberland’s Bolbec Manor Campsite: it overlooks Muggleswick Moor and is on the north-eastern edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a wildlife and walking haven making up the second biggest AONB in the country. As you’d expect, outdoor adventuring is all around here, from moorland hikes over the North Pennines and further west around the Yorkshire Dales National Park, to roaming the paths of Muggleswick woods to the south. The Derwent Reservoir, one of England’s biggest inland waterways, is five minutes’ drive away for sailing, windsurfing and lakeside cycling; fishing and golf are close by, and city days are easily sorted at Durham and Newcastle, each 30 minutes’ drive away. Bolbec Manor has toilets, shower facilities, a washing-up area and chemical disposal. Barbecues and campfires are allowed; the nearest shops are at Shotley Bridge five minutes’ drive away and Consett within 10. As a peaceful site, no loud music is allowed (the soundtrack here will be provided by the hens that scratch about on site). Please note that tents staying for three nights or more should be relocated after the third night.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Friendly owner snd beautiful views. Nice pitches and the pun next door had delicious food and a very lovely lady serving.

Disliked: The showers were cold and the toilet had no toilet paper. It doesn’t seem quite finished and is a building site.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass tent or motorhome pitch (large)

Liked: I loved the Fenced off pitches and they were staggered meaning everyone could see the view. The pitches were very roomy and it’s about a mile walk to reservoir with great walks. Dog friendly. It is an exposed location and sadly my second day was very windy and rainy so I left a day early but I’d already been for a long walk and was ready for a hot bath. Would highly recommend.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass tent or motorhome pitch (large)

Liked: We chose this site as it was close to an running event we were attending and we needed a base. The owners were friendly and gave us a choice of pitch. The toilets whilst basic, were very clean and each had a sink, mirror and hooks for your towel in the cubicle. The washing up station was handy and washing up liquid and soap was provided. The pub next door was useful as they serve food in the afternoon and evening.

Disliked: The site is extremely exposed as it sits on the side of a hill running up from Derwent reservoir. Whilst the views are lovely, if it is windy, which I suspect is most of the time if the bent over trees are anything to go by, there is no shelter and you will feel the full force of the wind (it was gusting 45mph this weekend). If you are in a van or camper that’s probably not an issue, we were lucky we were in a tough little bivvy, a larger/taller or more flimsy carbon fibre tent would’ve been a problem. Just something to bear in mind when you are choosing your site. The toilet/shower building looked new from the outside but was very basic and unfinished on the inside. There are two showers but the water pressure for the warm water was so low only one was useable, if someone was already in one, the other didn’t work. For £25 a night with facilities, I suppose I did expect the showers to work. This site is on the A68 so there is some traffic noise as lorries run along there through the night. Again, if you are in a van you probably wouldn’t hear it. If you are looking for a nice relaxing site where you want to enjoy views and peace and quiet, and you are in a tent, unfortunately I would recommend you look somewhere else. Oh, and there no signage on the main road so when you see the Manor House Inn, turn there!

Local attractions

An easy – and recommended – first stopoff is Derwent Reservoir, in a handsome setting a few miles from Bolbec Manor. Take a hike (or stroll) on the well-maintained paths to Pow Hill Country Park on the south shore or Millshield picnic area on the north, or take the longer bike route around the reservoir covering some local roads as well. Drop into the visitor centre for info, the key to the bird hide on Derwent’s western edge, or a fishing permit: Derwent is a popular pick for Co Durham trout fishing. Around the North Pennines AONB, it’s well worth the 45-minute drive to Ninebanks near Hexham to access Isaac’s Tea Trail, a circular 37-mile route from there to Alston via Allendale and Nenthead. The same distance to the south and also well worth the drive is the famed waterfall of High Force, where the entire River Tees plunges 21 feet over a cliff; get to the waterfall via the Pennine Way stretch crossing the Moor House Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve. Also to the south, the market town of Bishop Auckland is home to Auckland Castle and its 800 acres of parkland, and to Binchester Roman Fort (this is Hadrian’s Wall land), a Roman fortress on the banks of the River Wear. Somewhat more modern history is at Durham and its must-see stunning cathedral.
